Submarine Propulsion
Q – Why do the US submarines have a ring around the propeller when the Soviet submarines leave their propeller exposed? Two types of “rings” can appear around the outside of a submarine propeller (or propulsor) – a Shroud and a Duct. Unfortunately, these names are often used interchangeably.
A – A shroud is a non-moving circle of metal that primarily protects a conventional propeller from damage and can (under certain conditions) enhance the water flow, making the propeller more efficient. These appear on some surface ships and the (old) Russian Typhoon Class SSBN but not on US submarines. Shrouds are also often fitted to movable propeller pods, eliminating the need for rudders by rotating the entire propeller assembly.
A duct is a shaped tube of metal that surrounds a propulsor (also known as a pump-jet). They are fitted on all three US Seawolf class and Virgnia class (22 boats) which have pumpjet shrouded impellers. Pup-jet propulsion is slowly being adopted by Russian submarines. The first Russian propulsor was the trial Kilo Class Alrosa, followed by the Borey Class SSBN. The inside of a propulsor does not look like a normal propeller but rather has two sets of fins, one static (stator) and one rotating (rotor). This reduces speed slightly but significantly reduces noise – a major factor for submarines. It is also advanced technology, one reason why the US and others have a long lead over Russian designs. An ITAR tightly controls US pump-jet technology.

Hoeing outfit – after one trip to town for something, my dad returned and mentioned a neighbor lady out working a field with a tractor and…he didn’t notice what the tractor was pulling because she had her dress lifted up and wrapped around her waist in a cooling attempt. This was in the days before enclosed cabs and air-conditioning. Also in the days when women wore skirts, and not jeans (at least in our area).
A friend was on an engineering business trip, in Texas, in August. Said he was doing some survey work in a rural area…woman comes out of her house first thing in the morning, coffee mug in hand, walks out to the mailbox…only in her panties…says “Good morning”. Ok then. Drives down the road and another gal only wearing cutoffs mowing the lawn. She waves. He almost moved to Texas.
