Last night we (me and two classmates from dental school) had our weekly dinner meeting at one of the (very) large establishments that purports to cook and serve Italian food, not a buffet. The men are all 85+ and our ladies (to whom we’ve been married well over 50+ years) a reasonably discreet distance below us.
As I looked around at the people standing, waiting to be seated, over 60% of them (all quite a bit younger) had guts hanging over their belts and/or looked like blow-up toys: their children and grandchildren as well.
They appear to be eating more than 15 meals a day, including snacks; it’s no wonder our medical facilities are so beset with the problems relating to obesity.
Humans and hobbits do not have the same metabolic requirements.
Basically you should eat all day, small meals of course…or Doritos as a filler-in snack…or ice cream.
My old dad always said that work was good for me and I was good for it. He grew up on a sheep ranch and alfalfa farm east of Soda Springs, ID. My grandma had breakfast on the table for the family and the working hands ~30 minutes before sunup. The hands came to the table after making sure their horses had a bit of oat mash. Lunch was in their saddle bags and probably bread, cheese, and maybe some fruit when they had it. Dinner was on the table about sundown when everyone got back to the farmhouse and the horses had been unsaddled, combed, and cared for prior to feeding them. My dad was happy when they sold the place in Idaho and moved to Salt Lake City and bought a couple of apartment buildings in the early 30s. Still work to do, but he missed the horses. By 1940, his parents were tired of his shenanigans and sent him to NMMI in Roswell, NM for high school. NMMI was a cavalry school and he got to take care of horses, I believe substantially on account of him working off his demerits. The reason we are all out of shape and fat is because we don’t work as hard as folks used to, and our diet is way worse than what my grandma used to cook. At least, that’s my theory, which is likely wrong.

Back in the day when I managed a small gun store/indoor range, a customer came in with an o/u derringer of some sort, chambered in something like 357 mag or 45 Colt. His intent was to qualify with it for concealed carry. After a few rounds, he came off the range, gun hand bleeding. A few days later, he returned. During my last colonoscopy, I was wheeled into the room with the anesthetic not quite in full effect and got a look at the “apparatus.” It looked like a double C-cell flashlight attached to the end of a heavy-duty garden hose and I was duly impressed enough to say, wait just a damn minute here. Doc looks around and said, you weren’t supposed to see that, and told the anesthetist to pile on a bit more meds. So, Paul, how about something like that, except upsized three or four notches and no anesthetic, either.
