I have no problem with aggressively serving an arrest warrant, as we did in the recent case of United States of America vs Nickolas Maduro Moros. Taking things from there, everything becomes sticky. President Donald Trump said that the United States would “run” Venezuela until “a safe, proper and judicious transition” is achieved.
There are security reasons why congressional members were not briefed. When you are a member of Congress and actively leaking where ICE agents/missions are located, the likelihood that you would leak a mission like this is 100%.

** Oil – There is a blockade, and Venezuela won’t export a single drop of oil until the US approves the shipment. The Shadow Fleet is trying to readjust, and because oil is an international commodity (price set by supply and demand), there will be a few ripples. Venezuelan storage ashore is very near capacity, and they’ll soon need to stop pumping oil.
** (Francisco Poleo) The U.S. does not believe that Nobel Prize Laureate María Corina Machado and the opposition have the operational capacity to seize power in Venezuela because they do not control, or meaningfully fracture, the military. If they did, power would have shifted immediately after the 2024 presidential election. It did not. For an extended period, U.S. officials, including Marco Rubio, were in constant communication with Machado and her team. They were asked repeatedly for proof of a concrete plan, not just to win power symbolically, but to retain it in practice: chain of command, military alignment, institutional control, day-after governance. The answers were consistently evasive, justified by security concerns, but never substantiated. At that point, from the U.S. government’s perspective, the opposition ceased to look like a viable transition mechanism and became a political wager with no enforcement arm.
** Red China has invested billions in Venezuela’s oil industry. Since Maduro’s arrest, they claim that the agreements it has with Caracas over oil exports from the country will be ‘protected by law’. I suspect that the law will change, and the full faith and credit of the new Venezuelan government might not back their equity interest to their satisfaction. Maybe the government of East China (Taiwan) will have the opportunity to invest in the new Venezuelan marketplace?

Six weeks ago, Senator Mark Kelly — and five other members of Congress — released a reckless and seditious video that was clearly intended to undermine good order and military discipline. As a retired Navy Captain who is still receiving a military pension, Captain Kelly knows he is still accountable to military justice. And the Department of War — and the American people — expect justice.
Therefore, in response to Senator Mark Kelly’s seditious statements — and his pattern of reckless misconduct — the Department of War is taking administrative action against Captain Mark E. Kelly, USN (Ret). The department has initiated retirement grade determination proceedings under 10 U.S.C. § 1370(f), with a reduction in his retired grade resulting in a corresponding decrease in retired pay. To ensure this action, the Secretary of War has also issued a formal Letter of Censure, which outlines the totality of Captain (for now) Kelly’s reckless misconduct. This Censure is a necessary step in the process and will be placed in Captain Kelly’s official and permanent military personnel file.
Captain Kelly has been provided notice of the basis for this action and has thirty days to submit a response. The retirement grade determination process, directed by Secretary Hegseth, will be completed within 45 days.
Captain Kelly’s status as a sitting United States Senator does not exempt him from accountability, and further violations could result in further action.
These actions are based on Captain Kelly’s public statements from June through December 2025 in which he characterized lawful military operations as illegal and counseled members of the Armed Forces to refuse lawful orders. This conduct was seditious in nature and violated Articles 133 and 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, to which Captain Kelly remains subject as a retired officer receiving pay.

If the West were rational, it would not have given him shelter in Paris. Rather, it would have shipped Khomeini back to Iran, to be most likely murdered by the Shah. Or it would have quietly disappeared him. That the news people DIDN’T go running to Maduro to ask how he feels about the upcoming event is a minor miracle.
I don’t know how the U.S. can fill the power vacuum in Venezuela, but with the high stakes involved, the subterfuge, manipulation, and outright violence, it can turn it into another failed experiment. The meddling by U.S. political leaders will be bad enough, and with foreign powers out to plunder, it will take some shrewd leadership to keep the citizens focused in the right direction.
We might start by organizing the million plus Venezuelans living in the US and sending select ones back with our backing. There will be unforeseen consequences to be sure. Still, what we have done in the past around the world hasn’t worked that well.

Somewhat ironically, even Stewart wasn’t buying Kelly’s shit, and among other things, called out Kelly for trying to put ordinary low-level servicemen in the crosshairs of trouble by suggesting that THEY refuse “illegal” orders when even the highest legal authorities are undecided about certain particular issues. And much as it pains me to say, Stewart is absolutely correct on this.
