Originally composed by Pierre de Geyter in 1888, it has been the standard for most socialist and left-wing movements, with the Second Internationale adopting it as their official anthem, and anarchists, socialists, communists, and other leftists celebrating its use. The USSR before the 1930’s also used this as its official anthem, with the lyrics translated into multiple languages.

For most people, the story of the medieval world was one of cramped cities, constant violent crime, and episodic outbreaks of deadly plagues—the dividends of unclean urban conditions, rotting food, fouled water, open sewage, and unchecked rats, fleas, and lice. Most of each day was spent simply trying to survive until the next.

Castles and walls dotted the landscape to protect kingdoms from marauding tribes and foreign invaders. City gates were usually closed at dusk to keep out nocturnal marauders. Public executions drew massive crowds. And religious schisms and conflicts often turned deadly.

** Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, introduced H.R. 10268 Thursday to eliminate SNAP’s Restaurant Meals Program, which lets qualifying recipients buy prepared food from approved restaurants. From June 2023 through May 2025, figures cited by lawmakers put restaurant redemptions across nine states at more than $524 million. California accounted for approximately $475 million, followed by Arizona at $41.4 million and New York at $3.6 million.

** AfD just won a landslide in eastern Germany. 44.5%.  They ran on one message: send them home. Close the border. Cut welfare. Carry out the largest deportations in modern German history. They tried to smear them as far-right; in reality, this is how the majority of the country feels. It’s mainstream.

** The USS Abraham Lincoln’s port visit in Thailand lasted five days because it was planned as a brief stop for rest, basic resupply, and crew relief before the aircraft carrier continued its long journey home to San Diego. I ask if you can go on a proper heater in Thailand with only 5 days ashore? What was the standard time ashore in Olongapo? At least two weeks. Were there baby chicks available for drunk sailors to feed to crocodiles in Thailand the way there were in the P.I.? Those who recall Cobra Gold deployments to Thailand may recall catching cobras with their bare hands, then killing the snakes and drinking their blood. (gives you the runs – or maybe the food did?) Were those options afforded to US warfighters during the short 5-day leave? How many swabbies were engaged to be married during that five-day span? How many sailors and Marines missed ship’s movement? How many captain’s masts? How many crewmen were blind for three days after they were assisted up the brow by their shipmates? This is a nonfiction history book. The events described here took place in Borneo during the Indonesian Confrontation in the latter half of 1964 and in the Republic of Vietnam during that country’s fight for its very existence throughout 1965-1968. Malaysia, with the assistance of its allies, prevailed in the Confrontation. Unfortunately, the Republic of Vietnam, after being abandoned by its allies, succumbed to a full-scale Communist armored and infantry invasion in April 1975.

This is the story of an Australian Army officer who was seconded to support the efforts of the Republic of Vietnam in their clandestine war against the National Liberation Front. The story is told precisely as events unfolded, without efforts to minimize or maximize. It’s a story of a brutal civil war, of a proxy war, of love, death, and revenge in a war-torn setting. Both the government of the Republic of Vietnam and the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong) engaged in systematic assassination as a matter of policy. Reading this book requires that you view it in the context of the people and events as they occurred.

In an about section, the conference states “Socialism 2026 is a four-day conference bringing together thousands of socialists and radical activists from around the country to take part in discussions about social movements, abolition, Marxism, decolonization, working-class history, and the debates and strategies for organizing today.”

Continuing, it states, “Every year, the Socialism conference is a place where activists share lessons from their struggles—from anti-ICE organizing to the fight for gender liberation, from striking workers to Palestine solidarity campaigns, the struggle to stop the destruction of the planet, the fight against racism, and more.”

A conference agenda lists several programs, including “Marxism Education Series,” “Reproductive Justice Strategy Session,” “Sing, Struggle, Organize: Movement Songs, Political Education, and Collective Power,” and “Abolition Judaism: The Revolutionary Possibilities of Diaspora.”

Sponsors of the conference include the DSA and the Palestinian Youth Movement, among many other radical left organizations.
