President Trump announced Friday that the U.S. will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported without tariffs for 90 days, his latest move to bring down prices that have surged 57% in five years. Ground beef now averages $6.89 a pound, driven by the smallest U.S. cattle herd since the 1950s. Drought and high feed costs have forced ranchers to cut back, squeezing domestic supply. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the U.S. had a commitment that the beef would sell for 25% below current market prices, though he didn’t say which countries would supply it. It’s the government’s second tariff waiver for beef this year, after allowing 80,000 metric tons of Argentine imports in February. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association criticized the move, saying it would not address Trump’s stated intention of helping to increase the size of the U.S. beef herd.

Where’s the Beef – I have family and friends raising and feeding out beef here in Ohio. They and Cattleman nationwide are up in arms over this. It is nothing more than a election year ploy. Will have no long term effect on the cost of beef or the upcoming election IMO. Solution? The cattle industry has to increase the herd size through raising heifer’s to breed instead of feeding them out for butcher. That is an expensive and long term solution that needs to start now. Western drought is severely complicating the effort to do so.
Harry & spouse – they don’t have anywhere else to grift. I think that Canada is too cold for them, and Australia is unlikely to welcome them and provide the sort of lifestyle they demand. Old Hong Kong might have taken them in as curiosities, but the workers’ paradise reclaimed it. The world doesn’t offer that many options and the US is tired of them (too). The British Caliphate is all they have left.
I saw a story, I think was in the Farm Bureau monthly paper, that some cattle ranchers are enjoying the beef shortage because they are getting higher prices and less work. They really don’t want to increase the size of the American Herd. I don’t know about the higher prices as on the other hand, I have seen that the cattle ranchers are not getting that much more at the sales. The real profits seem to be accumulating in the middlemen, the slaughter houses and wholesalers, so I have to wonder if the cattle ranchers that are enjoying the beef shortage are heavily invested in the middle part. They may be the ones that have small processing plants and sell as supposedly ranch direct products at high prices.
Cattleman is hard; dairyman is harder. I’m not an expert at either, though I was around the beef and sheep biz as a young boy. The middlemen have a better lobby in DC.

There is a federal limit of greater than125 cows and you get additional regulations and government inspectors. My nephew runs a 120 cow heard. It fluctuates and he has to sell early sometimes to stay under the 125 cap.
He sells to premium butchers and to the processor who makes Bubba Burgers. He has been doing well with his beef.
Part of the reduced US beef is due to Biden’s admin shutting off grazing, watering and transit rights that many ranchers out west had held for over 100 years.

Can’t be profitable if you can’t graze your cattle, can’t have access to not-paid-for water and you have to trailer the cattle from one plot to another rather than just using roads and walking the damned things.

I think the slow and steady decline will continue with KC3 ruling as a satrap of sorts on behalf of the Caliphate. There are a LOT of pensioners in Old Blighty who will die off and be replaced by the ‘new arrivals.’ I don’t know how long the royals have left before they’re asked politely to leave for Canada or wherever.

With Ground beef now averaging $6.89 a pound it must very expensive in other parts of the country. I got 94% lean for $4.95 and 82% for $4:09 two days ago at the store. If you live where the food is produced it is cheaper. I am in one of the highest food producing counties in the US.
A pound of 22-26 count per pound wild shrimp is about the same as a porterhouse steak, $13 a pound at the store. At least 3 meals in my household. Did I mention I live 40 miles from the coast or that my nephew runs about 120 cows? That porterhouse drops to $3.80 a pound with a half Black Angus side. Ground beef is also $3.80 a pound on a side. All cuts are $3.80 a pound on a side. We are 2 months from slaughtering the next steer and I have to buy meat right now. Poor planning on my part.
