Ash Wednesday & Ramadan – Take your pick…

Blog Post

The Lunar New Year festivities are coming fast and furious.

Only yesterday, we celebrated the year of the Fire Horse. None of these holidays seems particularly fun to me, and you don’t even get a day off work in the USA. Yes, you can grimly whisper to people that they’re just dirt, and blow a little palm ash their way – which in itself can be entertaining, particularly if they’re close to dead and they’re taking mortality a little more seriously. I can’t remember anything Can’t tell if this is true or dream – Deep down inside I feel to scream – This terrible silence stops me… A little Metallica, anyone?

Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, a 40-day season (excluding Sundays) of fasting, prayer, and repentance for some Christians. Observed by Catholics and many Protestants, it involves receiving ashes on the forehead as a symbol of mortality and penance. It is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat.

Ashes from burned palm branches are placed on the forehead in the shape of a cross, symbolizing repentance, grief, and a return to dust. The words “Repent and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return” are often spoken. How bright and cheery can you get? Add lesbians doing a liturgical interpretive dance, holymen eyeing the choir boys, and modern religion takes form. Which is why the churches seem emptier.

Ramadan Kareem” translates to “Generous Ramadan” in Arabic, serving as a warm greeting during the holy month to wish someone a blessed and bountiful time of fasting, prayer, and charity. It is pronounced “Ramadan Kareem” or “Karim” and is used throughout the month, often reciprocated with “Allahu Akram” (God is more generous).

Hopefully, the religion of peace refrains from blowing infidels up during their holy month. I won’t hold my breath, though.

This is the only Ramadan theme song I could come up with.

Will the Netflix celebration overshadow Ramadan in the Hood?

Bullet Points:

** The British on reverse colonization. They have become the world’s leading experts on the subject.

** Requiem to the Rev. Jessie Jackson – fun at Jessie’s funeral. Why so sad?

** Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition – right – from Don Troiani, Historical ArtistHere is a detail from “Molly Pitcher” at the battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778, during a dreadful heat wave (global warming). This was a small oil painting in 2004. Nobody knows what she looked like, which gives the artist some good options. The heat may have claimed as many victims as the battle itself. I think that if I had to do this over, I would have changed her dress to a reddish-brown.

** Black History Month – tribute to KFC

** Continuing with the big month.

** Trannies account for the most mass shooters. Oh, what a shock.

** Is it more than gas? It has a huge magnetic field that sucks in asteroids and comets and helps to protect the inner solar system. Random chance or design? You be the judge.

** Job? That sounds disturbingly racist. The tribute to history continues.

** The atmosphere, the oceans, and the fresh water delivery system.

** What do Alexander the Great and Winnie the Pooh have in common? (scroll to the bottom for the answer)

** The old Hashknife Pony Express Route runs near the White Wolf Mine. (video) Every year, the Navajo County Sheriff sponsors a pony express ride from Holbrook to the Phoenix Valley (crossing through Coconino, Gila {Monster}, and Maricopa Counties). Times have changed. The traffic is different, but the riders are still nipping the bottle of popskull through their relay journey. Some things never change. (more here)

** Reality in Mexico. More reality – bull riding – and medical care. Ariba!

** A dinner announcement in Australia.

Russia

Can daily life in Russia improve? Or will it continue to degrade? Even if the war in Ukraine ended tomorrow, would the entropy stop, or has it passed the tipping point? Older Russians yearn for the old Communist days, which were remarkably like the present – long lines in front of stores, only to find when your number is called, there’s nothing to buy.

(h/t Claudio and Strategypage) Russians are unsure or uneasy about protesting the war. Russians traditionally put up with a lot of misfortunes without complaining. The current situation includes inflation, higher taxes, reduced infrastructure maintenance, including transportation, and dilapidated state-supported housing with water and heating problems. Even making these repairs yourself is difficult because the sanctions have disrupted the availability of tools and parts. Calling on a local repairman often won’t work because so many plumbers, carpenters, and electricians have been mobilized into the army to fight in Ukraine. Those who return describe a horrific experience dealing with drones and officers with orders to shoot any soldier who is reluctant to fight.

Everything costs more if you can find it on the frequently empty shelves of your local store. Travelling to other areas to care for an ill parent or to check whether local stores are better stocked is frustrating because railroads, buses, and commercial aircraft are unreliable. Most commercial aircraft are made by Boeing or Airbus, and sanctions prohibit upgrades, repairs, and spare parts for these aircraft. Some Russian airlines have improvised by carrying passengers on Russian-made cargo transport aircraft.

Russians have no one they can complain to, at least not anyone who can set things right. Government officials will record your complaint, file it away, and tell you, when you later make inquiries about progress, that a solution is coming. They never offer an arrival date for any solutions. There is another problem: an increasing number of officials are not Slavic Russians but people from the Central Asian or Caucasus regions of Russia. These people have a much higher birth rate and are outnumbering Slavic Russians in many areas.

Another disturbing trend is that fewer foreigners are seeking residency and citizenship in Russia. That is not really surprising to most Russians, who would also like to live in another country. Several years ago, the government outlawed the departure of military-age men from Russia. Many left illegally, and other civilians are blocked from legal migration because of the growing labor shortage.

You would think Russians would take to the streets to protest these problems. That’s not the way it is done these days. Government officials will pretend to listen but will do nothing. Russians know this, and most refuse to demonstrate, especially with all the other day-to-day problems they have to live with.

In any event, protesting Putin’s war won’t do anything. Even if Putin were to die, his successor would have no incentive to change anything, except maybe end the war in Ukraine. At the moment, that’s an impossible dream. These days, dreams are something almost all Russians can depend on.

War Clubs

Some years ago, I had the idea of making and selling replica gunstock war clubs on the commercial weapons market. Originals were/are generally in the 24-32″ x around 1-1.5″ thick x up to 8″ wide – the one in the Last of the Mohicans movie was made deliberately oversize (about 33%), although there are some pictured by G Catlin approaching that size.

John Baldwin’s book is seminal, “Indian Warclubs” (available from www.crazycrow.com item # 4153-004-255). Note the photo from that book and the description below.

Then as now, a warrior’s weapons reflect his personal style, his preferences, and there is always an underpinning of lethal art. That art was reflected in a warrior’s dress and in the story it told. There were successful warriors and less successful warriors. It was a matter of luck and of personal initiative.

They had no notion that they were “owed” anything or that they “deserve” anything. For a warrior, life is competition. You need to look no further than nature. If a lion sits around all day and decides not to hunt, it doesn’t eat. If it doesn’t eat, it dies. Simple. Brutal. Reality.

Times have changed, and today we have compassion for the weakest among us. We see others who will not work or put in effort, and we refuse to let them starve. We make sure they have what they need to survive. We, the capable, the workers, decide that we will not let another human being die while we have the means to prevent it. And we may not be doing society any favors in the long term.  The government uses tax dollars to create a dependent class that it uses to generate votes. It raises them like cattle for those votes, feeds them, keeps them dependent, and kills the warrior within them.

I posted this on the blog in 2016. This is a retro post from then. Nothing has changed. The legal liability and insurance costs if I did this make the manufacture of such weapons, other than for personal use, not commercially viable.

Doing it today – in 2026, now that I am 10 years older, I’d want to include an authentic inner city scalplock to decorate the weapon. I’ve become more wicked as I’ve aged.

Identify the Ship

1 & 2

Yes, I know it’s easy. It’s just a cool picture – one of my favorites.

3

This class did a lot of heavy lifting & you have a hull number to work with.

4

I don’t know if you can ID the particular ship from the photo, but you should get the class.

5

This one may take a little longer to ID. Getting the class down is good enough.

From my experience, Marxists resist bathing too. Obvious.

  1. The humor book “Through History with J. Wesley Smith” featured Molly Pitcher on one page; a guy was complaining to an officer that Molly had taken his cannon away from him, with Molly loading another round to go.

  2. Love the Dust in the wind clip. “The people of the south wind”. The smoke from the huge wildfires in the Texas/Oklahoma panhandle and southwest Kansas hit us around 22:00 hours last night which resulted in numerous “there is smoke everywhere” calls. South wind indeed!

  3. 1 & 2 – USS Chicago & USS Long Beach guided-missile cruisers
    3 – HMS Alisma Flower-class corvette
    4 – HMS Afridi Tribal-class destroyer
5 – French Guépard-class destroyer maybe the Milan

  4. Identify the Ship:
    1. USS Chicago (CG-11)
    2. USS Long Beach (CGN-9)
    3. Flower-class corvette HMS Alisma
    4. Tribal-class destroyer (WW2) HMS Afridi
    5. Guépard-class contre-torpilleur

  5. Reverse Colonization: Less commonly known as ‘Self-Flagellation Immolation’…while making it sound justifiable. The brainwashing is complete in some…or many.
    ***
Tranny Shootings: Gee, what could possibly go wrong with imbibing psycho-drugs? Time to hold the Pop-Psyche people accountable with a stint in County. Might as well toss in judges who let criminals out who then do harm (likely the only way to rid our courts of these black robed activists).
    ***
Parting Shot: NYC voters are finding out the reality of electing all three categories in one with ‘MadMommie’ (tax and “regulation” increases anyone, enjoy your captivity folks). Yet another ‘groomed Manchurian’. The cycle never ends with these people.
    ***
Pony Express: You could set up a beverage cart or food truck since it runs nearby the WWM, make a little walking around cash.

    1. Is there a market for genuine sourdough and mutton food trucks? And how would that play with the locals (range wars over cattle and sheep grazing)?
      .
(The Pleasant Valley War, sometimes called the Tonto Basin Feud, or Tonto Basin War, or Tewksbury-Graham Feud, was a range war fought in Pleasant Valley, Arizona, in the years 1882–1892. The conflict involved two feuding families, the Grahams and the Tewksburys.)

      1. Depends on how you market it…add ‘Authentic’ to the food truck signage and the spectator hoards will show up. Oh, and make sure you offer [Authentic] Funnel Cakes, every male in attendance will want one. All this at premium ‘remote location’ pricing. Everybody wins….which the will Libs love; you do all the work and they get the results.

        1. Authentic Food Trucks:

          >10 years feud? Some people just can’t get over themselves
A paltry 10 years? Please, wigga. The Cantonese still bitch about Mandarin speakers as “invaders”. It’s like an Englishman bitching about someone called FitzHugh, ancestors nearly a thousand years British-born, as a “goddamn Norman invader”. And all the Chinese still talk shit about those Hsiung-Nu barbarians. But the Chinese are rookies compared to the Middle East for grudges.

          1. Hahah…forgot about that one…”authentic”, heh.
Okay, I stand corrected, especially since -as you point out – the ME folks have been “feuding” for thousands of years over some patch of desert, so yeah, the Grahams and the Tewksburys are total amateurs by comparison, actually, probably not even on the feud-al chart.
Curious who would be the charts top ten? American-based Hatfield/McCoy boyz did pretty well, but Middle East goofballs must cover the top 5. (Reminds me to re-watch Kingdom of Heaver – Directors Cut)

      2. 10 years feud? Some people just can’t get over themselves…not unlike modern LGBTQRST2Spirit types and their handlers. Toss in Democrats in that same group of self-loathers who want others to pay for their mistakes…heck 213 of them used their Congressional ID’s to vote against Voter ID. The optics are lost on some people.

      3. Loving the food blog! Navajo lamb Gyro’s, killer. Mrs W. and the girls have been toying with naan. Garlic naan with pesto.

An Oregon friend is married to a passionate cook. They built a trailer for Roundup ect. Philly cheesesteak + smash burgers with hand cut fries. Had to add frozen custard.

        1. Gunstock clubs; interested to know which types of wood prefered or to avoid. For clubs and rifle stocks.

          1. The original clubs were made from gunstocks. Tower (Brown Bess) were made of walnut of different grades as were Charleville muskets, produced in French arsenals like Charleville, Maubeuge, and St. Etienne.

  6. Job title. These days, I find the same two words seem apropos for more than one block on a job app.

    “Simple S–t”.

    Maybe I’m getting old too.

          1. “If you’re not making mistakes…you’re not trying hard enough.” (h/t to LL for being able to self edit, totally lost art for me as I tend to read past my errors…until I hit ‘comment’, then they stick out like a sore thumb)

          2. Seeing a mistake right after hitting the Post Comment button – isn’t that called the ohno second?

      1. ‘Self-Imposed Salt Miner’.
The smart me should be playing ‘I’m retired so can slack off’ Pickleball in the Florida sun and lounging by the pool with some sort of adult beverage and snacks…but ‘nooo’, like some crazy nut decided to sell the fully outfitted homestead for raw land and build another hovel. (heh…actually loving it, has a stream) Upside is the move required a new-used emotional support tractor, highly effective for mental therapy…plus it has a cup holder for “beverages” to ease the rigger[mortis] of the [self-imposed] day job.

          1. True…especially with these (only to name two):
            https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2026/02/colorado-democrats-introduce-bill-fully-decriminalize-prostitution-could/
            https://legalinsurrection.com/2026/02/colorado-in-state-tuition-discount-for-illegals-requires-doj-investigation-equal-protection-project/
            – ALWAYS the Democrats.
Juxtaposed to this as some college-centered city councils decided to go ‘sanctuary’ against state law:
            https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2026/02/montanas-governor-ag-launch-investigation-possible-violations-statewide/
            – E-S-T: Never fails to lift the spirit..especially when streaming ‘Your American Heritage’. (yeah, total suck up move…but not wrong)

          2. Dunno…maybe I’m special…for once. Likely the blind squirrel thing…ignorance is bliss.

(Just had to say what follows as it’s a frigid snow day here and tax prep is getting further back-burnered as I procrastinate on the hateful practice)…
            .
It could simply be I’m like the ‘BREAKING!! SAVANNAH GUTHRIE’S’ mom Gloved & Masked Porch Perp and can get away with it Scot free despite being ‘fully outfitted by WalMart’ but somehow no purchase receipts or surveillance – and – despite local law enforcement and EffBeeEye reportedly turning over every rock in a two mile radius. Apparently NO ONE in this modern ‘cam’s everywhere’ era has Ring or CCTV footage. Not buying it, we all watch ‘See No Evil’. Heck, they even fired up half a dozen pro-level DNA labs while getting Parabon involved to affect a likely suspect ‘snapshot’ (cool tech no less)…and now – like it was just invented yesterday – Forensic Geneology being added to the mix, to no avail of course, but we got the full lesson on how it works like we’re rubes.
This ‘drip drip’ will never end until PDJT’s term is up and/or the Fraud and Criminality has been forgotten by the General Public.

          3. I’ll refrain now I know the rules, don’t want ANY special treatment, otherwise I’ll have to pay the fee. (Okay, I’ll buy some WWM merch…Minor League ball caps are going for $56, apparently this is the new ‘affordable’ rate for ‘official’ logo’d ballcaps.)

  7. ** The atmosphere, the oceans, and the fresh water delivery system.
“…If all that water fell at once, it would drown every continent, mountains, deserts, cities, everything underwater.”
That’s scary. Imagine if that ever happened.
Or read about it. Genesis 6:9–9:17

    1. Always thought the Genesis rains were exactly how you describe, plenty of atmospheric moisture available.
Moons ago some guy – who sounded very credible – was promoting (in his seminars) the sky was filled with ice and God had it melt, thus rain, lots of it. Plausible. Then again we were told in school – way before the Left took over – that dinosaurs are the reason for oil, sold like the snake-oil it was. Never could figure how many dinosaurs there had to be to create that much stored crude that far down. Then again, as an engineer-type I have ‘The Knack’ for such basic questions, but as a kid just never had the guts to ask the teacher ‘the how’…in my era you didn’t question the teacher.

  8. We were out to sea in the WestPac with the Long Beach in ’73 I believe it was. They did a flank run past us and I couldn’t believe something that big could go that fast. I believe you could waterski behind it. Maybe waveboard?
Might have had something to do with the old boiler driven can I was on but still.
I think there may be only one boiler driven ship left in the fleet.
I know there are no more BTs

  9. My subordinates decided my real title is “Speaker to Military Pilots”.
“I don’t understand what he even wants and he’s using acronyms I’ve never heard of and he’s on some weird phone connection with a two-second delay and can you PLEASE just take him instead of me??!?”
“Oh! This’ll be loads more fun than my paperwork. Send it!”

    1. >some weird phone connection with a two-second delay
      Shhhh!
      [looks around over shoulders]
Don’t talk about Moonbase! (No one is supposed to know about that. That’s a secret!!!!)

  10. >Times have changed, and today we have compassion for the weakest among us. We see others who will not work or put in effort, and we refuse to let them starve.
That’s only part of it. Compassion, misplaced or not, is one thing, but the other component (far more corrosive, IMNSHO) is that Victimhood has replaced Virtue and Merit. We subsidize certain groups, be they racially defined, or drugs-associated (“junkie” is highly offensive, he’s an Opioid-American), or whatever, because we have been taught they are victims, and there is no greater moral superiority than being a victim.

Worse than the economic drain [1] is the continual forced cognitive dissonance: We are not allowed to Notice group differences if the misbehaving group is a Designated Victim Group. I posit this is in small part because of misinterpretation of Christian teachings, and in far larger part because for many decades now our culture has been shaped and largely controlled by persons who simultaneously genuinely believe themselves to be eternally-at-risk victims (and that victimhood is heritable [2]), and because they know that their sacred victimhood is hugely effective as both a club and as a shield. So of course “our” culture now venerates victimhood, because it keeps those at the top at the top.

[1] Worse in the spiritual sense, which I think is more important than the economic, in the long run. Only an idiot fails to understand that Noticing certain things will get you fired, at the least, and if the Good People have their way, “unbanked” unhoused, etc. So we continually force ourselves to turn a blind eye to criminality, perversion, and so forth, and even worse, we actively go along with pretending that mentally-ill men are women (and make them Admirals in the Public Health Service, yet, for example), we have to pretend that all groups are equally intelligent (but we do NOT have to pretend that Asians have penises JUST as large as negroes; weird that, eh?) and that any differences in test results or economic status are due to racism. Eating leftover pizza for lunch and dinner and then plain ramen for the next three days until payday is one thing. Being forced to continually say things you know to be wrong and even harmful is much much worse. There is no particular shame to being poor. There is however shame and spiritual rot from not only turning a blind eye to, but actively participating in wickedness and lies.
[2] Heritability of Victimhood: There is no such thing as a Nth-Generation Survivor. What a crock. If that insufferable twink David Hogg ever has children his spawn will NOT be “Second-Generation Parkland Survivors”.

  11. Marxists re :…’ the Soviets would push wherever they sensed weakness, retreat when met with
firm boundaries and collapse if forced to confront internal contradictions.
His prescription was simple: contain, don’t provoke; pressure, don’t panic.’
