I like this post a lot, partly because it shows legionaries from late antiquity.
Belisarius, I think, reconquered much of Italy from the Goths with around 5000 of those soldiers, which says something about them or the weakness of the Goths. Murky but fascinating with it.

Depending on the time period I guess the people are in front of the spearheads. Politicians seem to prefer that.
Yes, better to keep the masses on the business ends of the spearpoints. Of course that's not how Rome began, but it's clearly how the republic ended up.
