federal money that is then spent on their citizens. It’s a shell game that you’ll see played out in their demands over the coming months. The Democrats are going to go all in on healthcare for all. It will be their mantra and rallying cry. The only places where those national healthcare nets work are places where state oil money and a small indigenous population (see Qatar and Norway) can earmark significant oil money to subsidize it. Even many oil-rich countries with small populations (see Canada) can’t sustain national healthcare at the level it needs to operate at.
The democrats have no interest in reforming private healthcare insurance. They demand an ObamaCare style all-government pot that they can dip into. Of course, it will fail again as it has in the past. Healthcare aside, the ability to register illegal aliens to vote and then vote for them, which is also prohibited, is just about the only play that the democrats have remaining. The US Department of Defense announced on September 30 that it had reduced the US military presence in Iraq. A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Baghdad characterized the force reduction as a transition to a “more traditional bilateral security partnership.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said that Iraqi and American envoys will meet by the end of the year for additional discussions on the withdrawal, according to the Associated Press. American officials, including the new U.S. Central Command head, Adm. Brad Cooper, recently met with the new Syrian President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Damascus for security discussions.
Despite the drawdown in both countries over recent months, U.S. forces based in Iraq and Syria remain busy. U.S. Central Command announced in March that a U.S. airstrike had killed ISIS’s chief of global operations in western Iraq. U.S. troops also conducted operations against ISIS in Syria in July and August.

US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on September 29 declaring that the United States will consider “any armed attack” on Qatar as a “threat to the peace and security” of the United States. Qatar is already a major non-NATO US ally, which provides it with military and economic privileges but did not entail any security commitments from the United States before Trump’s executive order.

Qatar – We have the largest US military base in the Middle East, located in Qatar, with approximately 10,000 US servicemen/women based there. I agree that the politics can be complicated there, but no more difficult than our ‘ally’, Israel. Given that I’ve been in Doha within the past month, I may have a different perspective on the place.

Middle East Politics – My current day job has me dealing with situations in the Middle East, and I don’t think that, as complex as Qatar and Israel can be, for example, that the rest of the region is no less complicated. US politics is complex, too, but more easily comprehensible to me (an American). So much of this defaults back to cultural issues, historical issues, tribal/factional interests, and in that place (as in Texas), there is also oil.
I defer to your expertise in Southwest Asia.
Am I off base seeing a parallel between our troops in USAREUR 1950’s-1970’s as a Soviet tripwire and their current deployment in places like Qatar? Some sixty years later I can still remember looking across that 50 meter barrier many times. Seems I will never lose the enlisted swine distrust of those above me all the way to the Oval Office. Then, there is the matter of 50,000+ lives pissed away in Vietnam. I don’t want to see that happening again. I’ll stop now before I start on Afghanistan.
