Could the US have purchased Greenland in some deal with Denmark if Pres. Trump had been more deft in his approach. It’s an interesting question, and we may never know the answer, but unlike Canada, a Greenland purchase makes sense for the US and Denmark (which prop up the Greenland government financially). Unlike many VM readers, I’ve been studying Greenland politics closely for some time and think a deal could be made. The Inatsisartut (unicameral legislature) is factionalized, but the labor union representing most workers theoretically could sway enough votes to do whatever is needed.

Just some random thoughts on the subject.

To put someone on “phone duty” in the United States (particularly in a medical facility) who is barely intelligible due to thickness/heaviness of accent is an embarrassment to that person and a waste of time for the caller.
It might have been more productive to conduct the conversation in Spanish rather than having to ask her to repeat continually (I claimed to have a problem hearing).
I swear that airlines select gate agents for their inability to be comprehensible in English. There’ll be three or four people there, and the one that gets on the PA is the one with the worst English.

We might make fun of say a German accent, but we don’t associate it with being stupid. [1]) In contrast, a Mexican accent is treated as comical in Hollywood (unless it’s a narco-theme movie). So is a generic “Asian” accent comical for that matter. Such is the way of the entire world. Swedish Girl spent much of her professional life in Denmark. She labored under not only a Swedish accent, but a Scanian accent at that. So it was like hick “y’all Swedish” on top of being Swedish. Me personally I find Cantonese-speaker English grating. I was listening to some video the other day, narrated by a Cantonese-speaker woman living in Australia. They cut off terminal vowel sounds (in addition to the baseline choppiness) and lengthen some vowels. The narrator was an architect and clearly well educated, buh she sowwwwn lye dis. It hur my ear, make me wan to cryyyyy!
