
Other bodies in the solar system don’t have the protective measures that Earth enjoys and when robotic space craft visit (and later humans riding in the can), can be negatively influenced by conditions that are unfamiliar, and are not compensated for (presuming that compensation is possible.

Listening to electro-magnetic waves around the Earth, converted to sound, are said to be almost like listening to singing and chirping birds at dawn with a crackling camp fire nearby. This is why such waves are called “chorus waves”. They cause polar lights but also high-energy ‘killer’ electrons that can damage spacecraft.

Ganymede is both Jupiter’s largest moon
and the largest moon in the solar system.
The scientists led by Yuri Shprits of GFZ and the University of Potsdam report that the power of chorus waves is a million times more intense near the Jovian moon Ganymede, and 100 times more intense near the moon Europa than the average around these planets. These are the new results from a systematic study on Jupiter’s wave environment taken from the Galileo Probe spacecraft.
“It’s a really surprising and puzzling observation showing that a moon with a magnetic field can create such a tremendous intensification in the power of waves,” says the lead author of the study Professor Yuri Shprits of GFZ/ University of Potsdam and who is also affiliated with UCLA.
Chorus waves are a special type of radio wave occurring at very low frequencies.
Unlike the Earth, Ganymede and Europa orbit inside the giant magnetic field of Jupiter and the authors believe this is one of the key factors powering the waves. Jupiter’s magnetic field is the largest in the solar system, and some 20,000 times stronger than the Earth’s.
“Chorus waves have been detected in space around the Earth but they are nowhere near as strong as the waves at Jupiter” says Professor Richard Horne of British Antarctic Survey who is a co-author on the study. “Even if small portion of these waves escapes the immediate vicinity of Ganymede, they will be capable of accelerating particles to very high energies and ultimately producing very fast electrons inside Jupiter’s magnetic field.”
At the Earth, chorus waves play a major role in producing high-energy ‘killer’ electrons that can damage spacecraft. The new observations raise the question as to whether they can do the same at Jupiter.

As I read your descroption of the shielding we enjoy, I am once more reminded that it's almost as if Earth was designed to be lived on.
Our marines have armored choppers, our grunts have Abrahams M1 tanks, our squids have air craft carriers, our air force has F-18 jets, what does our Space Force have? Tang and gummy bears?
Very interesting article! On one hand, it makes it sound like travel to Jupiter is a good place for manned spacecraft to avoid. OTOH, it sure is good to keep sending unmanned probes to learn the environment as completely as we can.

Shortwave listeners call this the "Dawn Chorus", and I've heard it a few times, along with "Whistlers" and other natural radio phenomena. They're not very predictable, so it's one of those "Right Place, Right Time" things, similar to the "Green Flash" seen at sea when the sun sets.
Jupiter can be "heard" almost anytime it's above your local horizon.
If we were back in the 50's/60's, there'd be a museum exhibit called something like "The Earth's Magnetic Field – Our Friend and Protector!" explaining just how lucky we are to live on a planet with a (mostly…) stable magnetic field.
One more 'feature' that we didn't know about… It's enough to make one 'wonder' what ELSE is sitting out there waiting to bite us in the butt when we actually send humans into deep space.
When I drank it – and when it was the thing to drink, I used to mix about 5X the amount of dry orange mix than was called for and it was pretty good.
It will be a LONG time before we are able to shield manned space flights from either Jupiter or Saturn. The trip in open space to Mars will be a serious challenge because of waves (including 'negative waves').
Yes, that's the point, really. It's not what you know and can prepare for so much as it is the unexpected…and you're a LONG way from help.
