James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has uncovered the numbers: 𝟓𝟕𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞𝐬 owe $6.3 billion in unpaid federal taxes. The workforce that administers the tax code, enforces federal regulations, and draws a taxpayer-funded pension is stiffing the IRS. The trajectory is getting worse, not better. Tax debt among federal workers has 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝟑𝟐% 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏, and the number of delinquent employees jumped 43% in just three years. Fifty thousand federal employees failed to file a tax return at all for two or more years. Fourteen thousand of those earn over $100,000 a year. They didn’t forget. They didn’t fall through the cracks. They just didn’t file.

** In the wardroom on the boat. A submarine is a confined machine. Everything on board is chosen for its utility, and space is the rarest commodity. Before you get offended, there is also a goat locker for the chiefs on US Navy submarines. The traditional lounge, mess, and sleeping area are reserved exclusively for Chief Petty Officers.

** A federal appeals court has cleared the Trump administration to use expedited removal procedures for deportations on a nationwide basis, a ruling that eliminates the requirement for an immigration hearing, a judge’s review, or a formal due process proceeding before removal. The ruling expands the application of expedited removal — a legal procedure that had previously applied only to individuals caught within 100 miles of the U.S. border and within 14 days of entering the country. Under the court’s decision, the authority would apply to individuals anywhere in the United States, regardless of how long they have resided here. Immigration attorneys say the expansion represents the most significant shift in executive deportation authority in several decades, if the ruling stands. Several civil liberties organizations have indicated they intend to seek emergency stays and petition the Supreme Court for review.

Musk/DOGE and the US Navy

Elon Musk: Congress earmarked $𝟏𝟐 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 — more submarines. The Navy received the funds. Zero additional submarines were built. The Senate Armed Services Committee held a formal hearing to demand answers. The Navy’s answer: we don’t know. End of hearing. The money stayed gone. The federal government is 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 $𝟐 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 and fails its own audits. The submarine story isn’t an outlier — it’s the system operating as designed. Appropriations flow in. Deliverables don’t come out. The agency that can’t account for billions gets its budget renewed the following year because no one inside the system will say stop.

In Peru

A Peruvian court ordered the government to oversee a Chinese-owned port near Lima, helping US efforts to curb Beijing’s growing power in the region.

The ruling overturns a January decision that said the Pacific port of Chancay was exempt from some oversight by Peru’s infrastructure regulator, Ositran. Chancay is a privately owned port, operated by the Chinese-owned COSCO Shipping Ports, designed to reduce shipping times between Latin America and Asia. But as the US renewed its focus on the region, it became a focus of the growing rivalry between Washington and Beijing.

That earlier ruling raised alarms in the Donald Trump administration, which warned that this would undermine Peru’s sovereignty. Ositran also criticized that decision, arguing it would leave port users unprotected.

“Let this be a cautionary tale for the region and the world: cheap Chinese money costs sovereignty,” the US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs wrote last February in a post on X.

The US Ambassador to Peru, Bernie Navarro, celebrated the ruling on social media. He visited Chancay for the first time last month to donate two scanners to improve the work of Peru’s customs agency.

The $1.3-billion port was inaugurated by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2024. The Asian giant is Peru’s biggest trading partner, followed by the US. The new ruling accepted the argument that, although Chancay is privately owned, it is a public-use port. As a result, it falls under Ositran’s powers to regulate, supervise, inspect and sanction operators under Peruvian law, the regulator said in a statement. The decision can still be appealed. Cosco Shipping Ports did not respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this week, both Navarro and Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated conservative Keiko Fujimori for winning the presidential election, saying the Trump administration looks forward to deepening cooperation on regional security and trade.
