Retro Artillery – the Dahlgren Light 12-pounder Boat Howitzer

It fired shell case shot and canister ammunition, specifically designed for the mountain howitzer, with a maximum range of 800 yards. The tube weighed nominally 425 pounds. In 1848, then Lieutenant Dahlgren was tasked with evaluating army mountain howitzers to determine if they could be used on small boats and then carried onshore in support of landing operations. Finding these lacking, Dahlgren designed a series of bronze, smooth-bore, muzzle-loading boat howitzers that could be mounted in ships’ launches and cutters, as well as on field carriages. By 1849, Dahlgren had made the first 12lb “Light” Boat Howitzer. This was the smallest of the first designs, meant for sloops and any other boat that could not bear the weight of a larger cannon.

All the boat howitzers were similar in design —a clean, bronze tube with a slight taper at the muzzle end, devoid of rings or other decoration. Rather than swiveling on trunnions, they featured a mounting lug or loop on the bottom of the barrel and an elevating screw running through the cascabel. Having the single mounting lug expedited the movement of the howitzer from the launch to field carriage and back. The howitzers were designed to be fired by a special bronze percussion lock, a new technology just entering naval use.

The design was so successful that Dahlgren created six sizes of Boat Howitzers in total, and they remained in demand on naval ships for decades. Some were even carried by the US Army into land combat and were known to have been fired at the First Battle of Bull Run and on the Antietam Campaign. Both sides used the boat howitzer during the war. Longer than any other muzzle-loading gun in US service, production of boat Howitzers continued into the 1870s. Dahlgren went on to design a range of large, deck-mounted, shell-firing iron cannons, crucial to the Union Navy during the Civil War, for both use aboard ship and for shore installations. With vastly increased range and accuracy, the Dahlgren gun became the Navy’s standard armament.

The smoothbore boat howitzers fired shells, shrapnel, and canister. The rifled 12-pounder fired shot and shell. Percussion primers were used in naval service, but the howitzers could also use friction primers obtained from the army. The small and light 12-pounder boat howitzers were not popular. The heavy 12-pounder howitzers were most popular at their intended jobs. In contrast, the 24-pounder boat howitzer was found to serve excellently as primary and secondary armaments on river gunboats and similar small vessels.

Big Jim Comey and the Statute of Limitations

Big Jim might have thought that he could slide under the wire and laugh at everyone from the other side, but it may not be. Former FBI Director James Comey is expected to be indicted on criminal charges in the coming days in federal court in Virginia, MSNBC reported Wednesday. The expected indictment comes on the heels of a top prosecutor resigning under pressure after opposing the filing of charges against Comey, who for years has been a target of President Donald Trump’s ire.

The full extent of the charges being prepared against Comey is unclear. Still, the sources believe that at least one element of the indictment — if it proceeds — will accuse him of lying to Congress during his testimony on September 30, 2020, about whether he authorized the leak of information.

The five-year statute of limitations on that charge will lapse next Tuesday.” FAFO

 

Violence

The collective left is more than a select few groups, because the MSM has amplified the left’s message a thousandfold. I have doubts that this ideology is as numerous as claimed, but there is no shortage of “emotional incontinents” being ignited and inspired by the confrontational, inflammatory speech.

Terroristic threats and political violence are the OPPOSITE of democracy. It’s how a select, forceful few will cow an entire community from doing what is right… until the community gets its own faster gun. This terror is evidence that the ideas are unpersuasive or weak, and must be propagated through physical control.

That’s when it promises to get bloody.

    2. I picked a school for my boys months before my arrival in New York, three years ago. All the candidates were Roman Catholic, to ensure the curriculum had some conservative elements, at least. I was not disappointed: any history classroom that features George Washington crossing the Delaware at Trenton suggests that the bases are covered. My boys learned the Pledge of Allegiance at school, and achievement I’m proud of. And we’re not only not American, but knew we would leave the US eventually.

    1. There is a Utah State Lottery every year for licensed drivers. If you’re picked by the lottery after having submitted your name, you’re in.

    2. Color me confused. In 2012 Stephen Dale Green, a honorable discharge veteran, was arrested by military police for the murder of an Iraqi family of five. The military tried him and gave him multiple life sentences with no parole. But they needed to re-try him in civilian court so they could apply for the death sentence which they said was not possible in a military court. So we sat through the civilian trial and found him guilty. Then we did the death sentence trial. At least 2 of the people with him the night of the murder had served their sentence and testified how wonderful he was, he had converted to Catholicism so a priest testified as to his regret at the murders. So back we go and had one who immediately stood up and said she will never convict for the death sentence cause he could write a book that could help other troubled young men! So we ended up with life, no parole. They transferred him to Az. max security. Committed suicide 2 years later. So if the military can impose the death penalty what was this farce that I was involved on for 3 months?
