Employers often cooperate with their military-age employees when the police or military recovery teams come looking for men to mobilize into the army. Russian men know that military service is a virtual death sentence. You can bribe your way into a non-combat job if you have the money. The Russian economy is a mess, and few families can afford bribes.
In desperation, the government is seeking to mobilize over 100,000 men in prisons. The convicts are granted pardons, freed, and join the military. If they desert, the pardon is revoked, and warrants are issued for the arrest of the reluctant and faithless soldiers. Popular attitudes towards the use of pardons to get criminals to serve in the military are horrifying to parents of men with no criminal record. The pardoned criminals are seen as unreliable and dangerous to their fellow soldiers.
The military’s situation is desperate as the number of men willing to fight dwindles. This is not a new problem, in 2023 there was growing opposition to conscription and voluntary enlistment. This has led to lowering the standards of those mobilized into the military. The standards could only be reduced so far before the number of partially fit men now subject to conscription or mobilization into the military reaches the point where the unfit outnumber the fit, and the medical expenses for the partially fit men become more than Russia can afford. Typically, men with HIV, COVID-19, poor vision, diabetes, cancer, and susceptibility to strokes were not taken into the military. Then they were, and that meant more medical expenses for the military and problems finding helpful work for the partially fit in the armed forces.

History demonstrates that Central Planning tends to vector government power towards coercing society into reflecting the peculiar utopian groupthink that the Central Planners fancy. A fundamental reason is that the interests and reward schemes for a significant, permanent, unionized, administrative state dense with power but diluted accountability fundamentally differ from the citizenry’s private sphere.
While all governments and bureaucracies will have their inevitable human shortcomings, centralizing such power magnifies the core weakness: When you spend capital while having no personal financial risk and no profit metric, you will do less efficiently/wisely than if otherwise were the case (always and everywhere) It’s an unfortunate reality that one can not get around this in designing of a government for a complex society.
But reflecting on why this inefficiency is unavoidable hopefully reminds us of how important it is to strive to keep the federal government as small as possible relative to other states. DC can’t be eliminated but can be put on a firmer leash.
Politicians operate within a system where their primary goal is re-election rather than efficient governance. This creates several misaligned incentives. Politicians frequently prioritize visible, short-term projects that bolster their electoral appeal over long-term investments that may not yield immediate benefits. Infrastructure projects, for example, might be prioritized based on political visibility rather than public needs.
Politicians often cater to powerful interest groups, including large public-sector unions, to secure campaign funding and votes. These groups advocate for increased wages, benefits, and job security for their members, often at the expense of broader public interests such as fiscal sustainability. I do not, usually, comment on United States politics because, not being a United States citizen I do not have a dog in the fight. Please pardon my ignorance gentlemen and ladies (I put gentlemen first because most of the readership/commentatorship are men) but I have a question to your good selves, particularly the regular commentators.
I note the current makeup of the Senate, following the November elections, is Republicans 53 seats, Democrats 47 seats and two independents. From the media it appears Vice President Vance had to cast the deciding vote to confirm Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defence. This indicates the Senate was split 50 votes for and 50 votes against confirming him. If one takes it that all 47 Democrats, plus the 2 independents, voted against, although this might not necessarily be so, then 1 Republican also had to have voted against him. As I say, this breakdown might not necessarily be so, and there might well be some Democrats or independents who voted for, in which case more than one Republican would have had to have voted against.
My question is who is/are these Republicans and what is his/her or their likely future to attempt to, or to deliberately cause damage to, the current administration of President Trump and the possible future in four years, of eight years of President Vance? Likewise, what sanctions are likely to be imposed upon them for their apparent disloyalty in supporting the Democrats.

I have given it some thought but a major problem is that there are still too many people who would rate a mention, particularly those who would be mentioned adversely, who are still alive. Even with their names changed those involved in some of the events would certainly recognise themselves, as would anyone who knew them. Not sure how many more runs around the sun I have, as I will be 81 this coming June, but will continue to consider it – in fact I might draft out some broad outlines which I can fine tune at a later date (if I continue to have one).

There ended up being 3 Republican Senators voted against Mr. Hegseth: McConnell of KY, Collins of ME, and Murkowski of AK.
There are 45 Democrats, 53 Republicans, and 2 Independants who caucus withe the Democrats.
Rarely are the repercussions against sitting Senators. There have been attempts to remove a Senator during a primary. In the primary, another individual of the same political party runs against the Senator.
Murkowski of Alaska lost her primary in 2010 but pulled some shenanigans and won the general election. She pushed a system called Rank Choice Voting. It essentially allows her to win every 6 year term.
In November, Alaska tried to vote out the system but it failed…

Politics… sometimes our politicians due to where they live, if they lived anywhere else, would be a member of the opposite party. Hence, they end up voting in unexpected ways. Others simply don’t care what their constituents want and vote against their constituents desires. And of course, others are compromised in some manner, owe favors, so on, and vote poorly. Getting elected takes money, and political connections. Hence, they do as others tell them. Lastly, sometimes they don’t vote at all, are not present to vote, or are present but abstain. Moral… the vote counts don’t always add up.
While PDJT was exceptionally gracious and…human (unlike the prior Admin)…during his 2nd visit to North Carolina (imagine their plight and being ignored…I’da been a bit more…how should I say this….East Coast when given the microphone)…Trump was a few notches better at that LA “round table” (who thought they could run over him), giving a master schooling class with those do-nothings on how to get things done. Bass is done. The Fire “Kristen’s” are done. Same goes for any other “official” who thinks they have a say what people do with/on their property. Done. Government overreach was on full display last night. Thing is Trump never lost his cool…he was forcefully negotiating…and beat them back with the velvet sledgehammer he knows how to wield with precision. He builds things…well. These fools build nothing except their off-shore accounts.

If some county “official” told me I couldn’t clear my land if – God forbid – a fire trashed the place, they’d see my East Coast side in half a heartbeat. It’s my land, not theirs.

PDJT: “I was told by six different officials the same thing, that property owners can’t get started in 18 months, and they need all sorts of permits, EIS and hazardous waste, building…and they can’t clean up themselves. That’s ridiculous. You need to fix that…people need to start now.”
Bass: “That’s not true.”
PDJT: “It is true, they all told me it was. These homeowners shouldn’t have to wait around 18 months while bureaucrats delay their rebuilding for five times the price. No permits!… or EIS’s, or hazard waste permits. What’s hazard waste anyway?…it’s burned by a fire you people allowed to happen because…no water. So remove all obstacles and allow them to build whatever they want, taller ceilings, bigger home…anything…it’s their property. Make it happen.”
Bass: “We’ve decided they can go back in a week.” (tone-deafness on steroids from that one..who thinks she’s all that and a bag of chips)
PDJT: “That’s too long…these people don’t have a week…a week is too long…they are ready to start tonight.”
– He had to explain this to her and the others half a dozen times like they just couldn’t past their self-importance. But We The People saw it, and get it. These well-paid do-nothings are finished…or should be.
The real question is, will Bass et al do what they promised Our President? Nope…because they can’t help themselves.
He could arrest the fire lesbians, the mayor, and Newsom, all for failing to warn everyone about that dangerous toxic chemical filled smoke. The fine them for “acid rain” from the fallout and maybe dream up a few others lefty type crimes to make sure the underlings got the message.
I gotta say, I was shocked on my last stay in Ontario, Canada.
