Maybe the leadership in North Korea thought it was great sport and high international drama that would bring them more food, fuel and maybe even weapons, but their recent shelling of innocent civilians and their sinking of a South Korean warship operating under in South Korean waters has but the Republic of Korea (South Korea) to the brink of war. “South Korea will abandon its long-standing policy of not responding militarily to the North’s hostile acts”, President Lee Myung-bak said, following the artillery bombardment of a South Korean island last week that killed four people, two of them civilians.
“In the past, North Korea has provoked us on many occasions, but this is the first time they have made a direct attack on South Korean soil,” said Lee, making his first public remarks since the Nov. 23 attack on civilian-inhabited Yeonpyeong island heightened fears of an all-out conflict. “Launching a military attack on civilians is a crime against humanity, even during wartime.
Now, Lee said, “South Koreans realize that tolerance and generosity bring more provocation.” He said that South Korea would strengthen its military capability and would “make North Korea pay the due price by all means for its provocation from now on.”
Baek Seung-joo, a researcher at the Korea Institute for Defense Analysis, called the speech “a turning point for South Korean government policy dealing with North Korea…With the nation’s support, Lee will make sure any further provocation is met with military action.”
If I were Taiwan I'd be worried. I think China is going to say "Dear World, we'll deal with the NorKs but you have to look the other way when we snatch Taiwan."
The So Koreans had better get their own weapons. With Obama at the help of the USA, they would perhaps find better allies amongst their enemies.
Obama loves switching things around and creating chaos with our friends.
Innominatus and Opus #6 – the world waits…
I'm so glad we have effective leadership at the helm.
I truly believe China will not disrupt the status quo with regards to Taiwan (should the status quo remain the status quo, but that's what a status quo is, right?)
As for South Korea, the same. The status quo of stern warnings, and verbal disapproval will prevail…inspired by 'stern' disaproval from Washington. Oh, and then more money and food for NK…
If China stops selling to WalMart, their economy will be in big trouble. Why would they start trouble with us and kill the cash cow?
Given it is the smallest dog who barks the loudest and longest, this may just be the time N Korea gets its curtain pulled back. Man, that would be fantastic.
Call their bluff S Korea. Call it. Just like R Reagan did with Russia.
