Red Letter Bible – Sermonette
I received a red-letter Bible with words attributed to Jesus Christ printed in red. Given the dates of New Testament books, none of the authors encountered the living Jesus, so how can one claim those were the precise words spoken by the living Jesus? While I understand there may have been some collections of Jesus’ sayings now lost to history, wouldn’t there be many copies of such a resource, perhaps held by many churches? What is the likelihood that every single one was lost? Then again, factions often destroyed things outside the canon in the intervening years, so we don’t know.
The thoughtful gift, gratefully received, has meaning in and of itself, but the red printing is a bit presumptuous to me.

I do not see it as being presumptous. If we are talking about a God that made the universe, that extends beyond the measurement of our best minds and their best instruments, then it would have been easy to inspire the writers of the New Testament to have the actual words of Jesus.

I believe that Matthew and John’s gospels contain valid quotes of Jesus. They are named among the 12 Apostles. If THEE originals were available maybe dating their writings could be accurate. I’m not a scholar. I’m surprised with you’re reference to ” 2nd generation ” authorship such as Polycarp ect.. who were disciples of the Apostles. We do have evidence from the dead sea scroll of Isaiah that after nearly 2 millenia that most of the text is very accurate minus grammatical errors. Other discrepancies cannot be denied but are often explained by some good teachers. One example is the variation of order of 3 temptations in the wilderness listed in 2 of the gospel accounts. Missing the lesson that applies to us by disputing why 2 different men wrote it in different orders is our own loss. Jesus was tempted just like we are and said no and didn’t sin. He was tempted as a man. He resisted by quoting scripture. I.E. proclaiming obedience to proper as authority.
Modern translation scholars have taken a great liberty that is grievous to see.
