I have Favorite Generals.

My favorite American generals are Lieut. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA (1821-1877), Maj. Gen. Smedley Darlington Butler, USMC (1881-1940), Maj. Gen. George Crook, USA (1828-1890) and Gen. George S. Patton, USA (1885-1945). There are others like (Bvt) Brig. Gen. William Lendrum (Billy) Mitchell, USAAC (1879-1936), deserves honorable mention. I interacted with Gen. Norman Schwartzkopf, Jr. (1934-1012) during the First Gulf War, and hold him in great esteem.

Historically, there are others from other nations (such as Hannibal, the great Khans, and Julius Caesar) who could be mentioned, but I’ll leave it at that for now.

To make the top list, they need to be personally courageous with a history of leading the way and setting an example, and uncompromising in their integrity, both as generals and in their personal lives. Is there anyone now in service who could make the list? The lens of history offers a broader perspective than the current view.

By the end of his career, MGN Butler had received sixteen medals, including five for heroism; he is the only Marine to be awarded the Marine Corps Brevet Medal as well as two Medals of Honor, all for separate actions. Essentially, three medals of honor for valor and service above and beyond the call of duty.

“It wasn’t until Utah Gov. Spencer Cox spelled out the transgender links to the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s assassination that the New York Times and the rest of the Hate Media and their social media offshoots finally gave up the absurd nudge-nudge-wink-wink pretense that the killer was its favorite type of villain, a MAGA gun nut.

Nope, Tyler Robinson, 22, turns out to be a hard-core leftist, Antifa devotee, and Kirk-hater who was living with his transgender boyfriend, identified as Lance Twiggs, 22, who stated, “We are riding with Biden” in a 2022 post on the social media platform Reddit.

The two men also reportedly shared a sexual fetish for “furries,” anthropomorphic animal characters, with Twiggs appearing in photos online wearing animal headdresses.

In the midst of an epidemic of left-wing political violence, you’d have to be pretty perverse not to understand the motive for assassinating Kirk.

The more recent deadly marriage of transgender and Antifa ideology is no surprise to anyone who has followed Ngo’s work for the past six years. Ngo has dubbed it “Trantifa,” and has charted the rise of the violent movement that hijacked BLM protests in the summer of 2020 and unleashed hell across the country, almost unnoticed by President Joe Biden’s FBI and media that bend over backwards not to notice leftwing terrorism or anything negative about transgenderism.

A radical leftist trans militant cult of vegans, for instance, has been accused of the murder of a US Border Patrol agent near the Canadian border in January and other murders across the country.

The assassination of Kirk has lifted the veil of silence that hung over the threat posed by these unhinged nihilists.

And after four years of Democratic pandering to the most extreme demands of transgender ideology, it was inevitable that there would be an explosion of rage after the American electorate rejected the madness last November.

** Offering the carrot has failed; it is time for the stick. The Trump administration has finally had to publicly admit that Russia has no interest in ending the war, and the “peace process” was a delusion. We shall see if the administration and our European allies can formulate and implement an aggressive enough economic effort and military aid strategy actually to impact Russia and its ability to wage war. So far, their efforts have been failures.

** Life is somewhat surreal, and by that, I mean that there are elements to life that are as real as a heart attack, but at the same time, there is an unreality to it all. I’m not complaining because I’m enjoying the ride. Based on all present indications, I’ll be living in an apartment in Washington, DC, walking distance from the Capitol Building by 2026 on a part-time basis. I don’t want to abandon the White Wolf Mine. Will I spend my lunch hours sitting at the bar at the Old Ebbitt Grill across from the Treasury building, elbow to elbow with bloated bean counters and bureaucrats, eating my preferred Walter’s Favorite sandwich (hot pastrami, muenster, coleslaw, thousand island, pumpernickel)? Please don’t count me out. If you see me there and make yourself known, I’ll buy you a Bloody Maryland (Old Ebbitt Grill classic bloody mary, Absolut Peppar, garnished with Old Bay seasoning, topped with a jumbo shrimp). Living there even part-time is better with the National Guard deployed to keep the inner city at bay.

** Not only violent criminals but repetitively violent mentally ill persons should also be “taken off the streets”; that is what locked-down mental health facilities are for. And don’t complain to me that we haven’t had plenty of time to build them, especially in those states where criminal incarceration of the mentally ill is frowned upon. (As it should be; I have never seen a violently mentally ill person get better or become less violent from doing time in prison.) The voters, politicians, and the political parties running those states that have had lots of time (decades)and lots of money to address this problem have failed. They need to take a new look at involuntary incarceration of violent mentally ill offenders, and put their money where their mouth is. In California, despite voter support for such action, the legislature has historically failed to fund these programs adequately. It is inexcusable.

** Biologics and Synthetics (Wall Street Journal) “U.S. population growth will slow to a crawl over the next few decades as fertility rates decline and net immigration shrinks because of stricter enforcement, the Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday. ** Tomorrow we shall see if free speech isn’t free from consequences. Congress is filing a PRIVILEGED motion to censure Ilhan Omar and remove her from her committees. This will force a vote. Half measures are not enough anymore. Ilhan Omar is not compatible with our American values. She has no place in Congress and should be admonished.

** ARMY STANDARDS UPDATE | Women can no longer wear lipstick or colored nail polish, and men must keep their hair length within 2 inches as part of the Army’s tightening and clarification of appearance and grooming standards while in uniform. The new 14-page directive, published Monday, covers hair, nails, makeup, and earrings. The update does not address shaving requirements.

Launched in June 1893, the 159-foot Gustave Zédé was the first submarine to discharge a torpedo while submerged. After many corrections, the design took part in naval exercises in 1898.

During the exercises that followed, the Gustave Zédé torpedoed the ironclad battleship Magenta twice—the first time when the battleship was at anchor, the second while she was underway. Edouard Lockroy’s description of the event—he was on board the Magenta at the time—appeared in the Paris newspaper Le Matin and was republished around the world:

The eyes of all on board were fixed on the sea. Officers and men stood watching the crest of the waves, and every minute there were exclamations as someone fancied he had seen the submarine boat.     1. You forgot to mention eating outside at The Sequoia on the Georgetown waterfront. There was a time when the area was safe, then came the needed purge patrols. I deem it safe for now but home rule has to disappear for good.

      1. I’ve eaten at Ebbitt’s once and would enjoy eating there again should I ever need to go to DC again. Would be even more enjoyable to have lunch with you there.

    2. #2 there were over a dozen super propellor fighters ready to enter full production by the end of the war. Some were early prop/jet hybrids. But by late 1944 it became apparent that existing production lines would be sufficient because the Axis was singing its swan song.

I like raw oysters and they have the choice of putting their own cocktail sauce or the more traditional champagne mignonette on them. It’s a pity that one requires an army to keep diners safe. I agree that the legacy of Marion Berry needs to be wiped out tooth and nail once and for all in Washington DC. Move the inner city from there to Baltimore, where they’ll be more at home.

    1. I want to be able to send my ten grandchildren to college, trade school, or wherever they need to launch their careers. I’m not anti-university, but the course of study has to end with a marketable trade or it’s a waste of money. The lines blur between profession and trade for some people, but ultimately, you need skills that people are willing to pay for, regardless of how you acquire them. Thus, I’m willing to throw myself on the pyre for the sake of my posterity.

Aside from being educated on important matters, especially within STEM, dad said to me, “College is a high-class work permit, tells a prospective employer that you can start something and finish it successfully.” Changed my entire attitude about higher education…but he also said, “Never stop learning and educating yourself”…which has been my trajectory (mainly to not let him down)..

  5. I don’t know if I’m epically slow and this is one of those “everybody knows” things, but something occurred to me the other day. It’s about the plague we have of crimes being committed by people who should have been stuck in jail until they rotted. Think of the guy who killed that Ukrainian woman, Iryna Urutska, in Charlotte, NC, – the one who had 14 court decisions against him.

    Is this a scheme where the paper shows they’re saving costs by reducing the prison expenses but the money is being funneled into kickbacks to the judges, local politicos, and other corrupt locals? IOW, is it NOT all about the supposed kindness bestowed on the killer but about the money being fed back to judges and whomever?

    1. I don’t think that it’s about financial kickbacks to judges for releasing hardened killers back onto the streets. I’m not “new” in that world and haven’t seen anything like that, certainly not systemically. It’s the liberal do-gooder thing at work. Institutional men and women are easily identifiable and need to remain in prison. I applaud President Trump’s move to offshore our warehoused prisoners because they can be kept in some third-world hellhole, much less expensively than they can here.

      1. Done by the same people who believe replacing beat officers with pop-psyche “counselors” would actually work in the real world. Self-delusion is a powerful thing, especially to those employing tortured logic.

Do you know what other administration/government/group released all the criminals and insane people to create an environment so dangerous that the whole ball of wax had to be ‘nationalized?’ The friggin German actual NAZIs.   6. Perhaps not my favorite General, but worth honorable mention is Jonathan “Skinny” Wainwright, who was served a poo sandwich by MacArthur, did the best he could with it and was later criticized by Dugout Doug for his actions.

    1. Wainwright and Chenault were both very good generals. I don’t think they rise to the likes of Forrest or Patton, but to some extent (as Patton pointed out), you have to be at the right place at the right time to show your stuff. General Crook learned his trade over time and by the time the Apache Wars were upon us, he knew what he was doing. Miles took credit for Crook’s work but that’s always the way. History sifts these things out.

      I’m not anti-MacArthur, but if you bought him for what he was worth and sold him for what he thought he was worth, you’d be richer than Musk or Ben Gunn.

      Grant. The man just fought. And he understood logistics like most generals of the time didn’t. He was a master of all things tactical and strategic. And he just… fought. Patton and Rommel would have gotten along with him. Yeah, a drunk during peacetime between the Mexican-American War and the Civil War because he found he didn’t belong, but not a drunk in command as portrayed. The History Channel did a mini-series on him that was extremely good and showed him very well, warts and all. Damn, love Sherman. Got screwed over by historians, of course, but the man could and did fight. And was a decent president who was overwhelmed by the new federalism and the post-war douchenozzles in government.

      Curtis LeMay with his ‘screw you guys, I’m killing Krauts/Japs’ attitude’ is the way to handle an air war. None of this polite crap that got us into serious vehicle and material trouble in Viet Nam. Bomb them back past the stone age is the only way to strategically utilize an air force without modern extremely precision-guided weapons. And even today, one of the true successes in Viet Nam was the B-52 Arclight, where you just dropped a poop-load of bombs all over everywhere and remove whole sections of the map from existence.

  7. Dittos on General Crook. I became a student of Arizona history, the Apache wars and seeking out battlegrounds shortly after migrating to the state in 1977. Near the end of the US Indian wars, Nelson “Bearcat” Miles came on strong. I haven’t done a lot of research on him yet. I’m only 80, so I still have a lot of time left.
    Amazing how all the twisted left wing ghouls are coming out of the closet cheering the assassination of Christian and free speech champion, Charlie Kirk. They are discovering that, unlike Great Briton, we have free speech in this country and they have free will from God to express their vitriolic hate. They are also finding out what FAFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! means.

Thus we have sympathizers inviting dragsters to make converts in public schools. A P/T local nightclub had a drag show back 22 just as we were making our exodus to TX. What was once a one stoplight Cowboy town, where my wife was raised, now not only hosts a world famous “Round Up”, but many other entertainment events year round. Including scheduled BLM protests and ” Pride” parades.

    Generals: I am a huge Patton fan!
    Honorable mention: General Creighton Abrams. Though his legacy was tainted by Viet Nam, in WW2 he was a force to be reckoned with. General George Patton said of him: “I’m supposed to be the best tank commander in the Army, but I have one peer—Abe Abrams. He’s the world champion.”

    1. There are a large number of generals who can be put in the same category as General Abrams. We’re not talking admirals here specifically, but if we were, I’d put Admiral Willis A. (Chin) Lee into the category of greatness. Adm. Chester Nimitz deserves to be remembered as being great IMHO. Adm. Ernest King was a jerk, but he was also great. The difference between being great and being exceptionally great may simply be the times and the circumstances. Clearly, all of those I identified were willing to take a calculated risk – and had the stones to buck the system when required.

      2. Lee, most definitely. “I’m going to turn this giant ship into a super-sniper platform. Firing individual guns, he achieved more than others firing groups of shots.

        Nimitz was definitely one of the best. His comment on December 8th, when his carrier came into Pearl Harbor “In 10 years, Japanese will only be spoken in Hell” almost came true if we hadn’t dropped the bomb and if we either completely blockaded and bombed Japan or invaded or both.

        And… Stephen Decatur, ending rank of Commodore (before all the really silly admiral ranks came around.) Responsible at a very young age and as a naval Lt for the cutting out and firing of the USS Philadelphia in Tripoli Harbor. Balls, the man had balls. Balls so big and heavy they could be used to anchor a super tanker during a hurricane. And he knew how to lead and knew how to tell others to ‘F Off.’ Any naval officer who patterns his behavior after Decatur can’t be half bad.

  10. L.L. You are heckuva historian , I couldn’t even name more than a few Generals . Even going into Officer’s Country or Wardroom on a ship made me sweat , for no good explainable reason . Interacting with officers outside of those confines , briefs ,debriefs, bridge watchstanding , Quarterdeck, Pways, topside , having a smoke ….no problem . If I had to judge a good General /Admiral , I would ask the men who served under them what they thought . I only know one Capt who retired as an Admiral , and he was the greatest C.O. I ever had , we interacted on a very personal level , he walked the decks day or night and would strike up conversations about all kinds of shit . He liked cigars and would smoke out on the big comfy chairs on the bridge wings , and invite me to have a smoke (me-cigarettes) with him on occassion . He also offered me his old newspapers from all over the place after he was through with them . It was my pleasure, because of his cool nature, to make him (and the ship) look good , and made sure the men under my lead understood that this “Old Man” knew what the fuck he was doing , and had are backs , this man set the tone with ease and was easy to follow . I’ll stop there before I go off on crazy sea stories . His name was Ronald Route .

    Army Dress Code- lose the fuckin BDU’S in public , they look dumpy, disheveled, and unprofessional. They make borderline guys look obese, and fat guys look like blimps , it is a shit look . At work..okay , transiting to and from work..okay , at airports, ballgames,state fairs oh fuck no!!!

    1. The standing rule used to be that work uniforms were ok on base or “in the field training, or fighting.” ANYWHERE else the Class B (or Navy Dress Blues when in doubt). Fat people don’t look so fat when wearing camo…and I think that is why it devolved the way it did. The standing reason has been, “We’re in a Global War on Terror,” so they can strike anywhere – thus cammys are justified. The Navy has to get away from camouflage uniforms unless you’re a SEAL, a Sea Bee, or are serving in some sort of combat role where you’re likely to be shot at, supporting the Marine Corps (Chaplains, doctors, and nurses in MASH-type situations, CASEVAC crews, or logistics people supporting the same). I made the joke when they came out with the blueberry cammys that it was so if you went overboard they didn’t have to bother looking for you.

      1. Well , I extended my comment to the army , and them wearing them “out in town/at events/ and while on travel orders” , they used to wear class A’s . We were told after OKC to travel in civies, and not stand out as military members . I think guardsmen and reservists , “spit on the ground”, would wear their BDU’s to Walmart if they could even off duty . I grew up wearing dungarees , and coveralls at work , and we could go to work and back to home wearing the dungarees , not the coveralls. I have traveled in dress whites during a “report no later than” with not much proceed time , the only fall back was every veteran in the airport bar saw me and bought me drinks , the sky caps at SFO gave me a golf cart ride directly to my boarding gate ,I mean right to the tunnel. upgraded me to first class , I was hammered to a certain extent , but not that bad. Sat next to a nice female lawyer from San Fran , became friends to never meet again . Adventures…we’ve all had them , some we remember , some we forget , some we would like to forget . Trump threw together a “pass in review” that looked like hammered shit . I know you hate ’em (Russkies) and Xi too , but their victory day celebrations were squared away , precision, and were impressive . We could do one better , but truthfully , it would take hand picked persons, resolved of all other duties, to pull it off . Other than stand in ranks or the occasional color guard we don’t march after boot camp . (and it showed , wtf were they playing AC/DC ?)

        Trump…God Bless him…..his attempt at a pass in review , staged impromptu, sucked , out of step, out of height line ……etc . To say the least , military bearing was lacking . These displays have little to do with war fighting , at which we excel , but it was lackluster to say the least . If we are to continue doing an annual military parade we need to start practicing now . I look forward to a better showing next year , this year’s was a fucking embarrassment .

In it, the author describes how after the surrender at Appomattox, many Union officers went into the Southern camps looking for old friends from before the war. One was George Meade, who went to see his old friend Robert Lee.     He was raised in a Latter Day Saint family and community. Knowing many LDS in that area, I can feel their shame and sorrow one of theirs did this horrible deed.
    While not accepting their religious beliefs, I do know a lot about them. In their belief system, murder is among things that cannot be atoned. That means, in their faith, he will dwell in hell for eternity after the leaves this life; hopefully after facing a firing squad.
    May his parents siblings and their community find some peace and solace.

  17. I said it once; I’ll say it again (and I don’t particularly give a hoot who takes offense): “I don’t believe there should be any rank above (perhaps) O-3, tops, in the auxilliary services (lawyers, clergy, and medical.”
    If a people do good work, retain them at that rank with moderate increases in pay every 5 years to keep them from going civ and special bonuses for retirement after 25 years.

      1. The rules would have to change, Boron. I don’t have a problem with reducing people in rank when they become reserves (lower pay grade), but there are high year tenure rules in place for rank and rate that require people to promote or be removed from the active and reserve service. If you lock them at O-3 or E-6, for example, you need to remove high year tenure. Or simply separate them, but you wouldn’t have a lot of reserves. Which is ok too if that’s your plan.

        Doctors, dentists and experienced nurses are mostly at O-4 or O-5 so they’re all gone. The same is true with JAGs and chaplains. No warrant officers, and very little experience in the reserves. Is that what you envision? Yes, I’m challenging you.

          Accumulation of/increase in rank becomes the (only) object rather than assuring the job is done properly/correctly.
          I believe rank among the fighting force is necessary: the auxilllary component; not so.
          Only one reason IMHO for a dentist to remain in the service: he is a patriot who wishes to continue to be “of service to his country”.
          Were the pay (and extras) equal to civilian life, there’d be far more dentists with no problem of retention.; you’d have to shovel them off your front doorstep.
          The service provides the perfect opportunity to provide excellent dentistry for the front-line man (and his family) by the creation of an annual travelling (dental) review panel (not his on-base superior) vs. the courts in civilian life; the superior (rank) is not always an objective reviewer.
          I hope I’ve answered your question.

          1. Having been a reservist, there is a system in place that is military, which means that it’s arbitrary. There is little room for “fair” because its not. Limiting promotion and reduction in rank or going on half-pay as they used to here and still do in some countries is a way to thin the cost. Retaining talent has nothing to do with any of that, but the system isn’t set up to do that. Setting a cap on reserves at O-3 (reducing an O-5 to an O-3 when they enter the reserves) and possibly E-6 for enlisted doesn’t solve the problem.

          2. The place I’m looking at is still the auxilliary services, not front line people (+ perhaps supply people) and we’re talking about pay (plus bonuses where necessary), not rank.
            For the auxilliary services, I think rank destroys the mission.

  18. One of the things I admire about General Bedford Forest beyond his military campaigns is his conversion to Christianity later in life, renouncing racism, support for slavery, support for the Ku Klux Klan.
    I read once a former officer he knew, met him and was astonished at the change in his life.
