I thought these were the epitome of a WWII fighter, and then that hussy of a P-51D came along…..
I'd been surprised to find out that the shark's mouth nose art wasn't original to the Flying Tigers. They'd copied it from am RAF unit in North Africa that was using it, and they in turn had copied the idea from a Luftwaffe unit: Zerstörergeschwader 76.
Great plane.
The AVG learned how to take advantage of the strengths of the plane and managed to run up an impressive kill rate.
