(Breitbart) A Washington state county sheriff has resisted a bill unanimously passed by the Senate to allow non-citizens to become police officers.

“I have a problem with non-citizens being cops and arresting our citizens in Pierce County. Therefore, according to KIRO-TV, we’re not going to hire non-citizens for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Swank said this week.

The bill, SB5068, was unanimously approved by the state Senate in February. Unsurprisingly, all 30 Democrats voted for it, but in a shocking move, all 19 Senate Republicans also voted “yea.”

The bill would allow anyone “authorized to work in the United States under federal law” to serve in these key law enforcement and public service roles. That would include migrants with limited status and DACA recipients.

Supporters of the bill have said they don’t see any difference between non-citizens serving in the military and serving as police officers, judges, or firefighters. But Swank disagrees with that idea. He said:

There’s a difference between law enforcement and the military. In law enforcement, we arrest people. We take away their constitutional rights. We lock them up in jail. We don’t use our military to do that. They’re defending America, hopefully, in foreign countries and foreign places, right, and here if we need to. So, there’s a big difference.

State legislators also proposed the bill as a way to solve the severe shortage of police officers in the extremely left-wing state, where police officers often feel both unwanted and targeted. But Sheriff Swank finds the argument absurd and says this bill won’t solve the officer shortage issue. Swank said:

The real problem is the reason it’s hard to hire people in Washington State. The state legislature has passed laws in Washington administrative codes that make it very difficult to be an officer here. Cops don’t want to work here when they’re afraid to do something they might be put in prison for it. That’s a big deal.

      2. During a visit to Mount Vernon a few years ago, I encountered a group of Fwenchies being loud and boisterous in front of George and Martha’s tomb. They did not appreciate being told to shush and show some respect (the area is thusly posted, after all) but they did move on posthaste. I’m kinda proud of my lack of manners under those circumstances. Ugly American indeed.

  8. I was trying to read one of the license plates on the string of trailers for the vehicle pulling them. I can’t imagine where that might be legal.
    It turns out:
    No, there are no states that prohibit doubles or triples. All of the lower 48 states, Alaska and Hawaii allow doubles and triples. There are some local ordinances and rules that limit or restrict where trucks with singles, doubles and triples can go, but that’s about it.

For several years I pulled my 19′ foot travel trailer and my 5X8′ cargo trailer by my 2000 Chevy one ton all through the southern states, southwest and middle states, Oregon and Washington and had no problem with law enforcement. Now, both trailers had lights, license plates and electric brakes. I passed local yokels, city cops, state troopers and commercial enforcement and was never stopped. I did stay in the right lane and went at or just under the posted speed limits and besides, I am cute…

      1. Looking at your photo (above), I can see how you charm your way out of tickets.

    2. I should have said I did have a commercial license with a double/triple endorsement for at least half of my John Steinbeck odyssey. I would have not try to pull three trailers like that, for one, it is far overlength and he/she is way over the pick up’s GVWR and there is no brakes on the golf cart or the boat trailer and you have to have brakes on every axle.
