The stock market reaction to IBM’s earnings warning is not really surprising, though I do wonder which senior leaders will be held accountable when $69 billion in market value is lost in a single day. While hardware is an expensive business, it does offer additional types of moats compared to software. I do wonder if the company regrets selling its chip manufacturing business back in 2015, before the current AI wave. IBM really has to figure out what kind of company it wants to be and invest accordingly; its leadership likes to market IBM as a growth company even though it performs like a mature blue-chip company.
I pulled a prank on the IBM people at their Irvine, California, office many years ago now (the statute of limitations has run). I got black-and-white spray paint, stencils, wrenches, and enlisted the aid of a confederate. We reordered the parking in their parking structure after some IBM people had been unnecessarily rude to me when I worked for the District Attorney. Some of the metal parking placards were moved, some were removed, and some had temporary names painted on the backstops. A few remained as they had been. None of the employees found it odd that I was parked in the back of their building, in a visitor space, on Tuesday morning after a long Labor Day weekend to watch the mayhem. The longer the stick up some people’s asses, the greater the panic.

Vance on Iran (& the larger Middle East)
Trump and Rubio never thought it possible to negotiate peace on our terms with Iran. Vance insisted we could, and Trump let him try, giving him his best shot. The result was a meaningless Memorandum of Understanding, which Iran immediately violated. While Vance was negotiating, however, Plan B was further developed — strategies to force Iran to do what we wanted — opening the Strait to shipping and foregoing nuclear capability forever.
The Vance negotiations allowed Trump more time to work with Iran’s neighbors to encourage them to join us and offer them protection from anticipated Iranian aggression while setting in motion steps to keep oil flowing to prevent a worldwide economic catastrophe. Vance willingly but naively believed in his mission. No one else in the Administration did, although they did nothing to undercut him. If he succeeded, it was good. If he failed — and he certainly did because the task was futile from the outset — he bore the brunt of it.
Now, because of his own naivete, he’s exposed as unfit to handle defense matters, which is, after all, the most important role of a chief executive. Will that carry forward to the next election, or can he change course? I’ve heard him on Rogan recently, and he seems to follow the Tucker Carlson line, which I believe to be a mistake on his part.

August is coming. A new LL book soon to drop. Meanwhile, I am reading a second time “Exiles from Eden” by Larry Lambert. For those who have not read it, it’s really a much more complicated story than just a motorcycle criminal club as it morphs into a totally different story. But, I can’t say here what story as it will ruin the readers surprise. If you like anything LL has written, you’ll like “Exiles from Eden”.

When I find a novel/book/short by a really top-notch author and would like to recommend it to my friends and others who might enjoy reading it, I don’t mind whoring (for?) (4th definition of the verb in Wiktionary) it.
And like any good whore, I don’t mind providing one or two good teasers (in this case, with the permission of the author).
Boron… ok… how about… you’ll encounter characters from other LL books who make a new appearance to further complicate the story. Plus the three letter agencies show up in force along with complicated international intrigue. I’m not real good at the teaser thing… without blowing up the plot twists.
Because Exiles from Eden is essentially a non-fiction story, names and some circumstances have been changed, and I have struggled with Part 2 of the story. It’s one of those on the list to be told.

Because of the formatting, it would require quite a bit of work for me, maybe a month, to recut the whole thing. At this point, it’s not cost-effective if I’m to blog and move forward with other books. Maybe I’d sell two or three paperback copies?

for market watchers like yours truly, IBM began a strong upward trend back at the end of ’23 onnly to be broken mid-February this year, after which it began jumping around from over 330 down to 200.
Prior to that that value of the stock (on the chart), IMHO, appeared to mirror, somewhat/more or less, the value of the U.S. dollar. I don’t know if it will continue to do so or if it’s been “infected” by any one of a number diseases that can cause these feverish leaps and declines in stocks/patients like these (DEI?).
Please remember! This is only my opinion as a result of my skewed vision; I am just a retired dentist with absolutely zero background in neither(both?) economics and finance.

I have had some interactions with IBM over the past few years, and they’ve leaned heavily into DEI. It means that they have useless eaters who replaced productive employees. IBM is a slow corporation anyway, where some of their competition is hungry and fast. It means that, particularly where A.I. is involved, they lag. They go through cycles where they ruthlessly cut out the non-productive portions, which is why they remain in business. They need to do what Musk did to Twitter if they want to survive and eliminate the DEI overhead burden. Again, IMHO.
Over the past several years, an amazing number of the large brokerages (and banks – and medical corporations including hospitals) have leaned heavily into DEI; it worries me greatly/severely/with due cause. Sorta an extension of The Peter Principle – promotion into a position that is well beyond one’s capabilities (and educational level) as a result of the color of one’s skin and/or (cultural?) background.
I look at myself in the mirror of my soul (only every so often, there is only so much self-abuse I can take) and worry that this. too, has become another means to change America (and its [capitalistic, in a good way] foundations)

Vance: Smart guy, inside player,…whatever he said on Rogan I take as ‘in the moment’, he’ll learn from any mistake. Read a deal about Denmark now banning burkas in the classroom whereas they prior banned them in public to increase pressure for self-deportation of those ‘refusing to become Danish’ and assimilate into their society after immigrating. And those two steps were taken after a tightening in 2018 of immigration ‘from certain countries’ who moved there to suck off the system. The Danes found the first step was not as helpful, now they are increasing pressure for the locust horde to self-deport under stricter rules that make it less hugge to maintain their enclaves and infest Danish society and traditions. It’s working. So will the morphed plan with Iran now that PDJT and Team have given them every opportunity to come to the table honorably…even though that leadership is not the least honorable, as was realized.
Denmark must realize (some do) that, to remain a nation, it must be able to credibly defend itself against larger neighbors. A smart Danish move would be to carve out a percentage of Greenland mineral leases that go back to the Old Country, allow the US to buy and develop as needed without a green agenda coming into play. That would offend the Green Danes, all of whom are socialists, but it would bring in revenue that could be earmarked for self-defense. It’s economically smarter to be a partner of the USA than to be an opponent. Yes, they also need to remove the human lice they’ve allowed in.
Thinking you should make that pitch directly to King Fredrick…makes total sense to bolster sovereignty.

Trump uses social media to disrupt and to misdirect what he is doing. The main stream news publishes undocumented, unnamed sources to give some punch to their stories which are typically anti-US. Bloggers use their personal likes and dislikes to sway their audiences.

Without more in-depth information, I am sitting back with my coffee enjoying the morning instead of getting upset one way or the other right now. The Middle East is an intriguing area that I prefer to avoid right now. If I were an adventurer, I would return to Oman’s Hajar Mountains to look for the deep wells with aqueducts carrying water from the mountains to Muscat. Or perhaps to find the missing British aircraft carrying a large Army payroll of silver dollars which crashed in Iraq’s Mesopotamian Marshes in the 1920s and was never located. Even if the silver is gone, the engine is still there.

Vance is smart, but I don’t think he quite realizes the depth of depravity the Iranian leaders will go to keep their power. He doesn’t have much longer to learn the demands of being a good President. That, and realizing meddling in the Middle East doesn’t have good results without either staying away, or being ready to turn much of it into rubble. The rubble part doesn’t need to wait for years to happen. So far, dilly-dallying only killed U.S. soldiers, introduced huge amounts of fraud, cost way too much money, led to U.S. arms in the wrong hands, and the politics not really changing.
