** Headline: The Los Angeles City Council has approved $1 million in short-term funding to keep LAPD hiring recruits through January and February. With training equipment and other overhead, that’s something on the order of seven people. It’s an election year. There was a time when LAPD retained people because they operated on a city retirement program rather than the PERS (State pension system) or the Chapter 37 system used by many California counties. Now, LA City pensions vest in ten years, so after ten years, you can lateral elsewhere into a reciprocal pension system. Many LAPD officers do it because it’s not a great place to work. So they become a training agency, and their best and brightest leave. Those who have bad employment histories remain, are promoted, and the place becomes toxic.
** President Trump’s administration secured the construction of a $7.4 billion critical minerals smelter and processing facility in Tennessee. It will create 540K tons per year of strategic rare Earth materials. The War Department is a stakeholder in the venture. The production list includes: gallium, germanium, indium, nntimony, copper, silver, gold, and zinc.
** Ford said it expected to take about $19.5 billion in charges (tax deductions) as it retreats from the electric vehicle business, a massive hit as the automaker pivots to traditional gas vehicles, along with hybrid and plug-in hybrid models in place of EVs. I think that the hybrid market is here to stay. The EVs aren’t ready for prime time, and the infrastructure isn’t in place to deliver the support they require.
The Animal Farm Returns
I can’t wait to miss this one! Hollyweird has now done to Orwell’s “Animal Farm” what it did recently to “Snow White”, with predictably similar results sure to follow.
“In Orwell’s book, the story warns about totalitarianism, revolutionary corruption, and Stalinist Russia. However, according to Fiction Horizon, the CGI-centered film instead targets capitalism and introduces a billionaire villain (reminiscent of Elon Musk) not present in the book… This cringeworthy trailer suggests a complete perversion of the book. A critique of Stalinist Russia, the betrayal of revolutionary ideals, and how ideological regimes can devolve into totalitarianism appears to have been turned into a—sadly predictable—attack on capitalism.”
Both Andy Serkis (“Gollum”) and Seth Rogan are avowed socialists. So this shouldn’t be a surprise. But it is unsurprisingly appalling.

We do the same thing with inflatables tossed out of the back of Coast Guard C-130s. And droppable out of helos. Though an inflatable isn’t nearly as cool as a fully equipped whaleboat.

And the need is one of the reasons that both the USCG and the USN are looking at Japan’s flying boats. Because flying boats are excellent rescue vehicles for some strange reason.
Welcome back from your Mil’s service, hopefully it went well and there was some closure. It’s always nice to check in with your grandkids.
Without going into details, it was an interesting service. The deceased only started going to the church when her decline was completely evident, so the pastor only saw her personally in the hospital before she shuffled off her mortal coil. One sister arranged for the funeral, so it was all about that one sister. There were about two dozen people from the regular congregation in their last year of life who were there for the free meal and didn’t know the mother-in-law, except for the few times she attended church and insulted them. Even though around a dozen grandchildren were living in the Phoenix Valley, none showed. Three of my four daughters drove from SoCal to be there for MRSLL. The LL nuclear family is very close, and my daughters were fun to have around just because they are. So they represented the grandchildren. None of the 23 great-grandchildren attended.

Some of the weirdness of the service at the church and at the graveside seemed odd, and I took the Baptist pastor aside when it was all over and asked him about it. He shrugged and said That’s the way the domineering sister wanted it – including wheeling an old rugged cross around.
Weathering the storm…all we can do sometimes, then move along back to our preferred normal. As for ‘the daughters’, good on them and you and MrsLL for rearing them properly….being gracious while others around you are unable, is a sign of strength.

It’s easy to read your… concerns… about the rest of the family and their feelings. You and your kids (as best able) were there for MRSLL. That’s the biggest thing. Glad you are back in battery in apparently good condition.
The in-laws had almost no interaction with my children or grandchildren growing up. It’s complicated, broken family and all that. Nobody on the blog cares and I don’t think that airing historical things in the family context is useful. The half-sister who claimed control of the funeral is the youngest. The other siblings are full-blood relatives, and there may come some sort of rapprochement. That has yet to play out.

My situation is no less dysfunctional than that of the four siblings, except that of the four siblings, two have passed, leaving the oldest (me) and the youngest (a sister). I get along okay with my younger sister, but I have never lived a day in the same house with her. Broken home situation on my part, too. But I’ve tried not to do that to my children.

I had a somewhat complicated relationship with my mother because of her propensity to attend family gatherings often as well as insultingly. My wife, on the other hand, as a frequent target of Mother’s negative assessments had no relationship to speak of with her at all. Finally, I just kept them separated and everybody got along a lot better thereafter.
It’s a shame when one domineering person decides to turn such an event like a wedding or a funeral into a performative art experience.

My wife and I would have been very happy to have a court house wedding, but my mother wanted a church wedding, so our quiet moment got hijacked into a glorious clustergrope including mom inviting my ex-girfriend and the ex’s mother to the wedding. Which we didn’t find out until the receiving line at the end of the service.

I am sorry to report that I bought a tub of coconut “yogurt” at my local Kroger store 20 minutes ago. This branch is very proactive about expiration dates and I was pleased to find a tub of Kozy Shack rice pudding with “only” one week to go marked 50% off. (As if that ultra-processed, chemical-ridden stuff could EVER go bad. It prolly has a ‘cidal effect on molds and funguses and bugs. Anyway …) I like rice pudding and am too lazy to make it, so I bought the discounted KS stuff. Unfortunately, right next to the rice pudding was a 50%-off thing of coconut yogurt. Out of morbid curiosity, and because hey! I just saved half the price [1] of the rice pudding, I took the pseudo-yogurt home with me, even though it is by definition an abomination. Have not tried it yet.

Here’s a question. Does anyone know if the “salt water crocodile drug runners” are using two blade (for speed) or 3 blade props (for power) on their lower units? Back in the dark ages (late 50’s) powered my 35hp Mercury with 2 blade for water skiing, etc. and 3 blade for dragging 20 ft. shrimp trawl. Got a larger boat and 50hp 3 blade to pull 40 ft. net.
Watching episodes of ‘To Catch a Smuggler: Tropical Takedown’…seems the bigger transport smuggler dudes (like the header picture) are stacking (4) engines across the back of some ‘barely there’ hull that they’ve cut out the support structure to afford more ‘cargo’ space underneath the center console and bow areas…then racing full bore, at night no less (running no lights of course) across the black water from BVI/USVI or Puerto Rico to the DR like scorched rabbits hell-bent for shore…where they beach the craft, unload, then abandon everything. Thinking they’re running 2-blade props as these things move, and CBP has bigger better gear yet still takes some effort to catch the perp’s and force them to stop (often by shooting out the engines while going 50-60 knots)…who look like Joe Rasta Dude in a ratty t-shirt, board shorts, and flip flops.
[Part of me wants to just let the smugglers continue (the majority that aren’t getting ‘smoked on the water’). But smugglers are also trafficking in people, so there’s that moral dilemma aspect…which needs to be stopped. Often those “migrant” – barely seaworthy – “yolo’s” are slower going and easier to locate and stop. Gotta rescue those folks.
They are probably using stainless steel 4-5 bladed props with a high pitch and rake, like the ones that raceboats use. You can see actual fishing boats with 4-5 mega-outboards on various videos of Haulover Inlet, touted the most dangerous inlet in Florida. And when they come out of the water, it definitely looks like some sort of more-than-3 blades per prop. Each prop costing probably more than the ‘blue-topped legend’ which is a small Boston Whaler that some chick expertly handles far better than many of the multi-million dollar fishing boats are handled.

They were just coming out with 5-bladed props in late 86 for the 250hp Johnson/Evinrudes that were being introduced. Now those engines are considered ‘small’ or ‘mid-sized’ and we have 450hp and 500hp outboards. And boats that mount 4-5 of them (with the outer engines having shorter lower units and the inboard having longer lower units to ensure the props are in the water at the bottom of the hull.)
I’ve seen these things with four 500HP motors on the back. I read somewhere those motors cost 75k each. I wonder what they weigh “in service”. 2000HP should make them pretty quick.
It boggles my mind that there are off-shore center console fishing boats that go 60mph. It’s the same stupidity behind bass boats that go… 60-70mph. Gee, instead of taking an hour or two to get to that hot fishing spot, you get there in 30 minutes to an hour. All while beating yourself to death from wave action.

Yes, I understand that in tournament fishing speed is needed to get to the best spot and stay fishing as long as possible, but for your average schmuck, 30mph is plenty fast, especially since the average boating schmuck doesn’t have the skills to handle faster than that. Yes, they can handle it about 80% of the time, but rough weather, high winds, rip currents, fast tides and currents make boating kind of dangerous for the untrained.

As to the cost of the engines, they’re putting them on 5-10 million dollar ‘fishing boats’ that are more luxurious than cabin cruisers 30 years ago. Friggin Fountains and Donzis and all the others. Can’t go offshore in anything smaller than 50′ with more horsepowers per boat than on an Abram’s tank.

Back in the day, my dad had no problem taking his 20′ Seacraft with a 115hp Mercury out 20-30 miles offshore from Sebastian Inlet. These days that 20′ Seacraft and engine would be laughed at by ‘serious fishermen.’

Okay, the film was written by Nicholas Stoller and directed by Andy Serkis, but I’m going to use lead voice actor Seth Rogen (remember the mean-spirited atrocity of Santa Inc. (2021)?) as the exemplar for this thing they’re claiming is “Animal Farm”. Rogen is an ass, but he is [or his handlers are] not stupid. Angel Studios MUST BE DESTROYED because it is fundamentally inimical [1] to people like Rogen. Now you don’t make someone a martyr if you really want to destroy him. You tempt (or blackmail) him into doing something shameful, something that will make his supporters despise and abandon him. I’m morbidly curious about this “Animal Farm” movie itself, but I’ll bet on two things: 1) the pigs will turn out to be The Real Victims; 2) the selflessly altruistic pigs only intended to improve life for all the other animals, yet those ungrateful animals ended up blaming the totally innocent pigs for everything. Looks like they took the court room part from the original and stretched it into an over dramatic, over acted, full length movie. Comes across as just so much watered down whiskey.

Ford EV Trucks
Dumping that program is a start. Next, strip out all the unneeded electric components in current trucks. Who thought electric parking brakes was a good idea?
On Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, the asking price for thirty year pickups approaches $30,000. What you hope to buy is stove bolt reliability. You can refurbish one to near new condition for one year’s depreciation on a new truck.
My farmer friends tell me many are in the market for older tractors that they can fix themselves.

Recently, I was a passenger in a super equipped SUV. The owner took great pride in showing off all the bells and whistles. Fine, but I just needed my ass transported to a location.
Tractors – from Compact on up – have computer screens for operation, and all manner of electronic do-dads. Helped a neighbor with his new JD, looked like an aircraft with all the switches and buttons and screen…not for me, especially since our first tractor was a 2N bought at auction, then an ’85 Massey, to my favorite, a Case-IH 35hp, great tractor without a pile of electronics. Altho, the Regen burn to ‘save the environment’…another stupid government requirement – didn’t save one thing as it ran for 15 minutes to supposedly burn off the whatevertheheck that is bad for Gaia. Beyond stupid…like DEF…Diesel Extortion Fluid, does nothing but create trash at the pump.
Pres. Trump needs to take whatever steps are necessary to remove DEF from the diesel engine requirement. It’s stupid.
It did help the K-Street driven manufacturer of synthetic cow piss tho. Unbelievable dumbassery…but someone got rich.
I’ve watched a couple of the ‘farm’ video channels on youtube. Having a ‘glass cockpit’ with autosteer and all the metrics tied to display screens (input/output/speed/bushels per and all the other gewgaws and thingamabobs) is almost essential in this modern world.

Map the land with GPS, including elevations and showing waterways and trenches and other obstacles, im;port info into your autosteer system which crossreferences to the seeder or harvester or tile-setting machine (french drains, tiles, it’s all the same) and your sprayers for both fertilizer and insecticide, crossreference to the seed used on the plot of land, and the modern farmer can adjust his/her harvest to the fertility of the land. It’s crazy how high-tech farming has become.
Wonderful when it works. Only dealers can fix it unless you live in a right to repair state. Stops working during harvest and you can lose your crop.

Processing rare earths. Clinton got one of the last ones we had sold off to China long ago. It is a very nasty business so it will be interesting if this new one ever gets off the ground due to the tree hugger resistance. I also wonder which of his friends will benefit from it.

I have been reading the Ford stories following the EV thing. There is a benefit from those who wish to own those rolling blow torches, demand for fuel goes down so our cost goes down.
Gasoline (supplemented by ethanol) is only part of the oil story. I agree that EVs help reduce the price fractionally, but the woke states like California have regular unleaded running close to $6 +/- per gallon and you find more EVs there. Valero (majority owned by Venezuela) is closing its refinery there and taking a multi-billion tax break in the process, and the lack of refining capacity will drive prices up despite what EVs do to the market.

The real question is what OPEC will do longer term. OPEC can control the price on oil (international commodity) by increasing or reducing the supply and there’s not a lot that the US can do about it. I’m sitting on the sidelines with my popcorn waiting to see what Alberta will do. Will they remain in Canada or will they leave?
Vegas and the Cruise Industry have taken serious hits from That Segment of Our Society of Which We Shall Not Name (but you all know what I’m talking about.) Between rampant theft, rampant fights, rampant non-tipping, rampant destruction, any place that hosts That Segment is in trouble.

Vegas, well, it’s a cyclical thing. She’ll contract, changes will be made, she’ll spring back. It’s the way of everything. The only real way to kill Vegas is to deny it water and cheap electricity. Do that and it will dry up.

The town was reasonable when the mob ran it. Neutral territory; don’t mess with them, don’t mess with the tourists, don’t – DO NOT – try to rip off the casinos. Then the accountants, lawyers, and corporations took over, and worked to “maximize profits”. Shit happens. Just like most everything else in this country and for many of the same reasons. One could argue when and why it all started but I keep coming back to when Daddy Bush became the power behind Reagan’s throne. Or perhaps the aftermath of the MGM fire. Or maybe Atlantic City – all about the same time, mid 80s-ish.

Seems that everybody except Tesla is ‘rethinking’ the whole EV mess after the losses. Ford may be the biggest loser, but certainly not the only loser.
I think Tesla will continue to hold market share in EVs, and the other manufacturers will let them have it. I believe that hybrid is the way forward, but you still have a potentially exploding battery in it.
Annnnd in the news….VW is cancelling their I.D. Buzz electric mircobus. From what I’ve read, they’re nice vehicles, but just didn’t sell.
