I grew up (except for summers) in NYC and its environs: from Feb 1941 Summer ’92.
During most of that period (save towards the end), it had been an expensive (yes, no getting around that), vibrant, exciting, (I hate using the multi-cultural) and inter-cultural relational/inter-relational cultural/whatever – you know what I mean; put it this way: up to just about that point I had no problem discussing treatment with any of my patients – of any color, of any educational background, in any of several badly spoken (on my part) languages. After around ’90, it all changed.
The streets (and transportation) became highly problematic (I’m using the definitions found in Wiktionary for this one) to say the least and the cost of just about everything doubled.
But then again, all around the country, things in general had started to change – and not for the better.
Wife’s sister lives with her family in Mt. Airy, VA. She recently did her one and only stint as a temp (or what ever they call them) teacher there, teaching 8th grade English. She wrote a test for the end of the week. Admin individual at the school confiscated the test, telling her “You can’t challenge them”. When asked how the students were expected to learn, reply from the same individual was “They’ll teach them in high school”. This particular school has on the order of 600 students. On Back-to-School-Night, 12 parents showed up.
That’s why my niece was teaching 5th grade remedial reading to juniors in high school in Florida.
