Hey, Florida isn’t flat, just flat near the big water parts. Heck, parts of Merritt Island, between the barrier islands like where Cocoa Beach is and the mainland, where Cocoa is, are 20 feet above sea level. The mainland is 15 feet above sea level. Here in Gainesville we’re over 150′ above sea level, and from biking across the north side from east to west, from Main Street to past I-75 to past NW 98th Street, there are hills and dips that are up to 60′ up/down and get worse the more you go west. It’s the reason Gainesville’s climate is so miserable as we’re basically above all the surrounding terrain and everything flows downhill away from us.
To those of us whose ground level is 7500 feet above sea level, those vaunted elevations don’t sound very significant. However in a flood, they are.

In the past, I have been involved in civilian concealed carry instruction. In demonstrations, I would opt to play the attacker. I would cover the 21 feet to the “victim” at an aggressive route step march pace, also engaging with a maniacal, wild eyed expression. Victim would be armed with a blue plastic gun carried concealed as they normally would. Obviously they were facing me, poised, and ready. Invariably, the best result was a tie.

Not well known but documented was the US Army’s effort to ascend the Colorado River with a military force during the Utah War. Ok, I’ve read through 10 comments and don’t see a stab or author explanation of the army steam boats. Is there accounts of Marines being transported by the army? Or have the marines always been transported by the navy? Im asking without using any Google research tools. It only make sense that ramming force would want to have boots to board, thus the army would captain and transport their own troops, thus being awarded the steamers?
Ok, I’ll answer the challenge question:

The Marine Brigade wasn’t the US Marine Corps, it was the remnant of Army control over river boats. The Steam rams were side wheel boats without guns which meant that the Main Deck, the principal deck of the vessel, which was often barely above the water line. Had a lot of space for everything except the boilers (which were on the main deck, not the boiler deck – 2nd deck). They were used to transport primarily cavalry from place to place very quickly along river networks. Steam rams were larger ships with a ramming bow that were othersiwe unarmed so that they could act as rapid deployment vehicles for power projection.

When Confederate General John Hunt Morgan raided north he was met with cavalry that surrounded him, deployed from steam rams. The gunboats provided gunfire support that could move around very quickly. THey drew almost no water so they could run on a heavy morning dew.
Calling them ‘rams’ really wasn’t very rammy. Yes, there were a few instances where the rams were used as rams to ram rammable objects, but as LL said, more transport than warship.

They had to learn from a starting point of zero. Given that, they moved at WW2 style light speed. No, the rams were not rammy at all. They could ram and if the Confederates put more ironclads or tinclads on the rivers perhaps they could have. When Vicksburg fell, The Confederate river control diminished sharply. When Chatanooga fell later in 1863, the Tennessee River opened up for the North.

Holding Captain Kelly USNR-R accountable before a courts-martial would be sufficient to me. He instigated this along with Slotkin. The CIA is a non-uniform branch of the military but UCMJ applies to them only during time of war when they are given US Army ranks.
As to the Longship? Yeah, me wants. Though I’ve heard they’re a little trippy in heavy seas as the hull is designed to flex and bend somewhat, not being overly rigid like later ships.
