In the fire service, multiple simultaneous fires at different locations is one sure sign of arson. A rare instance where that can happen is along a raliroad track, caused by a melting wheel bearing spewing molten metal mile after mile. Power lines can do much the same thing.
Saw that very thing happen back during my high school years. A Great Northern train as south bound coming out of the Tulelake CA basin one summer. As soon as they hit the dry sage brush and grass, poof! Fortunately they crew spotted it and the train stopped.
We had several fires between here and Cheyenne last year that were caused by a “Hot Box” on freight cars. Lots of RR traffic here.
