(h/t Claudio) Israel will be mapping out injuries, hospital admissions, social media posts, electronic communications, news footage, and medical records, linking them all to people who had these pagers today. Forget the injuries and deaths; Israel just created a massive and growing trove of information about both known and previously unknown Hezbollah militants, as well as their supporters, partners, friends, family members, colleagues, workplaces, vehicles, and homes. They just created an incredibly dense and *up-to-date* social graph of an entire terrorist network across Lebanon as well as neighboring countries. It is incredible what they just did. I’m over 70 so I love your idea of not having to pay property taxes. My kids are long gone from the local schools, after all. Of course I do kind of like my town having police and fire departments, and keeping the streets repaired, and providing me with water and sewer facilities, etc. etc. I guess I’ll just adopt the attitude that other people should pay for all the services I benefit from (maybe I’m turning into a Democrat).
It depends how other services are bundled. Every jurisdiction has a different mechanism for taxation and how services are paid for. Some use sales tax, some excise taxes, some property tax. Sometimes local income tax. I think that my point is that the government shouldn’t have the power to take your property for unpaid taxes if you’re 70+

Incorrect economics theory leads to bad policy. A monopoly is like a patent, where a legislature declares no one may compete with the provider the legislature picked. The only thing that disciplines poor performance is competition, thus monopolies always produce bad service and high prices. There is no exception to this for roads, firefighters, police, courts, armies, water, sewer, electricity, phone, TV, data, schools, healthcare, insurance, etc.
Kudos to whoever engineered the pager scheme. The next day, on a smaller scale, two way radios exploded. Some were at funerals for those killed the previous day. As other comments indicate, the Chinese can probably do it to us whenever they choose.

about taxes: I’m in full agreement – and the rationale as well; in fact been thinking about the problem quite while: how does the locale pay for equipment/support the fire fighters and EMT?
public education system: is producing little to nothing of value currently. when an industry/job/profession no longer produces anything of value, it disappears (I can’t help but being reminded of the guy on Jerome Ave in the early ’40s in a horse-drawn cart with a huge block of ice in the bed.)
police: I’m not certain that I wish to give/support that power to a number of armed individuals whose concepts of right vs. wrong no longer align with mine (or, for that matter, with the church’/the people who believe in G-d and that a healthy society must be run on the concepts behind the Ten Commandments). I am reminded of the actions of the police (all over) during the COVID sham/scam.
library: as much as I am one of the most vociferous proponents of hard-covered paper books, I must admit that I am one of a dying breed: my children, in their late 40s and 50s, read screens (both computers and [mostly] Kindles): I find I am unable to enjoy any story longer than a 3-page short if I am unable to read it on paper. why are we supporting libraries: museums I can understand, but libraries? useful only for the dodos.

As I responded to Fishlaw, the problem is both the Deep State (permanent Washington DC establishment) and the vast, almost unimaginable national debt that requires vast interest payments. Even if we wanted to reduce taxes to 30% total, all inclusive, how do we cope with the debt. I haven’t even mentioned entitlements which — people feel entitled to and will vote to keep — in a Republic or a Democracy. A Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget won’t ever pass because we’re past that tipping point. We have a brain dead president and a whore running to replace him. My sense of humor (and weltanschauung) is strongly modified/twisted due to my astigmatic/wry eye/vision. I keep watching “The Eggless Omelet”; I don’t think I’ve seen anything so funny in many years. I don’t mean funny in a deep-belly-laugh or sexually perverted way (a female doing a male’s job and, after screwing it up royally, crowing about how well she’d accomplished the necessary to the world at large: to explain my use of the term), but funny in that it explains so much of the world today. Much of the intelligent world is trying (with all their might) to explain to those of limited intelligence/eyesight.
As an example of this perverted (I can find no other adjective that fully explains the phenomenon) logic: the Gazans still believe that their October 7th strike was the greatest possible coup of all times against the people they consider to be the invaders of their claimed land.
Unless I’m totally misreading the view of Christians and the nominally Christian (those who call themselves a/irreligious, but feel uncomfortable during any religiious service not nominally devoted to Christ), they are no longer as forgiving of adherents to Islam as they were, say a year ago. They no longer view these people as “quite human, though worshipping at a different church”. By taking (and making available for the world to see) videos of their obscene rape and murder of women and children; not to mention the increasing murder and rape crime statistics by the Islamic invaders in their own countries, as well as the need to accept/convert to a foreign culture and religion, it appears to have clicked off the “humanistic approach” switch – perhaps thoroughout all of Christian Europe.
I think that the world in general is tiring of scam epidemics, Muslim radicals, and wokeness. Islam is a political religion to a much greater sense than Christianity is even though there are segments in America to whom dogma (rather than kindness) has a powerful appeal. Palestinians through the Arab and Persian world are lensed as cockroaches that nobody wants moving into the neighborhood. The people themselves have been subjected to powerful social and cultural conditioning over decades that has made them odious. The same can be said for the Muslim immigrants to Europe who were accorded vast latitude and chose to remain savage.
Anything that gets Christians (and maybe Europeans more generally) to view adherents of another Abrahamic religion as “not quite human” sounds like the prelude to Not Good Things, yeah? Or maybe not a prelude but rather the refrain coming around again. Any road, anyone who thinks it’s a “win” is not looking at the bigger picture.

What we really need is a cap on total taxation. Say 30% of your earned income, in toto (can’t do italics for some reason). 15% to the feds, 10% to the state 5% to the locals. AND NO OTHER TAXES OR FEES DISGUISED AS TAXES. No property tax, no sales tax, no gas tax; your car registration is good for as long as you own it so you don’t have to renew it; fee for launching your boat reflects the actual cost of operarting the boat landing; state park sticker reflects the actual cost of operating the parks, etc. Make the government prove that fees for licenses and permits represent the actual cost of the service rendered.
Require a balanced budget–no deficit spending. If the government runs out of money, presidents, governors, legislators and bureaucrats don’t get paid. Force them to make the hard choices just like you do with your family.
The English kngs lost control when they gave parliament the power to levy taxes. So we limit government power by limiting the power to tax.
