** Russian Icebreakers (h/t Claudio) – Russia is having problems building new icebreaker ships because of the Ukraine War-related economic sanctions. Despite the sanctions, Russia wants to build as many as 17 nuclear-powered icebreakers. Achieving that goal depends on lifting the sanctions. That means negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine. With nuclear-powered icebreakers, Russia can keep the Northern Sea Route/NSR that stretches across northern Russia from Archangel and Murmansk to Vladivostok. When you consider that Russia is only a major power because of petroleum exports (and nuclear weapons), and the shadow fleet is declining, I wonder if the goal will remain the same? The Red Chinese want to get into the icebreaker game as well, which is interesting because they don’t have territory that borders the Arctic. They hoped to grab Greenland for themselves, but I think that dream has passed along with the Year of the Snake.
** President Trump signed a historic agreement with Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb to build up to 11 new icebreakers in partnership with Finland’s storied shipbuilding industry. “We’re buying the finest icebreakers in the world,” Trump said during the signing ceremony. “And Finland is known for making them.”

(h/t Claudio and Strategypage) The Ukrainian SBU, an internal security agency, appears to have organized this campaign, as it has run similar operations in the past. The Russian FSB, the successor to the dreaded Soviet-era KGB, has been on the case and reported that this terror campaign was well-organized and extensive. Worse, the FSB found that many people in Russia were active in carrying out these killings. This is because several million Russians and Ukrainians were displaced from Ukraine during the war. Some fled, others were forced into Russia. The SBU has been in touch with many of these former Ukrainian residents and found many of them willing to fight back against the Russians from inside Russia.
Since 2022, more of these exiles have turned against Russia, and the SBU took advantage of that. The FSB knows this because they have managed to discover some of the shipments of weapons and explosives shipped into Russia from European countries for these Ukrainian operatives. Some of the weapons used were obtained in Russia. As disabled or deserting Russian soldiers returned home, some brought weapons and explosives with them as souvenirs. Others planned to use these items for criminal activities. It’s not just the Ukrainians who are bringing the war home to Russia; many pro-Ukraine Russian veterans of the war are doing so as well.
Russian intelligence noted that a growing number of these attacks are against Russian government officials. While Russian officers and troops are guilty of atrocities in Ukraine, their superiors are responsible. The attack victims are beginning to include more senior government officials, and the FSB fears that the campaign will eventually include Vladimir Putin and his close associates. Providing additional security for that many senior officials is not feasible. The growing labor shortage in Russia extends to government departments. Wealthy Russians have been able to send their families abroad for extended visits, at least until the war and its domestic hazards are past. All the reliable personnel security people are employed, and finding additional people is nearly impossible. The Ukrainians figured this out first and timed their internal Russian assassination program for when the targets would have the least protection.

Worst President: Depends on how much power (both legally, and “soft power”) the President actually has. At first I was thinking Harris, for the reasons ML Thomas said above. But on reflection I think Big Mike (BM). Harris is an idiot, but doesn’t seem to resent and actively hate the US, White people, straight people, etc, nearly as much as BM. BM’s bottom did tremendous damage to the US based on his soft power. BM would be even worse, though xir soft power is FAR lower than it was in the first term of the Lightbringer. (Xir popularity seems to have cratered; partly because normal people are finally fed up with negrolatry — which was a substantial portion of Bottom Obama’s soft power, but also because BM has revealed xirself as a rather dreadful individual). Clinton of 2016 would have been bad, but maybe not the worst, so long as she got her skim. She was probably intelligent and practical enough to not kill the golden goose. On the “new Acela” this morning (new passenger cars). Put it down to my innate conservatism, but I liked the old ones better. The new one has open (and narrow) overhead luggage racks, and sickly yellow banquette tables (old trains had overhead compartments with doors, and wood-tone tables). On the plus side, the new train has power outlets between the seats, reachable by both seatmates, whereas the old ones had plugs by the floor on the side of the car (so aisle-seat person would have to ask window-seat person to plug in their stuff). But the most annoying thing this morning is that across the aisle are two mid-30’s Finance Bros who have been chattering nonstop. One white one, one Indian one, both of whom have that peculiar nasally-resonant tone that cuts through everything, headphones be damned. (It’s too early in the AM to max out the volume on Sabaton, or Tommy Johansson.) And neither seems to be aware of the concept of “indoor voice”. (I don’t need to hear about your gym membership costs, and your anticipated bonus, and when your pension vests, you parasitic jackasses.)

Police lockers – guy I knew was cleaning house(rental) after being divorced; something to keep him busy. Neighbors reported the unusual activity and somehow the police got a search warrant(??!!!??) and took his firearms back to the station with them. After the whatever investigation and ballistics checks they decided he wasn’t guilty of anything and let him know the good news. He asked for his firearms back, they asked if they could keep them. Repeat that last cycle a number of times. They finally relented and told him he could come and get them. When he showed up he was handed a large box filled with individual parts, all mixed together.
The outrage notwithstanding, they had a SEARCH WARRANT? I wonder what the offended citizen’s background is. It doesn’t justify asshollery, but I’d still like to know.
One of their informants was killed, and they suspected it was done in a basement somewhere. A guy suddenly cleaning house was suspicious. As I remember, he worked in corrections. As for the warrant, I think the police chief had some judges who were VERY helpful. One ad hoc conversation with a gal brought up her family coming to town for Christmas shopping. At some point their car was broken into and all the packages were taken. One gift-to-be was a one-off globe made by a local craftsman. After several visits to get an update of the theft they actually got to see the police chief, who told them he doubted they’d ever be able to find the thieves and the stolen items…all while that globe was sitting on his desk. This would have taken place around the late 60’s/early 70’s.
One shooting buddy worked at the prison until he got a job with security at a nuclear power plant in Illinois. Also did some shooting at the police range with a friend. Some conversations were interesting. At the prison the officer in charge of transporting low security risk inmates to appointments(doctor, dentist, lawyer) would sometimes make extra money by taking a detour to his house where he pimped out his wife – a parade of orange jumpsuits going in and out of the house…nothing suspicious there. Another time everyone from captain up through the warden were given the option of quitting and leaving the state, or face felony charges for payroll shenanigans. Not surprising that people working there could be viewed with jaundiced eyes.
It sounds like capitalism. And as to conjugal visits – it’s better than expecting HIM to work overtime for extra cash.

The estimated numbers of guns in private hands in the US always seems to be low by about 200 million or more. I seriously know someone who has all of his family’s guns, from the late 1700s to today, all working, all still quite usable. And just the ‘legacy’ guns adds up to over 50, not including what he has collected.

My eldest brother has my dad’s hunting shotgun, his trap gun and skeet gun(bought in Japan, really nice 1950s vintage,) a couple pistols and then the two hunting shotguns, one for boar and one for deer, that eldest brother bought. Rocky Mountain lad might want to practice breathing the air or drinking it before he makes the move. If he’s adverse to humidity he might look elsewhere. Being a native of the Texas Gulf Coast I can still manage the humidity when I go back. Even the webs between my toes start to limber up after a couple of days.

Regarding the ‘medieval’ fighting video, we in the SCA actually have a term for it. “Hollywood Fighting.” And I’ve been to an event where we did that, running into and through at least 2-3 ranks of people until one of the referees blew a whistle and we all started fighting. It was great for me because I can run almost as fast as I can speed walk (no, not kidding, actually verified in high school and at two “fighter college” events,) so I got to the fighting about the time the really fast ones got themselves ‘killed.’

But, yeah, Hollyweird has no idea about warfare, heck they get modern warfare wrong half the time which is why having good advisors (and listening to them) makes or breaks a war flick.

Hollyweird also has no clue about weapons, as we all know. Once saw a western where the gatling gun ‘jams’ because one firing pin is missing. Um, no. All that would happen is the gun would expel the unfired round. Which just about any curious kid would know. Then there’s the remake of “The Magnificent Seven” where the poor cowboys rustle up a, yes, gatling gun, because gatling guns are cheap and found everywhere, right? Stupid movie idiots.

Not even going to rant about the new “Odyssey” movie where the armor and weapons are post-Hellenic or Hellenic (which, duh, the siege of Troy was like way before the Hellenic period) and Helen of Troy is an ugly crack-whore looking Africanish person.
The ugly negro crack whore wouldn’t launch a dinghy. “Hey, Beans, some of those Turks stole my field slave.” –> Get her back yourself.
Yeah… not even worth peasant or serf classification. She’s not a good actress either. Almost like she’s getting jobs for the color of her skin rather than the content of her character and acting ability. Perfect example of “Black History Month.”
As to a throwaway gun, well, expensive guns are nice to shoot at the range, but a good inexpensive gun for hunting or self-defense is a thing.

Just remember, no matter how ‘justifiable’ the shoot is when you help some thug reach ambient temperature, the local prosecutor’s office or the state’s prosecutor’s office will, inevitably, rule against you. So when you whack some person, make sure your friends clean out your gun collection before the prosecutor has a chance to seize them, and keep them for about a year. This requires really good friends as getting your guns back from not-so-good friends can inevitably lead to unfriending.
