Fine and good, but in an 80-yo, first of all, increased risk of cancer thirty years in the future is not his biggest problem. Nor is it number 2, 3, or 10 on his medical problem list. Second, I’m leery of CTing some old guy because of contrast nephropathy (the iodine-based contrast agent is renally cleared and is tough on the kidneys) WAY more than because of radiation. Perceived risk and actual risk sometimes don’t align.

               I’m sitting in the peon “lounge” in NYC Penn Station. (I miss my Metropolitan (elite) Lounge.) It’s a horseshoe-shaped bench. A morbidly obese young white male (jaw length black hair, shitty beard) is snoring with his belly sticking waaaay out (he has an outie as well). He woke briefly to jam his left hand down his pants. Rearranged meat and two veg for about 20 sec then gave the whole mess a good scratching. A young woman on the opposite bench is covertly staring in fascinated revulsion.

               It’s pretty crowded, but crotchscratcher had his own bench. Until me.I’m on the far end of the horseshoe. Then an orthodox Jewish guy sat on the other end of the horseshoe. Orthodox man is making a phone about someone called Mendl and Mendl’s struggle to balance daily and yeshiva life.. Fat boy is digging in his right armpit. An elderly man wearing a cruise ship badge is walking around taking photos of it all. Ah, glamorous life in the Big City!

               I think that I’ve mentioned it on the blog, but I sat (aisle) in the back of the bus with two Argentine males. An obese man sitting next to me had his hand down his pants pulling on his junk for half of the flight back from Japan. I think that I connected and changed planes in Norita. I’d been in Hong Kong if memory serves. Not that it matters. It was a long flight. Both men sweated and stank.

            3. My life is glamorous indeed. It’s after 0030 local time and I’m stuck on the rails somewhere a little east of Old Saybrook, CT. My friend on the Acela (I am on the peasant NE Regional) is stuck somewhere in the vicinity of New London. Some electrical problem with the entire system. At least my train has power (and wifi) again. It went dark for about 30 minutes earlier. And the car filled with the stench of human excrement. Apparently some idiot was messing with the toilet. But now the ventilation system is working at least.

               I was wiling away the hours reading echocardiograms, but frankly it’s not great on limited bandwidth. At least my fellow passengers are well behaved. They let a bunch of “volunteers” off at the Old Saybrook station proper, to catch Ubers or something. For me Uber home was north of $700 due to surge pricing. Then while still physically at the station (and not moving one bit) a shirty conductor refused to let anyone else off the train. “You people had your chance, and you didn’t take it. I am not going to open the door and let you off. None of y’all.” I pointed out that this was most likely a felony. “This is essentially kidnapping.” Unserious people laughed. A serious-looking woman corrected me with the proper legal term. The conductor was NOT amused.

               Ah, train is finally moving. Was supposed to be home before 10pm. Now prolly getting home after 3am. Which normally wouldn’t bother me THAT much, except that I have a surgery (on me, not by me) scheduled for 0900 tomorrow. Outpatient surgery, but still. Grrr.

         They run a weekend thrift shop in my home town. I used to go regularly to find old (film) cameras. Got to know a few of the guys. They suggested I join up. 8. The difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation is really important. For reasons I don’t understand, people are becoming afraid of radios – even people who should know better. The best way to think of radio is as being far infrared light. Maybe just call it Very Far IR; the point is that non-ionizing radiation is just light. Yes, in the wrong situations you can get burned by it, just like you can by infrared light, but even sunlight is more dangerous (as the guy on FB says). The regulations of power levels from high power radio sources are really pretty well thought out. A WiFi router is NOT capable of hurting you; a microwave oven which operates on almost the exact same frequencies, is capable of hurting you – if you defeat the safeties (or you have a really old one that never had the safeties). It’s purely power exposure, in Watts per square inch (or cm – whatever). In the past, I’ve held my hand in front of a microwave power amplifier to verify it was actually producing power so my hand would get warmer. No, never got an actual burn let alone skin cancer.

   3. Your analysis is good, SiG. I have an unscientific and purely anecdotal observation that might possibly be germane here. In the early 90s I worked at The Analytic Sciences Corporation mostly doing SETA work. One project there was staffed largely by former military folks that, during their military careers, had largely worked at long-range radar sites in particular locations. They were mostly analysts who had stood watches in buildings in relatively close proximity to antennas radiating kW of power. Their military service was mostly in the 1960s, some earlier. By the early 90s, a suspiciously large number of these gents were diagnosed with testicular cancer, and some cases were fatal.

      Now, this was a very specific case of occupational hazard of sustained exposure to non-ionizing radiation that would not be commonplace for almost all of us. This analysis is also purely anecdotal based on suspicion rather than a scientific, longitudinal study. I don’t claim that these observations can be compared to or extrapolated to exposure to non-ionizing radiation at much lower levels (orders of magnitude lower, actually) and for more brief periods.

      1. The most important question in any pretty much every correlation study is “cause or coincidence?” Any story like the radar operators’ cancers or Ed Bonderenka’s kidney stone can’t prove anything but could lead to a good experiment that could. Big, expensive and horribly unethical if done to people, but the only way to actually know you get. Actual cancer clusters appear at random just by the way random numbers work. I live a few miles from Patrick Space Force Base (used to be called an Air Force base) and there was a big story about a cancer cluster near the base a while ago, so people assumed they were polluting the water. Nothing was ever found.

         If you ever read William Briggs blog (“statistician to the stars”) his perpetual joke is that the experimenters test for cause or coincidence with a variable which has historically been called p – the probability that the effect of the test was random. If p is small, generally less than .05 (5%) they say the effect didn’t happen at random and the smaller the p value, the better. A long setup for the joke that he calls them “wee pee” values and experimenters bragging about how small their p is.

         1. Of course you are right, SiG, and I cannot mathematically defend any purported confidence level in my observations. A truly good study would examine health histories for a sufficiently large population of all military radar operators at the subject sites during the 1950s and 60s. Naturally, that’s the least likely study that the military will want if it exposes any potential liability. These men have aged and are aging and also likely to die of the usual causes typical for their generation, with the possible added complications attendant to their honorable military service.

    1) TdA taking over parts of Denver and Aurora, clear domestic terrorists. Nada.
    2) Pot Shops…excuuuse me…RecMed, considered “legal” so the DeptRev can rake in more “revenue”…until it didn’t and the Law of Unintended Consequences created more “highway sobriety” problems.
    3) Denver and some other cities have become havens for the homeless despite throwing 100’s of millions of taxpayers confiscated money at the problem…only to attract more with (2) above.
    4) Zero proper forestry so wildfires are ripe with the ensuing tinderbox, even in developed areas as response is next to useless…yet the Insurance Commissioner, who is in bed with insurance scammers…errr…companies, jack up prices on everybody in the state so residents pay twice…thru the nose.
    5) Denver is a so-called sanctuary city (see (1)(2)(3) above)
    6) Colorado DA continues to persecute a Christian baker despite getting its head handed to it in court…over a cake.
    7) SOS Griswold attempts to keep PDJT off the ballot, directly interfering with the election…all the while the DA imprisons Tina Peters because as an election official she found and preserved fraudulent 2020 election results, refusing orders from Griswold to erase all election data (because it was against the law to erase said data).
    8) Roads are a mess, especially EVERYbridge transition, even on newly rebuilt, rebuilt, repaved, roads, especially I25, which for stretches is like riding a buckboard on a 2-track.
    9) 27c tax on deliveries, every delivery…regardless fuel taxes etc already paid for the privilege to drive on crappy roads the Romans would scowl at for being so poor. And like clockwork, said tax has magically been raised to 29c.

    …and Polis is nowhere to be found, the guy is useless except to ruin the place into the ground (with his “influential” pals…all in Denver, the epicenter of Lefty idiocy and grift).
    Our state is failing yet the Dems at every level are peeing down our necks while telling us it’s raining. There will be zero consequences for these criminals…we’ll likely move as they are taxing people to the hilt while providing nothing by way of proper infrastructure for OUR money.
