Known as the geodynamo, this is produced in Earth’s core. Heat moves from the inner core to the outer core, which generates circulating currents that twist into patterns under the influence of the planet’s rotation. This creates and maintains the magnetic field.
Previous research in which scientists simulated the Martian core suggested that the presence of lighter elements in Mars’ core could have played a significant role in killing its dynamo and magnetic field. Now we have detailed information on what’s actually in there so that scientists can reconstruct the history of Mars more accurately.

Looks to be in red Arctic colors as used by planes that flew in the Alaskan Air Command in the 1950s.
Yes, a C-82 with tracked landing gear. For a brief moment, the USAF and the big designers of the time felt that tracks were the future, but they didn’t work out as envisioned.
Single wheel landing gear was a thing. It was one of the concerns with the B-36 in needing huge tires, really huge tires. A tracked landing gear was also proposed for the B-36, which though it worked, weighed too much and took away range and bomb load.
The solution eventually came to be the modern multi-wheeled systems we have today. Basically untracked tracks. Kind of like if Walter Christie designed landing gear (his early tracked designs had tracks for low ground pressure and, remove the tracks, wheels to go fast on roads or on rails.)
I don’t feel sorry for Pedo Joe at all; he signed up for this gig. During fleetingly moments of clarity he displays his arrogance and disdain for the American population while daring us to challenge his credibility (“My word as a Biden”). No, it’s FJB from me.

Not an engineer and don’t play one on TV but tracks? I can see it help on ground taxi on airfields that are not fully plowed but landings must have been “fun”. The stress on the tracks as they got up to speed on landing must have been huge. Also, I would think they would be very heavy when compared to regular landing gear.
There were a number of aircraft fitted with tracks for warm climates on dry, hard, runways. I don’t know what they were thinking.
Briefly tried on the B-36 to replace one huge tire. The use of now conventional multi tire trucks was finally adopted.
The current system works – as you point out. There has been a lot of trial and error.
Oh, I’m sure that they’ll vote to print another couple of trillion before the deadline. I just bid on a job quoting insane money, but it’s worth less and costs keep going up. I gave the client 72 hours to take it or leave it. They really don’t have anywhere else to go – but I’m not being a jerk. If they wait a month to say yes, the job is sure to cost 10% more at my end – because the subs will want more.

I have the black rubber pachmayr grips on my S&W 65-2. I got it as a police trade in about 20 years ago. It looked a bit rough but I polished out all of the scratches and put a new grip on it. It had no wear on the cone, barrel, and any of the internal parts. My favorite load is a hot +P 38 special coated 147gr SWC at 1100 fps.
The EC-82A was followed by the C-119, some of which are STILL flying today! And yes, nobody over there likes Wagner Group.
C-119s are flying in Africa and Asia on cargo routes. Maybe South America too. It speaks to a robust aircraft. The C-123s are as well.
Not bad, until you realize there are still DC-3s and C-46s flying commercial cargo.
And I think the last Fokker tri-motor was finally taken out of commercial service sometime during the Covidiocracy.
