I could sit on my deck and pick my elk and take the 20-yard lay-up shot, clean it, skin it, and butcher it in the garage, but no, I don’t. I don’t use predator calls to lure in cats, wolves, or coyotes. Hemingway said best: “There is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it never care for anything else thereafter.”
This leads me to another shameless plug for Mike Watson’s non-fiction account, Hunting in the Shadows!
This is a non-fiction book of history. The events described here occurred in Borneo during the Indonesian Confrontation in the latter half of 1964 and the Republic of Vietnam during that country’s fight for its existence throughout 1965-1968. Malaysia, with the assistance of its allies, prevailed in the Confrontation. Unfortunately, the Republic of Vietnam, after being abandoned by its allies, succumbed to a full sale Communist armored and infantry invasion in April 1975.
This is the story of an Australian Army officer who was seconded to support the efforts of the Republic of Vietnam in their clandestine war against the National Liberation Front. The story is told precisely as events unfolded without efforts to minimize or maximize. It’s a story of a brutal civil war, proxy war, love, death, and revenge in a wartorn setting. Both the government of the Republic of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front (Viet Kong) engaged in systematic assassination as a matter of policy. Reading this book requires that you lens it in the context of people and events as they took place.

#1 – I think they used that particular platform as a command vehicle. I can’t be certain at this late date but it’s a pattern that the Germans followed during WW2.
As soon as LL began plugging Mike Watson’s book (or as soon as I noticed it), I purchased it through Amazon (there being no other choice); usually I look though the on-line used book vendors, cheapo that I am. I used to spend my lunch money, 25¢ to purchase the dime SciFi and murder mystery paperbacks sometime back in the last century.
N.B.: Karens (and their husbands and sons) would IMHO be far better off reading a précis; it tells the reader of war, not the gory details of dying on the front lines, but the silent war that may determine the outcome of one or more front line engagements; the Karens won’t even permit the males under their control to see the Hollywood-sanitized versions – “no story, too gory”.
Otherwise, pick up a copy (I know all the readers here have already read it) and lend it to your friend(s – if you get it back).
1955 at fourteen, my folks found out that I was being given training at a range in NH with a .22 rifle, the point being made to my parents (they weren’t exactly pro-gun) that I was going to be using one in four years: may as well make sure I could shoot one properly though I’d been shooting on that range since 1950.

Finished Mike’s book last week…his recollection of names and places is incredible. Even more incredible are the operational aspects. Hunting “in the Shadows” for sure. How many in suburbia have a clue as to the hard “things” some are tasked and get to live with? Perspective matters.

On a lighter note…because we can all use reminders of SISU MAGA “Witness” America as it should be, not controlled by ninny’s , nudges, dufuses, and political Marxist criminals in suits [and one wearing Keds]. This video is incredible. I know where this farm is generally located, having spent a lot of time in Lancaster. I focused on the logistics brought to bear to manage the skills, materials, design, etc….all to make this happen in two weeks. Then there’s the mass of humanity (men on the job, woman doing all they do to keep the men going and for-legged stock cared for)…all to “help another in their community”. No one was standing around on their phones, they were WORKING (in 95 Pennsylvania heat no less), and knew what to do. It was like stepping into a time machine, a powerful reminder of what once was, especially if you are old enough to remember some of it. It would take a day to read all the displayed letters and other correspondence. The most moving exhibit is a wooden mail crate (about 8 ft. square) full to the top with mail sacks. It is mail that came in while he was in the hospital, but never opened because he passed away. A note says the staff will pick one from time to time and open it for display.

Love it. After Eastwood’s “Bridges” came out we were heading to Illinois so stopped and stayed around Winterset, IA, to view the covered bridges (were theirs much different than the Bucks County, PA, ones? Slightly). Went into the town square, had lunch at the cafe’ and saw the placard for Wayne’s boyhood home, so drove over — seriously modest beginnings seemed to shape his lifelong character (plus proving they do grow ’em big in Iowa).
