The lava flow, blood red under a crackling black crust, sounded like a cascading waterfall of breaking glass as it moved with an inexorable, impetus, a flaming river that pushed with a pulse initiated nine miles below the Earth’s surface. This was not the explosive volcanic force that erupted to consume all around it. The vent, opened by a small earthquake and subtle shift in tectonic plates riding on the magma like ships on a molten ocean, eternally grinding over, under, and adjacent to each other. It presented as a small mouth on a rocky ridge, indistinguishable from any other feature on the ridge or any neighboring ridge, without portending what pushed up from below.

It had been prophesied to be retold by countless skalds that Loki, who had been bound eons previously, would slip his bonds at the onset of Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and their final destiny, to encounter the god Heimdallr and it would end in mutual destruction, causing the end of days. That’s what the skalds wrote, but what did they truly know of what bound Loki, what could release him, or what that would mean to the Earth (Midgard) where men dwelt?

Loki’s Fire

Loki’s Fire: Five years have passed since the Norse Goddess Eir appeared in the red mist of the erupting Bárðarbunga volcano.  Very little has been heard from her since she vanished from the safe house in Herefordshire, England.

The effect of neutrino research in China still results in volcanic eruptions, halting the planned forced expansion of the People’s Republic of China out of fear of forces that they don’t fully understand. However, they’re making moves to remedy that situation through the recruitments of assets that can get them what they want. The Long March has been delayed, but can never be stopped.

In the Manila underworld, where nobody is quite who they seem to be, Mike Vega is working as an arms merchant against Chinese interests and is removing meddlesome people in favor of those same interests.

French/Korean Sylvie Kim, working as an agent of the Chinese Fourth Bureau of Guojia Anquan Bu in The Philippines, has a mission too, and that mission is Mike Vega.

Ilya Sergeivich Zavrazhin an upwardly mobile operative of the Russian SVR is under orders to beat everyone to the punch.

It is a land of chameleons embracing each other where the laws of cause and effect are confusing and the outcome is far from predictable and none of the actors have any genuine belief in Norse deities returned to Earth or in Loki’s Fire. But that’s about to change.

The Government Loves You

And when we’re talking about spending your hard-earned money, it’s always helpful when government intervenes isn’t it? …more here

The Bank of England has called on ministers to decide whether a central bank digital currency should be “programmable”, ultimately giving the issuer control over how it is spent by the recipient.

“There could be some socially beneficial outcomes from that, preventing activity which is seen to be socially harmful in some way. But at the same time, it could be a restriction on people’s freedoms.”

A digital currency could make payments faster, cheaper and safer, but also opens up new technological possibilities, including programming: effectively allowing a party in a transaction, such as the state or an employer, to control how the money is spent by the recipient.

    • Imagine if people from another world traveled to Earth with technology that surpassed understanding. What would it look like and feel like? I expect that it would be a lot like mankind traveling back in time 3,000 years where a flashlight or a modern jacket would appear miraculous.

Technology that is distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced… That’s part of what you find in Loki’s Fire.

  2. Congrats to both of you on the new book!

I am working my way through LL’s older ones first, but I will get there in due course.

The government loves us in exactly the way that I love bacon.
