   British vehicle choice-
   Why re-invent the wheel. Buy the Dingo version for front line and the Unimog truck for general use.
   I got my Australian army truck licence on the 1980’s version of the Unimog. Solid vehicle you could take anywhere there was a track or road. 20” ground clearance helped a lot. 450 pound steel, bull bar (local extra) made traffic fender benders easy, just touch up the paint.

   2. You can always go back to the tried and true M113 chassis. Ubiquitous throughout the world, the running gear works. The basic vehicle can be upengined to 400BHP. The chassis can be extended by 1 set of bogies (the MVTL variant) or by reduction of 1 set of bogies (making a short recon version) or by lowering the height of the vehicle (M113 1/2 as used by the Canadians and Belgians) or uparmored with applique armor, or by adding removable front and rear floats making for a cheap version of the LVTP 7 (as done by the Italians.) There have been, pretty much from Day 1 of the M113’s storied career, versions made into IFVs, with manned turrets or remote weapon stations, versions modified with a non-straight-walled box chassis (kind of like what the Bradley has.) Versions made into command vehicles, medic evac vehicles, astronaut rescue vehicles (NASA still has a couple around for that,) made into missile launch vehicles (from small anti-tank missiles to weather sounding rockets to full ‘short range’ nuclear weapon-capable missiles and everything in between.)

      Frig, BAE owns the M113 platform. How friggin difficult would it be to make it work in the modern world? Suspensions are suspensions. Upgrade the armor, put all the funky little electric and electronic boxes that are now new and great, give it a weapon system that works and is easy to use.

      How hard is this to do? (Looking at our DOD and how many families of ground combat vehicles have we specced out and almost implemented and almost bought but then tossed aside?)

      1. Building a military land vehicle, and particularly one that is armored and armed seems to be a the pervue of successive committees and decades. I agree with the Lord High Executioner in that starting with running gear that works and a basic engine that provides the horsepower needed should be an easy place to start. Beltway Bandits always want to start from scratch because it’s more lucrative but it adds years to R&D.

Drug Boat Interdiction – I’ve seen the Crypto weenies have the ship go into specified waters and broadcast , usually in a sexy woman’s voice , calls to known ships and Capts saying they were a radio relay station with an urgent message for them . I suppose hoping they would answer up and give away their position . They would change up the messages and the voices after a bit . We would usually do it for about 6 hours or so and then get back on track to whatever it was we were doing or going . I’ve seen it done in several languages in several places , we never got an answer…. it was damn annoying on a bridge watch where they played the repeated broadcasts over and over . — Deceptive lighting , rigged up with coffee cans portable lights etc . to make the ship look shorter , not as tall , done that too , against all rules of navigation , I’ll save that for another post .

   P.S. on drugs. No consumer, no market. We know the root of the problem. Any good solutions? I still have my vices. Not porn, not illegals or even the Oregon state flower. Pain management is something i deal with periodically. Bests helps have been CBT and physical therapy. Only using meds as as last and temporary resort. In my teen rebel years the drug abuse and dealing started out as an adventure but became my religion. ( never addicted to hard drugs)

      1. The benefit of Ozempic as opposed to simply using diet/carb intake or glucophages is that it almost locks your blood sugar in at the “ideal” range of between 90 and 100 if injected weekly and is accompanied by some degree of moderation. For diabetics, it’s a miracle drug.

         1. When taking Ozempic in particular, because it is very effective in controlling blood sugar, you must eat (caloric uptake) or you will go hypoglycemic and will “crash” which can be life threatening.

            1. I know several people on ozempic type drugs , yes they are losing weight , but they look gaunt and unhealthy , many were not morbidly obese to begin with , I’ve heard it is expensive . I dunno ….. it is mostly women in my circle of acquaintances .

            Not a (pharmacological/medical) Luddite, but side effects (immediate and long-range) and other possible changes in bodily functions and chemistry should be thoroughly understood by any patient taking this particular medication (or WEGOVY/semaglutide), whether under physician’s guidance or self-administered.

            1. I suspect that it’s too new for even the most skilled researchers to grasp the longer-term effects fully. The “Hollywood dosages” are very high. Sometimes, a complete picture of side effects takes many decades to manifest.

         3. Prior to GLP-1 derived medications, Gila Monster venom was the precursor of Byetta and Bydureon back in the late ’90s. Ex-wife was on Byetta for years, so was my Mom. Both were taken off, some of the side effects weren’t as pleasant. Weight loss was a boon, but the stomach pain and nausea didn’t help.
            Both ex-wife and I had bariatric surgery (different surgeries and different times). She was extremely diabetic, and immediately post-op and thereafter, diabetes went away! I was only pre-diabetic but the surgery alleviated me of that, elevated blood pressure, and following the weight loss, sleep apnea.

            1. I have a daughter who takes it, Boats, and I don’t think she needs to lose weight, but she does. It’s $20/month with a prescription. $1,000 a month if you buy it without a health plan to bargain down the price.

    Geology – More opinions than “climate change”. In the case of the Yellowstone caldera, some evidence shows the magma concentration (if that is a proper term) has migrated to under Casper, WY. Some geologists say Colorado’s 14,000 ft mountains shouldn’t exist.

    In my youth I wanted to attend Colorado School of Mines but lacked the smarts.

    1. Not exactly. The North American plate is moving over a hotspot that heats the craton (the hard rock plate we live on), which “floats” on magma. The high silaca concentration creates a “caldera” which is not a volcano in the sense of a stratovolcano (Mt. St. Helens or Vesuvius) or a shield volcano (Hawaiian Islands). The particular magma produced under the hotspot grows under pressure until it explodes (supervolcano). Erruptions of supervolcanoes are very rare. As the tectonic plate moves over the hotspot, the magma chamber cools, forming a pluton (a magma chamber that never errupted) – formation of “granite”. Over geologic time periods SOMETIMES those cooled magma masses are pushed up through the crust (Rocky Mountains) and we see them like Half Dome in Yosemite, or in the Wasatch Front in Utah or north of there in Idaho or the Grand Tetons in Wyoming.

       1. The Earth’s crust under the sea is thinner than the plates we think of as dry land. You tend to see shield volcanoes like the eruptions in Iceland (Mid-Atlantic spreading ridge), in which the magma is very fluidic – lower concentration of silica. Where the plate is thicker – along the coastal regions where plates are subducting, for example, you have slightly thicker plate through which the magma passes, and the tendency is for stratovolcanoes to form (more silaca in the crust). Greenland is particularly interesting because of the BLEND of volcanic types where the plates merge – worth studying. I think that Boron’s daughter is there studying them. There is a lot that we don’t know.

          1. My geological specialty is paleomagnetism, and it occurs with the formation of those plutons that don’t erupt (it forms with all volcanism, but is more telling with those). The accretion of a craton (land mass) takes place over geologic time based on the movement of tectonic plates. The movement of those plates subducts carbon and helps to manage the carbon cycle without any human intervention.

             7. I agree with Paul M @ 2:24 PM, this was a professional hit. I unfortunately believe the assassin will never be caught. But, maybe some good guys in our Intelligence agencies will find something and catch the POS and the people that funded him. On the other hand, it may have been someone from an unacknowledged part of our own government doing the Deep State dirty work as Charlie had some probability to be a future U.S. President.

                I admired Charlie Kirk. I often listened to him on AM radio. I am sad at his death but believe he is in Paradise. I am so angry that I would like to see every Democrat drop dead (including some family).
