Early and Often

I have lived in Arizona for six years and have voted there where I was registered, lawfully.

I have not voted in California and have not registered there because I am not a California resident, yet I received a ballot. I have no way of knowing how many ballots were mailed to places in California where I have lived, nor if people who lived there voted those ballots. To my knowledge, I only received one California ballot this election cycle, though, in past years, I received as many as four California ballots since mail was forwarded to me.

** British newspapers are endorsing Kamala Harris for president. Fools rush in where Jeff Bezos and 200 or so Gannett newspapers fear to tread. However, the endorsers live in England, which has no Electoral College votes, thanks to George Washington, the American Continental Army and Militia, and their French allies.

** The Pearl clutching and lack of awareness of the American Zeitgeist combine for a delicious primal scream.

I have no doubt when Hillary made her “basket of deplorables” comment or wondered why she wasn’t up 50 points, Pres. Trump was like, “I know, right?!?” Leave your East Coast Bubble. It’s a big world out there.

Suppose the donkeys hadn’t stolen the election last time and had gracefully accepted President Trump’s victory over Pedo Joe. In that case, he’d be finishing his second term instead of returning with a Republican majority in both houses of Congress. Sometimes, when you spit into the wind, it comes back and smacks you in the face.

Remember the Fort Hood Massacre

Nov 5 this year is the 15th anniversary of the killing of 13 Americans and one unborn American child at Fort Hood by an Islamic terrorist. An additional 32 people were injured.

The terrorist, Major Nidal Hasan, was arraigned by a military court on July 20, 2011. He was found guilty on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder on August 23, 2013, and was sentenced to death on August 28, 2013.

Days after the shooting, reports in the media revealed that a Joint Terrorism Task Force had been aware of a series of e-mails between Hasan and the Yemen-based Imam Anwar al-Awlaki, who the NSA had monitored as a security threat, and that Hasan’s colleagues had been aware of his increasing Islamic radicalization for several years. The failure to prevent the shooting led the Defense Department and the FBI to commission investigations and Congress to hold hearings.

The U.S. government declined requests from survivors and family members of the slain to categorize the Fort Hood shooting as an act of terrorism or motivated by militant Islamic religious convictions.

Once, while presenting what was supposed to be a medical lecture to other psychiatrists, Hasan talked about Islam and said that, according to the Quran, non-believers would be sent to hell, decapitated, set on fire, and have burning oil poured down their throats. A Muslim psychiatrist in the audience raised his hand and challenged Hasan’s claims. According to the Associated Press, Hasan’s lecture also “justified suicide bombings”. After completing his programs in the summer of 2009, he was transferred to Fort Hood.

He received the death penalty from a military court but is still awaiting the imposition of his sentence. Justice delayed is justice denied.

The aircraft was designed to meet the 1920 British Specification 2/20 for a heavy long-range day and night bomber. The specification required a range of 500 miles (800 km) and a bombload of 2,000 lb (900 kg). It’s another of those aircraft produced between WW1 and WW2 that was never ready for primetime. As with other aircraft, lessons learned were applied to future aircraft that saw action.

    A site that emails me jobs / contracts that need a security clearance has started looking for trainee nuclear submarine officers and technicians for Australian Navy.

    Speaking to a friend on Sunday and a cousin who both have sons in the navy and both were submariners they have NO idea when we might even see the first boat. Both want to go back to subs if we get them soon but are thinking their 20 years will be done.

    Any news from your side of the Pacific?

    1. The production times are slow. If Pres Trump returns to office that could change. I’ll post what I learn on the blog.

      1. Australia is building nuclear-powered submarines in Adelaide, South Australia as part of the AUKUS agreement. People will have to be brought up to speed as they are being built.

        1. COB would know better than I do, but we’re giving the RAN 688 Class submarines before construction completion. After officer/enlisted selection, there is Nuclear Power School (NPS), a 24-week course that teaches the theoretical and practical aspects of nuclear power plant design and operation at Goose Creek, South Carolina. Following graduation, there is another six-month training program at a Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU). Usually, there is a break between the two courses. Then I’d expect they’d ride on a US boat for at least two patrols (break in between), so figure another year and a half of on-the-job training. Nonnuclear power submarine officers have an intense training program while deployed on a boat, and they don’t all make the grade. So there’s that too.

          With Chairman Xi’s One Road Vision failing and trillions of dollars wasted, the popular theory is that hoards will pour out of China to conquer. 2027 is the 100th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army. Maybe they’ll try to demolish Taiwan to prove a point. Maybe they can do it without the use of nuclear weapons (somewhere in the combat theater), without engaging the US, ROK, or Japanese navies (and AUS submarines) at sea, and without allied nations deciding to sink their merchant fleet on the high seas. They have avoided direct confrontations with the great navies so far. The Philippines is fast becoming an unsinkable US Aircraft Carrier and Guam is receiving missile defense systems that could be accelerated during a Trump administration.

    2. Good luck with that. My granddaughter’s significant other is assigned to the SSBN Pennsylvania sitting dockside in Bremerton, WA awaiting spare parts. Built 25 years ago, cannot be deployed because of no diving certification.

  4. Headed to the voting precinct for 7am startup. MRS is the precinct chair and I got drafted as a poll worker. Not a big deal. We set everything up yesterday. Small TX county and over 50% of the residents have already voted so today is a social reunion. The only dems in this part of the county wear masks when they show up so it’s easy to spot the 4 of them.

      1. I went out to fill the gas cans today, and I saw several people wearing their Masks of Obedience. I guess they just don’t get it…..

    2. Early voting in our Central Texas county is a social event too. All of the MAGA types are visiting, laughing and having a good time. We have more than 4 ‘crats but they don’t talk to anyone in line and have a pissed scowl.

    1. me too. and i’m shocked the grid is still up. some years we get up early, go vote then go to a sit down breakfast. other years we wait until dinner time and go out to eat after voting. this year we’re staying home and wondering if it’s the end of the world, or just the end of the country. i wonder if this is how it felt on april 18th 1775, or 1860, or in germany 1939? imagine the founders, about to take on the most powerful military machine in the world. what balls!

            Not listening much today, will wait until much, much, later to see how things are shaping up. The chatter today is just that, chatter.     Brave man. Probably the only person who could challenge Hasan and not automatically be struggle-sessioned afterwards. I don’t know about the military medicine community, but Academic Medicine is thoroughly pozzed with leftist ideology. (Private practice is somewhat less hard left, as a rule.)

    Persons have been driven out of practice, accused of heinous crimes (literal felonies) they didn’t do, over ideological/political issues. I have stories about hardball tactics, smear campaigns of the sort in bad political thrillers, at major academic centers, but they’re not mine to share in detail. The thing that I found most upsetting wasn’t that such underhanded tactics were pulled, but that people you’d think were powerful, who knew the accusations were entirely false, were afraid to speak up on behalf of the (falsely) accused.

      1. Which as a result of what Mike_C mentions will leave American’s in a tough spot in a decade with grinning idiots with medical licenses who have no clue what medicine means. Same story with veterinarians…DVM [She/Her-He/Him now]…wait until they have to sew up a horse out on the north 40 during a snow storm with the rancher handling…wokeness disappears in a heartbeat or you’ll never get hired out on a FarmCall again, word gets around quick.

        1. This ideology-driven destruction of medicine does not necessarily select for grinning idiots. (Yes, it happens, but it’s not inevitable.) What it does however do is it keeps a significant fraction of the population (and worse, the doer and “unpleasant truth over comforting lie” types) out of the field. Which creates a “need” for more foreign medical grads. Which unfortunately does not mean Germans, and Danes and Finns or Australians. Or even Poles and Romanians. It means people from India, Pakistan, Iran, Nigeria, and so forth. I could write pages about why this is undesirable, for philosophical and ideological reasons, and maybe even more pages based on personal experience. (Are there good ones? Yes, of course. But there are a LOT of bad ones. They aren’t stupid. That’s not the problem. It’s cultural on several fronts.)

      I’ve seen a lot of false accusations, from our side, that were so wrong sounding that I had to check.
      I didn’t bother checking those of the other side.

  10. Raccoons-Born in the Southeast Texas swamp, grew up eating things and parts of animals that a lot of people would rather avoid. When I was a young teenager, my Uncle cooked raccoon. Not a bad taste and had a lot of fat, but made an excellent gravy. I do avoid Mountain Oysters, although we raised cattle and practiced bovine psychology by changing the focus of bull calves from “ass to grass”. Taiwanese introduced me to sea cucumber, which is one other item I don’t care for.

    1. As a boy, I doc-ed sheep and cattle. Mostly sheep. The old timers bit the testicles off and spit them. I used the elastic band.

      1. We cut cattle because that was before the band and pliers were developed/popular. But later when raising goats, and selling show wethers, banding made the belly more smooth and attractive in the show ring.

    speaking with some people today (my SIL and several of the usual leftists around the condo who will speak with me) who freely admitted they voted for HairyAss, the consensus is not that she is pro-abortion , but that she promotes and advocates the idea that (in summary) “a woman’s body is her own and what she does with it cannot be dictatated by the state”
    In sum total, this appears to be the Camel’s entire appeal to this well-educated, moderately wealthy (as well as quite mouthy and horribly myopic) segment of the population; not her foreign policy, not her domestic policy, not her fiscal policy.
    These (typically liberal) Kamala-voters are ~85% women and the remainder are the prancing ninnies who are usually seen with their upper torso at a right angles to their legs (usually complaining of lower back pain).
    At this rate, even with the steal, The Donald should be a run-away favorite garnering ~75% of the vote.
    Problem is: not every voter will vote down the Republican/Conservative side of the ticket and not every Republican in Congress will help promote The Donald’s policies; all depends which group/country helped get them elected/gave them money.

  13. raccoon isn’t a bad meat: better-tasting, not as tough, and there’s more of it than squirrel, though IMHO, typically gamey (also called robust, depending on diet) and just as fatty (which I call “greasy”) as bear and not with that underlying hint of ?sweetness (I don’t what else to call it; I don’t find it in beef, pork, lamb or venison).

    It’s not so much “growing old” as it’s systems failure: some of them catastrophically when required at the worst of times, some of them so glacially it requires others to point it out.
    Some begin by forgetting names, places, dates; some will notice decreased muscle strength; some by inexplicable loss of balance; some by lower range scores; quite a few of of us by increased trips to the ophthalmologist or otolaryngologist (for hearing loss as determined by our spouse)
    But systems failure it is!
    If your wish is to mature, expect it. Yes! you can fight it, in numerous ways, but it’s gonna happen: I promise you.
    Unless it’s total catastrophic in which case you won’t care.

    We dropped our ballots off the other day at the courthouse. No fuss, no muss, but it took a while reading through and researching some of the candidates. There are currently 3 “judges” on the Colorado Supreme Court that got caught awarding contracts for favors, and misappropriation of funds. They got a NO vote to retain them.

  17. Re Conspiracy Theory: I blame it all on Harrison Ford, it was all his fault. It was a crate full of sand that was hauled into the bowels of the warehouse. The Ark was smuggled to Tatooine, intended for the Hutt clan. The Jawas were entrusted to hold the Ark pending payment but found another buyer. Jabba insisted the Han Solo repay what the Ark was sold for. Solo never was able to get the money from the Jawas before their mobile home/transporter was destroyed with all hands on board.
