One of those sad statistics is that 5 out of the 523 Australians killed come from where I live in rural Queensland.
Our population is currently under 5000 and in 1975 it was about 2100. The loss of that many people from a small town would have been devastating to the community.
I imagine there are many similar towns in rural USA.

If AFVs were actually useful for swamp hunting, you’d suddenly see a whole bunch of very practical amphib AFVs.
Amphibious armor has had a spotty history.
The Amtracks did yeoman service in the Pacific. An armored LVT with a M-8 GMC turret with a 75mm pack howitzer, and then two shielded .30cal or .50cal on the sides.
Worked very well in the later Saipan and Okinawa campaigns.
Other armored amphibious fighting vehicles always suffered from equipment or mission creep that added so much onto them that it took the amphib ability away.
The WW2 Amtracks wouldn’t be suitable for the CBR environments of the modern battlefield. You’re correct, they keep piling equipment onto them and it detracts from an expeditionary/amphibious mission.
