Suggestion #1. Tax withholding keeps us disconnected from the our tax code. Most of us don’t really feel any pain when we pay taxes because we were never in possession of the money. It’s taken directly from our checks.
If you really want to change government…I mean REALLY want to change…get rid of income tax withholding so we all have to actually WRITE A CHECK to pay our taxes. Then make tax day, the day before election day.
Suggestion #2. A proposed 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, to wit: “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives.”
Suggestion #3. As a lesson in humility, require ALL (yes ALL) civil servants in America to pick up trash for one day (eight hours) per year on the roadside. The President and his protection detail are not exempt. They close freeways for the president’s motorcade all the time. They could inconvenience everyone while he/she picks up trash too. (that would be one day spend in lieu of golfing)
Suggestion #4. Require Presidential Press Secretaries to go on a voice stress analyzer (lie detector) every time they hold a press conference. It would either eliminate press conferences or make them a whole lot more interesting.
Suggestion #5. As a lesson for why it’s important to be able to defend yourself, eliminate firearms from all protection details for government executives. (see suggestion #2 above). Maybe the every-day man needs to have the protection of a firearm every bit as much as a cabinet member or the president. Allow Vice President Joe Biden to keep a shotgun to shoot in the air.
No 2 would make all the others redundant.
Yes, it would. Which is why the political establishment is unlikely to take it seriously.

#1 is SERIOUSLY a great idea. Test it out – ask a friend how much they "paid" in federal income tax last year. 9 times out of 10 you will get, "I got X amount back," or "I only ended up owing a little." They have no idea.
