Democrat-run cities are in the crosshairs of Donald Trump’s common-sense revolution.
As he’s done with immigration, elite academia, and federal spending, Trump is shedding light on another long-ignored crisis in America. Our cities are decaying, and we’ve come to accept it.
Just as we had once accepted broken borders, illegal aliens, and revolutionary campuses as unavoidable facts of modern American life, we had come to understand that cities were places whose inhabitants were expected to endure an uncomfortable degree of daily risk.
When I hear Trump talk about common sense, I take it to mean that we don’t have to live with broken or failing things just because no one has fixed them yet. There are ways to address problems, clear out the ruins, and rebuild. We have options.
The president’s fundamental ability to remind Americans of that fact surely accounts for much of his popularity. How Trump approaches reversing the decay of American cities is another thing.
And the uniqueness of Washington, DC’s governing status means that whatever he has planned for the country’s capital isn’t replicable anywhere else. However, his mere act of bringing the matter to light—beginning with the riots in Los Angeles—is a significant and welcome step in itself.
I live in Midtown Manhattan, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that I witness criminal activity every time I walk around my neighborhood. It’s usually on the order of open drug use and vagrancy, but I’ve also seen too many instances of disturbing the peace, public urination (and worse), harassment, and assault. That’s without getting on the subway, where all bets are off.
After 2020, once crime spiked in New York City and elsewhere, I remember saying that we’d know we were back in the bad old days when the Three Card Monte hustlers set up their sidewalk tables once again. I was in Times Square this weekend, and there they were, taking tourists for everything in their fanny packs.
I try to avoid Times Square, where there are shootings roughly every couple of days. So, for all I know, they’ve been back for years. It’s true that, statistically, the level of crime in New York City isn’t near its late-20th-century highs. And this year, we’ve seen particular improvement.
But for one thing, statistics don’t speak to the sense of menace one feels in a city where repeat offenders are known to walk free, “broken windows” policing is considered something to be ashamed of, and the likely next mayor is looking to replace cops with social workers.
Furthermore, Trump has also highlighted the fact that the system of official numbers used to capture a given situation is flawed. “The statistics” are somewhat akin to “the science” these days. Following them doesn’t mean what you think it does.
Jobs numbers are adjusted and adjusted; Anthony Fauci’s herd-immunity target was a fluid fiction; the press and most everyone else take Hamas’s blunt lies as the official Gaza casualty count; and Trump’s taking charge of DC law enforcement has highlighted the problem of crime stats there.
So, for now, I’m going with my five senses on the state of criminal activity in my hometown. Believe it or not, what I’m trying to say is that we’ve got some good news here. We’re admitting to yet another problem. Which means something can be done about it. We’ve already seen it happen on other fronts.
Joe Biden said that his hands were tied on the border. They weren’t, and Trump did what was needed.
The president is also forcing elite universities to take some action on anti-Semitism. We know from history that urban crime is not a steadily rising force. All you need is the will and the means to take action. And, yes, the acknowledgment that something must be done.

Donk funding: Turned on the radio yesterday morning only to discover the local NPR station was still broadcasting their usual screed, without any discernible reduction in what they so charmingly refer to as “content.” Lyin’ bastids promised me they’d be off the air without gubmit cheese support, yet they still manage to infest the allegedly “public” radio frequencies. I am disappoint, and bitterly so.
NPR’s total annual budget is around $300 million. A small portion, approximately 1%, comes directly from federal funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which amounts to around $3 million. The majority of NPR’s funding comes from other sources, like member station fees, individual donations, and grants from foundations and corporations.

PS – Anecdotal. The only time I was sued for violent conduct was by a cat burglar – entered into an occupied residence at night to steal. They called the police. Two of us responded. The family cheered when I pulled his arm from its socket and kicked him in the face a few times. His claim was rejected by the court. It was one of those FAFO situations. I recall another situation where a burglar ran afoul of a high school football coach who returned home at lunch and found the inner-city person ransacking his home. I found the coach on the roadway in front of the victim residence with the perpetrator’s face on the pavement (gravel road). He was “sanding” the gravel with the suspect’s face. I waited until he was done to take the suspect into custody. There was very little nose left and the skin was gone. The report reflected that the coach used only the force necessary to defend himself – you have to cover the public when they do the right thing. The inner city person was convicted of second degree burglary and did time. I’m sure that the skin mostly grew back. Sort of white scar tissue on black.

World class karate competitor was visiting a friend. Their two wives returned from shopping, being followed by some wannabe gangsters.
