** This week in History – One of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history occurred on Krakatoa (also called Krakatau), a small, uninhabited volcanic island east of Sumatra and west of Java, on August 27, 1883. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw five cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis, and killed 36,000 people.
Krakatoa exhibited its first stirrings in more than 200 years on May 20, 1883. A German warship passing by reported a seven-mile-high cloud of ash and dust over Krakatoa. For the next two months, similar explosions would be witnessed by commercial liners and natives in nearby Java and Sumatra. With little to no idea of the impending catastrophe, the local inhabitants greeted the volcanic activity with festive excitement.
On August 26 and August 27, excitement turned to horror as Krakatoa literally blew itself apart, setting off a chain of natural disasters that would be felt around the world for years to come. An enormous blast on the afternoon of August 26 destroyed the northern two-thirds of the island; as it plunged into the Sunda Strait, between the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean, the gushing mountain generated a series of pyroclastic flows (fast-moving fluid bodies of molten gas, ash, and rock) and monstrous tsunamis that swept over nearby coastlines. Four more eruptions beginning at 5:30 a.m. the following day proved cataclysmic. The explosions could be heard as far as 3,000 miles away, and ash was propelled to a height of 50 miles. Fine dust from the explosion drifted around the earth, causing spectacular sunsets and forming an atmospheric veil that lowered temperatures worldwide by several degrees.
Of the estimated 36,000 deaths resulting from the eruption, at least 31,000 were caused by the tsunamis created when much of the island fell into the water. The greatest of these waves measured 120 feet high, and washed over nearby islands, stripping away vegetation and carrying people out to sea. Another 4,500 people were scorched to death from the pyroclastic flows that rolled over the sea, stretching as far as 40 miles, according to some sources.
In addition to Krakatoa, which is still active, Indonesia has another 130 active volcanoes, the most of any country in the world.

“Unintended Consequences” above is referring to blacks. Now consider UC2: there actually is a group that HAS been and IS unfairly targeted, persecuted, kicked down, arrested, and jailed, while simultaneously being told that THEY are the oppressors and the root cause of all social problems. This group are not blacks. Now for the cherry of irony and supreme lack of self-awareness on this crap sundae. Consider a ruling class that tells itself, and forces everyone else to agree, that THEY have been unfairly targeted and persecuted, and the only reason for this is because of jealousy on the part of those they are “helping, educating, and uplifting” (especially if the beneficiaries of their sanctimonious condescension only want to be left alone). AOC is the poster child for such people with her comment that her critics are sexually frustrated and “just want to date me.”

I have a question: the B-36? on the bottom of the illustration, is that a crew compartment in front of the rudder? Why would they place them that far back? Bumpy ride I would imagine. I understand there was a pressurized tunnel in the plane, but didn’t know of a crew area. What was the purpose of that area?

I don’t own a welder, but sure know how to use one! My welds aren’t the beautiful “Stack-O-Dimes” you see, but they have good penetration, no blow outs, and are strong.

Back to the vehicle 1. The picture probably is from 1960-1985. The vehicle is a M-37. The fatigues are solid color. The helmets are M1. Camo pattern fatigues, Kelvar helmets, and HMWWVs are late 1985 and later issue.
The picture might be even older but black/white doesn’t show if the boots are brown.
I can’t identify the weapon the two man crew is manning. Maybe a M2 with a long barrel?

Gun is an M3 37mm gun. In a rotating mount.
As to the position of the .50BMG, the normal position, pintle mount or scarf ring behind the driver, is taken by the aforementioned 37mm gun and its ammo, so the only location available is, yep, off the front.
Which isn’t bad, for an AA mount, as you can see the user can get excellent elevation from the forward area.
Bad if one is trying to use it while mobile, but…
Remember, during WWII, they mounted .50BMGs on a pintle mount on the top back of Sherman turrets. You stood on the back deck to operate the gun. Same with the tank destroyers.

It led to the “year without summer” in Europe. A volcanic style “nuclear winter”.

1883 was another year without a summer.
But Tambora was far worse, several years of bad summers.
Then there’s the Icelandic volcanoes that screwed Europe, especially France in the late 1780’s that led to the French Revolution and other issues.
Mt. St. Helens also screwed up weather for a year or two, but not as bad as Krakatoa or Tambora.
Pyroclastic Flows were the big killer in the 1902 eruption of Mt. Pelee in Martinique.
The Fencer was a Soviet copy of the F-111, except for the material used to build it and the internal systems. Ours were better, but the ‘hard ride’ autopilot took a while to work out…
