Cracking the Hatches
I’ve only been supercargo on a submarine, so I’m not trying to culturally appropriate language – but I do use the term when I want to speak frankly with a friend. I don’t think that I use the term on the blog, but I did recently with somebody who follows the blog and was asked to explain it.
For months underwater, a submarine’s survival depends on being a perfectly sealed metal tube. But the second it docks, that airtight seal becomes a foul, pressurized liability.
While crews do not open literally every hatch—weapons-loading hatches stay sealed unless armaments are being moved—the primary access hatches are thrown open the moment the boat is securely moored.
The most immediate reason is ventilation. By the end of a patrol, the recycled atmosphere inside is saturated with the infamous “sub smell”—a pungent cocktail of diesel fuel, hydraulic oil, unwashed bodies, and amine, the chemical used in the ship’s carbon dioxide scrubbers. Opening hatches at opposite ends of the hull allows the crew to rig for surface ventilation, creating a wind tunnel effect that purges the stale air.
Even before ventilation begins, cracking a hatch is necessary to equalize atmospheric pressure. Inside a submerged sub, pressure fluctuates due to bleeding compressed air banks, running pneumatic equipment, and generating oxygen. When the submarine surfaces, the internal pressure rarely matches the outside atmosphere perfectly. The first hatch opened after surfacing often results in a rush of air as the pressure equalizes.
Beyond air quality, open hatches serve as the submarine’s umbilical cord to the outside world. When a nuclear submarine shuts down its reactor in port to reduce wear on the plant, the boat transitions to shore power. Thick electrical cables, cooling water hoses, and communication lines are routed from the pier directly down through the open hatches. These trunks simultaneously act as the only gangways for loading food, spare parts, and moving 130 sailors on and off the boat.
Naval regulations also dictate strict safety protocols while moored. If a fire breaks out or a flooding casualty occurs in port, having the entire crew bottlenecked at a single exit would be catastrophic. Opening multiple hatches ensures that no matter where an emergency happens inside the tight confines of the hull, the crew has a fast, reliable route to safety.
It’s another way of saying that something needs to be clarified. I hope that’s sufficient.

According to Army reporting, the brigade’s last Abrams has already departed Fort Carson, marking a symbolic end to its heavy-armor era. The unit will continue training and equipment familiarization as it prepares for full Stryker operations, while personnel and vehicle changes are being adjusted to match the new force structure. The 4th Infantry Division is also expected to become the Army’s only pure Stryker Infantry Division, strengthening its role in the Pacific and reflecting how the service is reshaping combat formations for modern battlefield demands. Airports as you said and for something different about 20 to 15 years ago as a side part of my business I used to install and service ATMs for a couple of banks. It was amazing the number of people who wanted to look inside or ask for “free” money.
For active machines I had a security guard. For new installs alone but some people would not believe that there was no money.
Did a couple of upgrades on some last year. Very similar resultss.
Mail all free money to the White Wolf Mine. You’ll receive biodiversity credits in return, which might make you feel good about your donation.

I don’t know if there are Walmarts down under. It’s been a long time since I visited. I also like watching people at Walmart, and in years past, I super-glued quarters and Kennedy half dollars to the floor to watch people try and pry them up. I don’t bother anymore/don’t care, but it’s still the sort of place where I watch people. I like to watch people on trains in Europe too, because I’m watching them watch me.

Not all Jewish people observe their faith in the same way. There is a vast gulf. One person who worked for me a long time ago was a blatant lesbian (she had a long backstory) who converted to Judaism. Her rabbi was a lesbian, and most of the congregation was homosexual (so much for the rule to multiply and replenish the Earth). She was also a democrat – of course. We got along because, above all, I knew the backstory. Many Jews would not consider her authentic because she had no hereditary connection. Her family was Catholic, and her dad (who I had met) walked around gun shows carrying a Confederate Battle Flag.
P. S. – The lesbian Jew was also pro-Palestinian. That’s like a sheep being pro-butcher. I did point out to her that if she traveled to an Islamic country, the very people she favored would have to decide whether to kill her for being a Jew or for being homosexual, and that being a woman there, she was also chattel.

Larry. You ask why so many American Jews vote Democrat and favour communism. This favouring left-wing parties and communism would appear to be a trend in Western Democracies (and yes, I understand that the United States is a Constitutional Republic not a Democracy), including Australia. Most Australian Jews vote for the left-wing Labor Party which varies across its political spectrum with its right-wing favouring socialism to its far left-wing which openly espouses Marxism. Still others vote for the extreme far-left Greens, who are openly Marxist and who, if possible go even further left beyond that. Very few vote for the conservative parties, the Liberals and the Nationals (these two form a Coalition in Parliament).
Have Communists been elected to parliament in Australia. Yes, but not openly on the ballot paper, they always run under the guise of being members of the Labor Party. One prime minister, in the early 1970s was a closet communist. He never came out and openly admitted it but his rhetoric and manifesto were straight out of the communist playbook. His deputy, when he left parliament, admitted he (the deputy) was a communist as have several others following their leaving parliament (either being voted out or retiring). Gillard, another Labor prime minister, was a member of the Socialist Alliance but, obviously knowing she would never get elected on this ticket, ran as a member of the Labor Party.
Currently, unfortunately, we have members of parliament who openly espouse support for Islamist states and Islamist terrorists. We also have the current Labor government, if you can call it a government, which openly favours the muslims, to the detriment of Australia’s national security and the safety of its law abiding citizens, importing hundreds of thousands of unvetted muslims solely, it would appear, to bolster their voter base. Unlike the United States our electoral system makes it almost impossible to rig an election. Note I say almost here, as nothing should be deemed impossible in the realm of politics

When my Dad switched parties (his allegiance) to vote for Ike, I asked him 1. why. 2. how come he was a Democrat in the first place (knowing his views to be highly Conservative).
He told me a long story: that when he first arrived in ’29 and was looking for the basics, his eldest brother referred him to the local Democrat “committee/group” which took care of everything: housing, job, best stores to purchase clothing, inexpensive kosher food, an orthodox shuul, etc. He felt he owed them a great deal.
His political views, however, didn’t make him very popular; he learned to keep quiet and attempted to find association with people who thought like he did.
At first they wanted nothing to do with with someone who wore a yarmulke 24/7 and their meetings, for the most part, were associated with the Protestant churches. (Please don’t laugh, but Grandpa had been born Lutheran, become Catholic, and then became a religious Hungarian Jew – 1st and 2nd marriage). He couldn’t eat the food provided; he wasn’t made to feel comfortable. He wasn’t able to associate, join.
Though a Conservative Republican, he voted Democrat – again, because he felt he owed them for what they did, how they helped a young man integrate into his new home.
I was brought up, however, listening to my father’s points of view – politicially very conservative: he despised the majority of Roosevelt’s legislation and thought the man was led by the Russian Communists from the very beginning.
The Democrats made certain, in the ’30s, to integrate/help every newcomer arriving though Ellis Island (NY port of entry).
I hope this answers some questions.
Labor Unions make a point of reminding their members that they are standing against “the man” and they are democrats – and you should be one too. “You owe us” does resonate, and gratitude is important, but then the democrats do things like open the borders and bring in 20 million scab workers. So the loyalty doesn’t go in two directions; it’s a matter of convenience.

Every single time I’ve been somehow acquainted with any group (ANY) that tells me, “it’s us against them” – it turns out that somebody is trying to manipulate me or control me for the sake of “their” greater good. It can be political, religious, ethnic, whatever. Thus, I live in one of the more remote places in America where I don’t have to buy into that continual push and pull, and I can pick and choose (or not). I’m not remote enough because I still get 10 spam phone calls a day from Republicans dragging the sack for money, guilt trip e-mails and mailers that tell me that unfortunately, I can’t consider myself MAGA because I haven’t given them money lately.
I think I failed to make the point that the Jewish landsmannschaften (hometown societies – made up of people from the same small areas/towns/villages/shtetlach in Europe speaking the same idiom) were (eagerly) taken over by the Democrat party in the latter part of the 19th Century and the first part of the twentieth.
Perhaps, more importantly, it provided the immigrants with access to a great many social activities – say, sort of like the local pub in Britain, as well as (more or less) formal discussion groups, gambling dens, “brothels”, etc.

Fauci may escape from criminal charges, but the personal injury attorneys are salivating for the opportunity. By genetic heritage I am 7/8 eastern euro jewish and 1/8 french canadian catholic, and I mention genetics because I’ve never met a practicing jew, only people who label themselves as jews based on their genetic line… and are about as jewish as dylan mulvaney is a woman. Whereupon said MP draws his .45 1911A1, yells “Halt!” in a loud voice, and fires a round into the dirt bank at the road side. Holstering his pistol, he turns back to the prisoner and says, “Finish that smoke and load up”.

Being a car salesman, my people watching is akin to a leopard scanning the Savannah and that hasn’t stopped with retirement. Along with looking for prey is looking for predators or, if more accurate, situational awarness. Even living in a secure building I do a scan before fully leaving the elevator, a scan of the parking lot before exiting or returning to my car and only sitting at a table in a resturant; never a booth. A grandson was amused by my seating choice at a Waffle House. Does anyone else check where the exits are when entering an establishment?

Situational awareness: Couple of evenings ago I backed the ranch’s kei truck into the hay area. Opened the door and proceeded to step out. Almost on top of a rattlesnake. I paused long enough for him to get safely away from me, then I hunted him down. He made it under a CONEX, so is safe for a while till he comes out again. A foot to the right and the kei truck would have squished him. A few feet forward and he’d have been able to strike at my leg. Everyone at the ranch has been informed, now know the sound and signs, and their DEFCON is much higher now till we get him corralled and evicted the way the Poles are handling illegals.
A gunslinger never sits with his back to the door, and knows all exits and a preferred direction of travel.

Not that I haven’t done comparable things. So last fall I was in the Toronto area one evening and saw a nice-looking Afghan restaurant across the street from the LCBO in a pretty good area. I liked the Helmand Restaurant in Cambridge, MA (originally owned by the Karzai family, yes, the Afghan President one) so I decided to check it out. I step in the door and all eyes inside turn to me. The place is packed with Afghan men ranging from 20’s to probably 50’s. Not “Canadians of Afghan ancestry” and certainly not actual Canadians (as in white Scots/English people) enjoying a vaunted “diverse ethnic cuisine” (that somehow justifies turning our countries into third world cesspits). These were fiercely-bearded men, most in shalwar kameez, all speaking in Pashto before the entire place went dead silent on seeing me.
I did not turn around and leave. I literally backed out through both sets of doors.

As to “foreign influence” in American journalism and the infotainment complex, we all know that the overwhelming majority of disinformation comes from Russia. It’s Russia Russia Russia 25/8/366. The Chinese are pikers compared to Russia. Why, I can’t <i?think of another group that has such wildly disproportionate influence on American beliefs, culture, and foreign policy. Not. One. Group.
