Barack Hussein Obama and others made a decision not to remember the attacks but to characterize September 11 as a day to remember community organizers and agitators (which Obama was before becoming president). It morphed slightly into a ‘day of service,’ but that too was planned to dilute the recollection of the attack. President George W. Bush used the attack as a pretext to attack Iraq in the Second Gulf War, even though Iraq was a secular state and no Iraqis were involved in the attack. The additional pretext for the war was to remove weapons of mass destruction from Iraqi inventories, even though no weapons of mass destruction were found. I don’t mourn Saddam Hussein’s demise, but the US bungled the aftermath of the war, empowering Iran, which Iraq had checked. Add to that Obama’s tacit support for Iran, and we have the world in which we now live.

I’ve previously thought that the Democrats’ second reason for opposing Trump at every turn was the one they have shouted from the rooftops: they believe that all of his policies are so wrong-headed and certain to fail. They are doing everything they can to prevent the damaging outcome of those policies.
I still think that some Dems believe that. But I used to think that nearly ALL Dems believed it, either because they don’t know any better, or because they’ve been seduced or brainwashed by the pleasures and self-satisfaction of believing yourself to be one of the good guys, on the right side of history, fighting against dark forces.
But I now think that the elites and the most intelligent people in the Democrat party and legacy media are opposing Trump for the opposite reason. They are not trying to stop him because of how disastrous his policies will be; they are trying to stop him because of how successful his policies will be, if he is allowed to carry them out.

VM Opinion: If I were Vlad (yes, we know he ‘goes hard’), I’d leave the Poles alone. There is an institutional memory of Russia that goes back to the Winged Hussars. Joseph Brusuelas highlights that U.S. oil producers face mounting pressure amid global oversupply and weakening futures prices for West Texas Intermediate (WTI). Futures trading below $61 per barrel, currently around $61.87, hover uncomfortably close to the estimated breakeven range of $61–$70, threatening the profitability and competitiveness of many domestic producers, especially in the face of potential production increases from OPEC+.
VM Commentary – I am not an oil expert, but I have some knowledge of the business. Last week, when I was in Baghdad, I had a long meeting with Ali Nizar Fayeq al-Shatari, Director General of SOMO, the Iraqi oil marketing company. Ali, a knowledgeable and personable man, gave me more insight than I previously had on the Iraqi end of the business. The specific content of our discussion was confidential. However, it’s essential to keep in mind the varying costs of production in various countries. Oil is an international commodity. The price fluctuates based on global supply and demand. American light sweet shale oil is expensive to produce. If the price drops below their production threshold, they stop producing even though the general demand for oil remains the same.
The US is the world’s largest oil producer and, thanks to the shale boom, has been a net exporter of petroleum products since 2020. But we still consume the vast majority of what we produce at home. Exports are a balancing act.
Different refineries are configured for different crude grades, and the global market allows us to swap barrels efficiently. The claim that U.S. oil is “clean” and foreign oil is “dirty” oversimplifies reality. Shale oil is lighter and sweeter, yes, but U.S. refiners also import heavier crude because many Gulf Coast refineries were built decades ago to process it. That doesn’t make one “clean” and the other “dirty”, it’s just a matter of chemical composition and refining economics.
The Alaska logistics story is outdated. While some Alaskan crude does head to Asia for cost reasons, the majority of U.S. exports today are from the Gulf Coast, not Alaska. Our refineries are more than capable of blending domestic light crude with imports, and the idea that we’re simply shipping all “the good stuff” overseas is wrong. The global oil market isn’t some morality play of “dirty foreign oil versus clean American oil.” It’s an integrated system where barrels move based on refinery configurations, shipping costs, and price differentials. Pretending it’s just “we sell the good stuff, we buy the bad stuff” misses how complex and interconnected the system really is, in addition to being mistaken.

But as Stalin became entrenched in power, Bukharin found that he was no less vulnerable to the dictator’s wrath than anyone else. Accused of conspiracy in 1937, Bukharin was executed the following year. Bukharin is credited with a grim joke: “We may have two parties—one in power, the other in prison.” He might have added, “or dead.” By the time of Bukharin’s arrest, Stalin was systematically replacing the people who had secured his ascent to power with a new generation of young and ambitious politicians and officials for whom total loyalty to the leader would be everything.
Among elites in Russia today, something like Bukharin’s story is happening once again. On July 7, Roman Starovoit, the minister of transport, killed himself with a firearm a few hours after being sacked by Russian President Vladimir Putin. A few days earlier, Andrei Badalov, the vice president of the oil transportation company Transneft, fell from the window of an apartment building. Badalov was only the latest of a series of top officials in the oil and gas sector who have been purged or died mysteriously since Putin’s “special military operation” in Ukraine began in 2022. According to Novaya Gazeta, the independent Russian newspaper, there have been 56 deaths of successful businesspeople and officials under strange circumstances since February 2022. Many of them have fallen out of windows. More and more, people who have loyally served Putin’s system are being persecuted, mainly on the grounds of corruption.
In 2024, the Ministry of Defense was hit with a sweeping corruption crackdown. In May of that year, Sergei Shoigu, the longtime defense minister known for his proximity to Putin, was sacked and appointed to the primarily ceremonial position of chair of the Security Council. Shoigu’s deputy Timur Ivanov was less fortunate: he was arrested on large-scale corruption charges and, in July, sentenced to 13 years in prison—one of the longest sentences for any current or former high-ranking Russian official since the end of the Cold War. Since then, there have been many more arrests—especially of regional functionaries at various levels. As the Putin regime turns on its own people, it, too, has begun to replace them with a new breed of loyalists, people whose primary qualifications are their apparent fealty to the leader, and sometimes their participation in the war. Still, Putin prefers experienced and talented technocrats for the most responsible positions, such as governors and ministers.
After more than three and a half years of war and mounting economic challenges, Putin’s aim is not to fight corruption. His goal is to avoid internal threats. And to do that, he needs to turn the elites into a frightened and therefore controllable class. With the demise of Starovoit, a trusted Putin official, a feeling has emerged among Russian elites that no one is protected and that loyalty alone is not always enough to survive in the system. As in the Stalin era, it is not clear who might be next.

Nobody asked me, but… If Charlie Kirk had a couple of drones in the air over the event, the shooter wouldn’t have been able to position himself on a roof. The same would have been true with Pres. Trump in Butler, PA. Drones are not always the answer because there are weather events such as strong winds that make them diffcult to operate, and if that is the case, you put your own people on the high ground. For a school like Utah Valley University with 40,000 students and a big budget buying three drones (two is one and one is none) for events or just school security and training operators shouldn’t be a big budget item. Put low light/NV cameras on them and use them to augment parking lot security at night, for example. I’m not peddling drones, but in many of these situations, they would have acted as a preventative measure. It doesn’t mean that a sniper (we who have been understand) can’t set up a hide days in advance, but it would keep people off rooftops.
They left couldn’t debate Charlie Kirk, so they killed him. There is a lesson in this.

Today is my bd. I’m still more than a little peeved on our country being attacked 24 yr ago. I fully agree that the left are afraid not of Trumps policies failing, but succeeding gloriously exposing their incompetence. Reference Iraq And WMD: When Saddam purchased gas to attack the Iranians, everyone was all for it. Years ago, the western nations agreed to let Saddam have the gas. After the Iran Iraq war, Saddam started using it on Kurds living in Iraq. I had a good discussion with an Iraqi oil man who was drafted into the armed forces for the Iran business because he could read maps and tell people what to do. His helicopter unit was gassing the Kurds and whoever was nearby without his knowledge. After he checked on it, Saddam’s men were sent to gather him into the fold, but he and his family had already fled the coop.

The western intelligence agencies knew how much gas, what type of gas, the supplier and where it was stored. Apparently, the gas was transported out of the country immediately prior to Gulf War I which gave the narrative that there were no WMDs in Iraq when our troops moved in. I worked in a sulfur processing facility. The molten sulfur arrived by barges, trucks, and rail cars. Dumped into pits heated by steam coils, the sulfur was eventually loaded in a ship and sent to a facility that was a key player in the pharmaceutical and fertilizer industry. The facility was old, but the sulfur they processed was from a completely different source than when the facility was designed.
The old timers worked in sulfur mines, which had all closed due to the changes in the processing of crude. Where large boilers once supplied steam to be injected into underground deposits for recovery, the new processes in refineries allowed the crude full of sulfur to be stripped of the sulfur. This “sweetened” the crude, which allowed the refineries to produce crude that once was not usable. The cost of mining was a waste of money when thousands of tons of sulfur became a waste product of refineries. Refineries adapted to the changing raw product market, and the Gulf Coast continued being a major supplier of processed petroleum.
I commuted to my NYC office in the North Tower of the WTC from DC three days a week. I was there for the for the 1993 attack and the 2001 attack. Many friends died at Cantor Fitzgerald and other firms. I hate Islam and any apologist. Bush is a bastard for the lie that Islam is a religion of peace. We are at war. West Europe is lost. Black flag is raised. I am a 35 year cancer survivor with a new recurrence. Let it come.

RE. Kirk/University/drones: LL, IIRC you recommended the book “Eyes In The Sky” about Gorgon Stare et al. I agree that a drone/UAS/UAV would have been a good thing, but without eyes to monitor the feed and act upon an identified anomaly, it would be a retroactive (non-preventative) effort used chasing down a suspect. OK but not great.
The loss of Kirk in addition to other happenings this week has led me to deep thoughts regarding our way forward. We’re transcending the ballot box and soapbox stages and are toeing the cartridge box. Is Kirk’s assassination our generation’s Martin Luther King moment?
Regarding BART: let it die, seal off entrance locations to anything other than public streets (cannot get directly into buildings from underground), then allow/push it as homeless encampment. No maintenance, lights and air circulation only. All funding for homeless shelters goes to fund the power and air costs. Period. No police, no monitoring, no maintenance. You break it, you fix it or do without. The opposite of the underground populace in “Demolition Man”.

Cut the railroads and the only supply line is by sea. It is a long way from China to Russia via the Lofoten Islands which would be the safest route.

Re Charlie Kirk, yes, drones would have been nice, the UVU apparently only had six officers available to ‘support’ security. But I now think that the elites and the most intelligent people in the Democrat party and legacy media are opposing Trump for the opposite reason. They are not trying to stop him because of how disastrous his policies will be; they are trying to stop him because of how successful his policies will be, if he is allowed to carry them out.

It surveys societies where the outside enemies have been conquered and the society now has civil liberties. Somehow, the people in the society then start hating themselves, and don’t stand up for the values which made them successful.
