Hurricane Melissa is now the strongest storm anywhere on the planet this year. Everyone needs to pay attention. She is Category 5 (violent). Max sustained winds of 175+mph. Wind gusts over 200+mph. Central pressure is down to 903! The current location is about 150 miles southwest of Kingston. The storm is moving only 2mph. This is going to be catastrophic. Please continue to keep Jamaica in your thoughts.
It’s a familiar weather pattern, one that is understood in the general sense of ‘weather’. Every hurricane brings out global warming/cooling advocates who would like funding from the public trough.
I am not diminishing the power of hurricanes or their capacity for absolute destruction. I’m only asserting that they are generally predictable in terms of time, place, cause, and effect. They are not the least bit impacted by you mowing your lawn with a gas mower or cooking brats and burgers on the BBQ. On the other side of the planet, they’re called Taiphoons.
For a hurricane to form, there needs to be warm ocean water and moist, humid air. These conditions occur in tropical regions of the world, typically between 5 and 20 degrees north and south of the equator. Preparations are as predictable as the storms. If you are prepared for tidal surges and wind effects, the storm’s effects can be mitigated. If corruption siphons off the funds earmarked for preparations and infrastructure, you get your butt kicked by Mother Nature.
(Huckabee) Last week, the DHS released a 22-page report accusing FEMA of politicizing disaster aid by not speaking to victims of Hurricane Milton if they had Trump campaign signs at their houses. The Trump Administration sent a referral to the DOJ, recommending criminal charges against Biden-era FEMA officials for politicizing emergency funding.
But The Hill newspaper reports that FEMA’s defenders say the incidents were isolated and quickly dealt with, and that the investigators “found just 15 incidents in which personnel referenced President Trump in their work canvassing properties to let owners know they could apply for assistance.”
Our thoughts: If disaster relief were politicized for 15 victims who lost everything in a hurricane, that’s 15 too many, and someone should be held accountable. Beyond that, who’s to say that only the ones who had written notes were affected? If the partisanship was widespread, how many homes with Trump signs were passed over without leaving any written evidence?
The Fed Rate Cut
MRSLL grilled me on it, so I’ll share it here again, too. The Federal Reserve cut the federal funds target range by 25 basis points yesterday to 3.75%–4.00%. The vote was 10–2. Stephen I. Miran dissented in favor of a 50 bp cut, while Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey R. Schmid dissented in favor of no change. Chair Powell also made clear that a December cut is “not a foregone conclusion.”
MRSLL: Why did the 10-year Treasury yield rise right after a rate cut”?
Because the 10-year Treasury Bond isn’t a lever the Fed pulls. It’s a market price, set minute by minute by millions of participants This includes pension funds matching promises, insurers, banks, hedge funds, foreign central banks, corporations, and individual savers. Each vote with real money on growth, inflation, and federal borrowing over the next decade. Today, that collective vote nudged yields higher, with the 10-year hovering near ~4.07% after the press conference. Yes, the Fed trimmed the overnight rate, but the message alongside the cut was basically: don’t necessarily pencil in rapid follow-ups.
Powell’s “not assured” guidance kept the short end tighter than doves hoped. The long end has its own heartbeat: investors see heavy Treasury issuance and ongoing fiscal deficits and demand extra compensation to lock up money for 10 years. In bond-speak, that “term premium” tends to grow when uncertainty about inflation, policy, or supply is high.
Layer on the macro mix: inflation remains modestly elevated versus the pre-2020 norm, while signs of a softening labor market are creeping in. That two-sided risk is the monetary-policy headache. Cut too fast and you risk re-heating prices. Stay too tight for too long and you risk aggravating job softness. When the outlook is that finely balanced, investors demand a bit more yield to own longer bonds, and the 10-year reflects that debate in real time.
One plain-English point that often gets lost: a rising 10-year yield means the global market is bidding less aggressively for U.S. debt. Prices and yields move like a seesaw. If buyers won’t pay as much for a fixed stream of coupons, bond prices fall and yields rise to clear the market. Today’s move is the market saying, “We’ll lend to Washington for ten years, but only at a slightly higher rate.” Put differently, you can have a small cut at the front of the curve while long yields stay sticky or even drift up. Traders call that a “bear steepener,” but you don’t need the jargon: short-term rates aren’t falling as fast as doves hoped, and longer-term rates aren’t following because the crowd still sees persistent inflation risk, heavy Treasury supply, and a delicate labor market the Fed must navigate carefully.
Bottom line for non-bond-geeks: a Fed cut doesn’t automatically make your 10-year-linked borrowing cheaper tomorrow. The 10-year is a market barometer, not a Fed dial, and today that market (millions of diverse entities and individuals) said: slower path to cuts, still-sticky inflation, labor market worth watching, and significant borrowing needs mean we want a bit more yield—translation: lower bond prices, higher rates.

I first encountered this practice in San Diego a couple of years ago. I was with my granddaughters and wanted to buy a backpack to put our beach stuff in before we hit the sand and surf. Check and MAGA
(h/t Claudio) The United States just executed the most significant economic coup in human history.
China controls 80% of rare earth processing—the neurons of every weapon system, smartphone, and AI server on planet Earth. One element: neodymium. Without it, F-35s don’t fly. Teslas don’t move. Data centers go dark.
Trump threatened to destroy $300 billion in Chinese exports with 100% tariffs.
Beijing responded by threatening to choke the global technology supply chain.
Then something impossible happened.
THE 72-HOUR CHECKMATE:
October 24: Malaysia signs mineral pact.
October 25: Thailand signs processing deal.
October 26: Framework announced. China blinks.
Hidden in the fine print: $13 billion in Australian rare-earth processing. Cambodia extraction rights. Japan’s 2010 playbook—which cut Chinese dependency 30%—is now deployed across $350 billion in American AI infrastructure.
THE NUMBER THAT ENDS GLOBALIZATION:
US-China trade: $758B (2018) → $578B (2024)
That $180 billion didn’t vanish. It relocated to nations that bend the knee. ASEAN trade up 20%. Chinese rare earth market share is dropping for the first time in 30 years. American supply chains are rerouting in real time as Beijing realizes the trap.
HERE’S WHAT THEY’RE NOT TELLING YOU:
This isn’t a trade negotiation. It’s a tribute collection.
Trump just converted the world’s largest consumer market from a trade partner into a weapon. Every nation now faces a choice: access to American markets, or access to Chinese supply chains.
Not both. Never again.
The $20 billion soybean freeze—first since 2018—isn’t retaliation. It’s a demonstration. China can inflict pain. America can inflict extinction.
THE PATTERN THAT BROKE REALITY:
Seventeen times since 2018, identical playbook: Announce apocalyptic tariffs—markets crater. China retaliates. Then, exemptions appear for allies. Pressure multiplies on Beijing.
63% of Chinese goods face maximum tariffs.
Allied nations: 4%.
Every “chaotic” threat was a calculated bid. Every “impulsive” tweet moved supply chains. Every “Trade War” headline masked the systematic dismantling of Chinese technological sovereignty.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT:
November 1: Xi meets Trump at APEC.
The deal is already done. Rare earth access for tariff relief. American boots on Asian rare earth facilities. China gets to save face.
America gets the future.
Taiwan, AI dominance, technological independence, and the end of competitive multipolarity—all bundled into a “trade framework” the media will call a truce.
Follow the Money – and What does it mean for the British?
(h/t Claudio) Is Trump’s $550B Japan commitment really a diplomatic breakthrough? Consider where this money was going before, and the picture changes completely.
(1) It’s a signal to global investors: When Japan commits $550 billion to U.S. investments, it’s not just about the money – it’s sending a message to investors worldwide about where the smart money is going. Big institutional investors, such as sovereign wealth funds, closely monitor these government deals. They see them as indicators of future growth. The reality is that capital could have gone anywhere. Before Brexit, a lot of it would have naturally flowed through London. Now it’s going straight to the U.S.
(2) The ripple effect is bigger than most realise: Government deals like this usually attract 3-5x more private investment. So we’re not just talking about $550B, we could be looking at $1.5-2.5 trillion in total money moving toward the U.S.-Asia partnership. Once Japan’s big institutions start putting serious money into U.S. assets, they stick with that strategy for years, not just months.
What does this mean for Old Blighty?
UK funding is becoming more competitive: With less foreign capital entering the UK, its VC and PE funds have less to work with. In practice, Fundraising takes longer, costs more, and scaling internationally becomes trickier for UK startups. The market trend is changing, and investors are now comparing every UK opportunity to what’s available in the U.S. market. It’s just the new reality.
Less demand for sterling typically weakens the pound. At the same time, a stronger dollar (which often happens when the U.S. looks economically strong) makes imports more expensive. For UK companies buying from Asia or the U.S., this creates a double challenge: higher material costs just as funding for growth becomes harder to access.
This is all happening while the Brits are figuring out post-Brexit trade relationships and dealing with some political uncertainty. It’s like watching a major reshuffling of global partnerships while they are still sorting out their position. Not ideal timing.
$550 billion doesn’t just appear—it comes from somewhere and goes somewhere. Every geopolitical move has consequences, and this one will reshape how capital flows for years to come.
Is it better if the British leave the place to the weak-minded, the Muslims, and the sexually dysfunctional and move every potentially profitable business to the US and help MAGA? Even the Church of England has collapsed. It’s a tough decision. Remain, pay high taxes in a failing economy, and circle the drain — along with the stuff that goes down the drain swirling next to you —or relocate your business to a place where you’ll never need to concern yourself with American tariffs again?
From an EU perspective, London’s weakening role as a financial bridge doesn’t only affect the UK. It also limits Europe’s reach into global capital markets. The UK used to amplify Europe’s access and influence; without that link, more capital now seems to be tilting toward the US–Asia/Middle East corridor, excluding Old Europe altogether.
Backfire!
Chuck Schumer is fuming that President Trump is actually doing his job — meeting with world leaders in Asia — while Chuck keeps the government CLOSED.
“Donald Trump is DANCING on the tarmac in Malaysia!” Schumer whined from the statement prepared by his staff.
Chuck: “Five days away. Starting this Saturday, tens of millions of Americans face the specter of financial crisis, all while Donald Trump is dancing on the tarmac in Malaysia. Donald Trump may be having a nice time abroad, but people here at home are dreading—dreading open enrollment. Insurance plans that cost three or four hundred dollars a month will suddenly cost two thousand dollars a month or more, because Republicans prefer to shut down the government rather than work with Democrats to extend the ACA tax credits. Consequently, the average ACA plan is set to more than double—double starting next year. The average 60-year-old couple making $85,000 a year will soon have to pay an extra $22,000 or more to have affordable health insurance.”
Meanwhile, President Trump is securing peace and trade deals in Asia.
Schumer is blocking paychecks and tanking morale at home. He’s already lost the largest federal union, and it’s only getting worse.
Nuclear Arms Race
President Trump ordered the Pentagon to increase nuclear testing ‘immediately’ on Wednesday night – just moments before the US president’s pivotal meeting with Communist Chinese Dictator Xi Jinping.
Pres. Trump explained the military move was necessary to combat Russia and China from closing the gap in the arms race.
‘The United States has more Nuclear Weapons than any other country,’ he began. ‘This was accomplished, including a complete update and renovation of existing weapons, during my First Term in office. Because of the tremendous destructive power, I HATED to do it, but had no choice!’
He added about the arms race: ‘Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within 5 years. Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis,’ he declared. ‘That process will begin immediately.’ The move comes after Putin said on Sunday that Russia had successfully tested its ‘unstoppable’ nuclear-powered cruise missile. Moscow says the weapon, called the ‘Flying Chernobyl,’ can pierce any defense shield, and has ‘unlimited range’.
Asked on Air Force One about the test of the missile, dubbed the SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO, Trump said the United States did not need its nukes to fly so far as it had a nuclear submarine off the coast of Russia. ‘They know we have a nuclear submarine, the greatest in the world, right off their shores, so I mean, [our missile] doesn’t have to go 8,000 miles,’ Trump told reporters, according to an audio file posted by the White House.
‘I don’t think it’s an appropriate thing for Putin to be saying, either, by the way: You ought to get the war ended, the war that should have taken one week is now in… its fourth year, that’s what you ought to do instead of testing missiles.’

The Gates reactor (heavily subsidized by USGOV) Is a next-generation Natrium reactor that uses liquid sodium for cooling. It’s based on a Russian design concept. I don’t know if it’s designed as a “breeder reactor” or simply as an energy generator. I haven’t seen the design specifications. Liquid sodium has a much higher boiling point than light water, for example, allowing the reactor to operate at lower pressures. That means in part that the containment shielding doesn’t need to be as heavy.

This morning, Melissa’s winds are 105mph, which is pretty much “meh” for a hurricane. Category 2. But I was following the storm closely in the run-up to landfall in Jamaica. Winds at 185mph here near Cape Canaveral would probably take down everything within 25 miles of the coast – which is pretty much everything. Including the launch infrastructure on both the Space Force and Kennedy Space Center sides. Yeah, pads 39A (now owned by SpaceX) and 39B were meant to withstand a Saturn V, but that lasted seconds and was pretty much over within a minute. Melissa was 185 and going 3 miles an hour.

You know the greenies will be screaming “global warming!!!” because no matter what happens they’ll do that – unless it happens to be good. Now that the AI insanity is demanding pretty much the entire power grid’s electric power and backing off how dire the situation is, they’re having to face reality.
funny how that low pressure wave lasted two weeks in place while the weather fools, who are quite good at hurricanes, were sure there was zero chance of development. then it suddenly blows up? had nothing to do with all the flights dumping stuff into it 24 hours a day i’m sure….

How many H1B or other visa employees is Amazon sending back, zero?
A September 2025 presidential proclamation mandating a $100,000 fee for new H-1B applications prompted Amazon to advise its existing H-1B employees to remain in the U.S. and return quickly from any international travel… H1B renewals require a new fee. So every year Amazon has to barf up $100K for their H1B holders or ship them back. The recent rift will send some back and eventually, most of them.
I’ve dealt with a few hurricanes. One blew the shingles off my roof, which is an interesting experience when you are inside, hear them “unzip”, and watch them blow across the yard. I ran from Rita, and stayed for Ike, which killed freshwater fish in outfalls over thirty mile from the coast, when the surge came ashore. Both devastated coastal areas, and Ike basically washed away the majority of the Bolivar Peninsula.
Regardless of what people believe, hurricanes can strike anywhere along the coasts of the United States, real estate that can be inflicted by a surge are in danger of being destroyed, and it’s arrogant to believe those that choose to build in those areas should receive special considerations. FEMA feels the same. The help will come after one disaster, but after that, if you can’t afford, or keep, insurance on your investment, you’re on your own. Even with disaster help, the amount granted doesn’t make a dent in the loss. Prime beach real estate becomes something only the most wealthy can afford, and the new structures required to be built to code can withstand a major hurricane.
Insurance, whether for fire or flood/hurricane, has become incredibly expensive. If I didn’t have USAA, it would be difficult fo find an insurer for the White Wolf Mine (in the middle of a pine forest).
I worked in Kingston, on the waterfront.
Met some good people there. I wonder how they’re doing.
I examined different roads, and the construction of houses, in Jamaica on Google. Many have walls of concrete blocks, which to me, indicates an awareness of how such construction can withstand strong winds if constructed correctly. A photo I saw on a news report shows a home made of concrete blocks in the area where the hurricane came ashore. The roof is damaged, but the walls look untouched. A building constructed of wood framing was demolished.
I think the biggest problem people in Jamaica will face in the near future will be food, and water. That, and the lack of electricity will lead to a huge drop in good medical care. Just navigating through the debris will be a daunting task.
“nuclear-powered cruise missile.” I’m still trying to see how that works.
So the pile heats up the boiler and the steam generated spins the propeller? Or is it high enough pressure to provide thrust?
Nuclear reactor pile directly heats atmosphere coming through the intake. Think of it as a ramjet engine, but a nuclear pellet heat source instead of fuel/air ignition driving the exhaust.
We did it a long time ago but discarded it as an ecological disaster, scattering a very radioactive trail across the landscape even in the 1960s just didn’t sound good: Project Pluto. https://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/pluto/

Wonder how the “green weenies” would feel knowing that their Coors Beer contributed to various EEVIL NUKLEAR PROJEKS
Hmmmm. Comment disappeared. I’ll trim it and try again.
Look up Project Pluto, Coors Ceramic (CoorsTek), and Y-12 for starters.
The reactor directly heats up incoming air, which expands out the exhaust, driving the missile (not a rocket – no onboard oxygen supply) forward. A ramjet engine where the fuel/air combustion chamber is replaced with a nuclear reactor. Very messy for the folks under the path of the missile.
Thanks. I had no idea (as usual).
The Great Reset. I’m not sure this is what they meant. :)

Do you think Russia has yet to have gone “full scale” (a term western media came up with) in their SMO in Ukraine ? You lean heavily (L.L.) on ISW as a source (V. Nuland-Kagan) , pick your (poison) news source I guess… . Even if the R.F. gets their 4 or 5 Oblasts to include whatever the f else they want , any cease fire zone/buffer will continually be plagued by the same nationalist / neo nazi types , Azov, Svoboda, Right Sector , Bos’n Boys.. (the real Bucha Massacre bad boys ) who are committed to killing ethnic Russians . As far as the E.U. having a combined all star team of the willing sitting on the bench, that’s about a fucking joke unless they conscript their ever growing number of immigrants . 100.00 bucks says Russia takes what they want , unless nukes start flying over this , then the bet is off. “Fight to the last Ukrainian” , it is a bold battle cry, but a piss poor battle plan . Breadbasket of Europe (Moldova flying the E.U. Flag more or less) , yeah okay…. I know Putin is trying to get the band back together , and wants to absorb Europe (BS) , like Russia needs the constantly broke failing immigrant infested cluster of confused nations or more real estate .
You once said , “letter rip ” on your blog …so I did , that’s how I see it . Trump says “this is Biden’s war “, well he took the head coach job , and this isn’t last years season , don’t complain about last years coach . This Ukraine is “his war” now , and despite his promises , he ain’t walking away and I wish he would . This Trump’s War . Trump reminds me of the wealthy N.Dallas kids I grew up with , who were never told “No” , and I voted for him three times. Just a shitty deal to be involved in , Ukraine . Best Regards, Boats !
I think that ISW is biased. It’s challenging to come up with a clear picture of that war that isn’t heavily propagandized. I select pieces for the blog often in the hopes that people will challenge them and generate discussions to hash things out from different points of view. VM isn’t my propaganda platform, though sometimes it might seem that way.
.
Yes, it’s now Trump’s War. I don’t know what I’d do if I was the boss. I’d hope that I could get more clarity in the big chair than I glean here and there from the armchair quarterback position but I’m not sure that CIA or the IC are being forthright. They too have a heavy bias. – LL
I agree on every source is propagandized concerning Ukraine . Just pick one , none of the sources for or against is without bias . It just boggles my mind that the U.S. hasn’t just bailed out of the mess . There are so many politicians and policy makers that won’t drop it , so much so that I don’t believe there is an ounce of altruism in their support . I have been following along and digging into Ukraine for about a decade and it is murky . I truly think Zelensky is out of his mind, high on drugs , power , and money . I’ve said it before , if we are still in the nation building business through the use of our intelligence and diplomatic channels and who knows what else , we need to find a way to put Yulia Timoshenko in the seat of power . It’s just my gut hunch that she is up to the task of dealing with the all the influences internal and external trying to get their claws into Ukraine . She’s popular, smart , not too old , and has already made her fortune and I believe she would best serve the interests of the Ukrainian people . She may not want the job , but she’d be good at it . Ukraine should be moving and grooving on their own two feet , they just need to be left alone to determine their own post soviet fate . The U.S. and the E.U. are just fucking things up to the detriment of the Ukrainian people and world peace.
This is a great and far ranging post. An Avro Lincoln(?), supply chains, tariffs, Schumer and possibly DAARPA messing up Jamaica. Excellent, but what about the degenerate formerly known as Prince Andrew?
