Sailing Before the Wind

** Knots have long been thought to have magical properties, including the power to control the wind. So-called wind knots were tied into a rope or a rag and sold by witches to superstitious sailors, especially captains, who would untie the three knots they contained to release the wind. The 17th-century Norwegian Poet Petter Dass explained what happened next:

“Untie but the one for a gentle, good breeze. The sails will be filled, and you will make progress with ease. But if you the second will loosen, you will pull in the canvas to barely half-mast. The third will send wind that will race you so fast that pumps you must report it.”

So be very careful with your wind knots and use them wisely.

** Grapeshot, 1861 -65—The grapeshot was hardening ammunition for land and sea. It was made of a wooden base called a sabot, a wooden rod, and a canvas bag filled with iron balls fixed around these wooden parts.

Twine was tied around the outside to help the projectile keep its shape. It was coated with red oxide paint to prevent the shot from rusting. The finished product loosely resembled a bunch of grapes covered by a quilt, giving the projectile its name.

When fired from a cannon, the bag and wooden parts were blown apart, and the cannon exploded with iron balls in a cone of destruction, much like the blast of an oversized shotgun.

** Ahoy is a term familiar to just about everyone and is the classic nautical greeting. It can also be pronounced as a warning or farewell. However, its use is uncommon nowadays as it is considered too old.

The word comprises two parts: the a, used to attract attention. The hoy, which had been used since the 13th century as a call to motivate the cattle, was also used. As such, it was also used in seafaring and as an attention-getter. The Scottish poet William Falconer, author of a nautical dictionary, wrote in 1769: “If the master intends to give any order to the people in the main-top, he calls, Main-top, hoay! To which they answer, Holloa!” but the form hoay is used here, not ahoy, which is due to the different dialects and forms of the word itself. But here, too, it is to be seen as drawing attention. The first time ahoy is consciously perceived is in Tobias Smollet’s The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, 1751, as: “Ho! The house a hoy!” pronounced by a seaman.

The word itself, however, has been used for a long time and is also found in many different languages. It is not possible to say precisely where the word comes from. Some say it comes from the 13th or 14th-century Middle English. But it is most likely to have come from the Vikings (9th century onwards) because one of their cries was “Aoi” when they were racing their boats towards an enemy.

No one can say with certainty where it comes from, and whether it was really to be understood as a drive, to draw attention, or as a greeting can also no longer be said; perhaps it was all together. In the end, we know today’s Ahoy as a greeting.

** The crew of a merchant ship in the service of the Merchant Service (not the East/ West India Company) consisted of two groups, as we know it from the Navy. The officers and the regular sailors.Officers

The officers on board were the Captain/Master, Mates, and the Carpenter. Captains/Masters (the Captain could also be only a Master in terms of rank, but had the same function) who tended to stay close to the coast, had a very good local knowledge of the surroundings and rather theoretical knowledge of navigation and therefore tended to have less education to show than those who had more education due to their background. These men, mostly the sons of wealthy merchants, mostly traded overseas and were masters of navigation. The Captain/Master selected mates and usually had no special training. The Captain/Master trained them.

It is important to note that only the Captain/Master and the 1st Mate were protected by the Impressment. All others were at the Royal Navy’s free disposal and could be taken at any time, even if they were on the high seas. The Captain/Master could be the ship’s owner and act freely. But they usually offered themselves to a larger company if they owned a ship. Mostly, however, they were hired by companies that owned several ships.

Merchant seamen were no different from their counterparts aboard warships in many ways. Most of them remained in merchant service because they had escaped the impressment or were protected. For example, Greenland fishermen who worked only in the summer could not be pressed and worked for the merchant service in the autumn and winter. The same applied to invalids, who could still work but were considered unsuitable for the navy.

These men often sought employment in the merchant service. However, former officers who left the Navy because they could no longer get a job or the prospects were not good (midshipmen and lieutenants) often entered the merchant service. In general, however, merchant ships had fewer crew than warships. But this did not mean that the ships were less cramped. On the contrary, any free space was filled with cargo. On the other hand, it was often said that the men were better provided than on a warship.

This meme is not accurate. USGOV trains people to do this every single year. I realize that people are critical of government agencies, but the substitution of Pedo Joe Biden for President Trump is one example. We do it all over the world all of the time. So yes, it’s trained, practiced, and applied. Army Special Forces (Green Berets) was explicitly designed to do that by training indigenous people to carry out this activity. It’s practiced at Robin Sage as a graduation exercise in Pineland.
