1. California funding request – I am reminded of the line about giving tax money to politicians is like giving smack to a junkie.
   London – hope you have guides familiar with the current terrain.

   1. In London? I normally have a security group with me when I’m outside of the US on business. Not a large group but a couple of people.

   I believe that you can still have a Sgian Dubh if you are in a kilt. Though nowadays in the UK mostly a blunt blade or just a handle. Can you claim Scottish ancestry? I can, do you need to be part of the clan? Gold or silver accepted.

   As someone who collects, makes and occasionally sells knives their laws seem crazy.

   I have at least one knife on me anytime and in my part of rural Australia nearly everyone does.

   Southern media is currently running stories against legal gun owners. The main story is about one person owning over 400 rifles etc. NO of mention that he has never done anything wrong.

   1. The people who worry about one man owning 400 rifles are strangely unbothered by one man owning over 400 radio stations. Or someone owning hundreds of newspapers. Or banks. Funny, that.

         I own a Sgian Dubh, custom-made, razor-sharp, and I own a kilt from many years ago when I lived in Scotland, but it doesn’t fit. I had a 32″ waist then and, well, not now. To carry a sgian dubh, one must wear the kilt, and I don’t.

   1. There’s a knife and kitchen gadgets store in Freeport, Maine (outlet store town, and home of LL Bean, for you non-New Englanders) that sells used knives confiscated by our gloruilous TSA. Owner has a relative who somehow has access to the stuff TSA seizes. 🤨

   2. Yes on the tank. Pretty obv. As to the knife boxes there was a scandal when people started stealing them. I doubt that anyone uses them. They’re more of a political statement – like a rainbow flag or women dressing up as vaginas.

   1. Me too. It’s better if you can fly private because it allows you to bring work tools with you without having to bother with people. It’s also good if you travel and have the chops to carry a diplomatic pouch (which can be any container with a diplomatic seal).

      1. I just printed a few on my computer, assuming I ever fly again.

   1. Most of the US military equipment works. While the armed services were encouraged to rot under Biden, it will switch back to leaner and meaner.

      Norman Borlaug’s wheat. He developed what we call wheat these days in the middle of the 20th century. It’s genetically very different from the wheat our ancestors ate, einkorn wheat, and looks it. The “amber waves of grain” have been replaced by shorter stalks that don’t wave as much and the gluten in the flour is chemically different from einkorn wheat gluten.

      I think he won a Nobel prize for that. He undoubtedly saved or enabled the lives of billions of people and in terms of pure numbers it’s hard to top that, no matter how wretched that “wheat-like food stuff” is and no matter how many people have problems with celiac or related syndromes from it. That’s a “first world problem”. If you starve to death in childhood, you don’t get celiac later in life. Which, BTW, has no relation to the fact that we now get “Gluten Free!” tags on stuff in the grocery store that have never had gluten in them.

         Over a decade ago, an individual intensively involved in wheat and farming and I were having breakfast discussing the problems of gluten, celiac and other factors associated with today’s wheat. He pointed out Borlaug’s wheat and then went into the hybridization of that wheat that increased the gluten content even more than what Borlaug developed. The idea was to reduce waste, that’s the long stalks or regular wheat, and to provide more weight to the kernel. That’s where the problem lies. My part of Idaho is surrounded by 4 or 5,000 acre wheat fields.

         1. I agree that hybridization and genetic modification of wheat is causing gluten allergies. I remember when a loaf of bread might last a week before becoming a science experiment in a bag. It now lasts months on the shelf before changing colors. In addition to highly modified kernels, what other ingredients are added to bread that causes a gluten-allergy-like reaction?
            I had weight loss surgery years ago (gastric sleeve) and find that regular bread makes me uncomfortable unless toasted. However, a few brands of thin-sliced “keto” bread is much easier on my stomach. Coincidence?
            Safe travels in London. If I were you and unable to carry a proper weapon anywhere outside the US, I’d get the added personal protection. Think of it as insurance. Costs up front but if needed, invaluable.

   3. Do not discount the damage that flouridated water has done to Americans. Increase in hypothyroidism, as flouride is used to treat hyperthyroidism because it kills the thyroid. And what does the thyroid do? Well, it helps regulate the immune system. What’s an allergy? Well, it’s the body’s wildly over-response to the body’s reaction to a stimulus of some sort or another.

      So, well, gluten has become an allergy because everyone’s running really bad thyroid levels from being exposed to too much flouride. At the same time as an increase in gluten allergies are increases in peanut and treenut allergies and other food allergies. And environmental allergies (which can also be linked to… whole house air conditioners but they’d better not ever take my AC away from me.)

      And… there’s something to be said for having ‘free range’ children who get dirty and do things and go everywhere. Their immune system is exposed to things that the overly protected child will never be exposed to.

      The GMO may be a thing, but RFKJr is very correct in saying that Flouride is a major issue in America’s lack of health.

   4. As to the US military being at war, they’ve been continually at war since Pancho Villa’s time. Some of it was low-level intensity, but the men kept dying. From chasing Mexican ‘Revolutionaries’ to WWI to all the little ‘banana’ wars and the continued suppression of islamic militants in the Philippines to actions in China (like the movie “The Sand Pebbles”) to ‘advisors’ and ‘pilots who ‘left’ military service’ (wink, wink…) and then to WWII and past. Constant flow of low-level to high-level to low-level to high-level intensity conflict.

   Interesting is the beach strip is 80% burned, with an ocean 100 yards away! All are on septic from the 40’s and 50’s bungalows that used to be there before someone built a $10m place from a scrape-off with 5ft side yard separation. Yeah, new houses ain’t happening. New power poles and lines run the road now but he still has no water or power at his place (a little ways up on the hill from said power lines)…a month later. 10. At the way things are going, the next large disagreement in Europe will be between Russia and the Muslims that took over the rest of Europe. It won’t be pretty, but best if the United States takes the back seat. Being a civilian in Europe – once again – will suck.

11. I was going through customs at Windsor a few years ago and a glitch required me to get out of the car and talk to someone at the counter.
    I could not understand what the problem was, but while I was waiting I went to the bathroom, pulled out my switchblade and tossed it in the lidded trashbin where it went “Clunk”, signaling that it was the only thing in there and I was the last person near it.
    Fortunately nothing became of it and I was sent on my way.
    I went through last Christmas and the young lady asked if I had any guns.
    I said “Ma’am. I’m an American. I have lots of guns”. She smiled and asked if I had any on me and I said no and she said “Bonjour”.

    When you mention that you looked at moving to S. Whidbey Island ( I did note your using the older spelling), I am kind of surprised.
    Considering most of the Island South of the Ebey Prairie, both politically and physically lean to the left.
    It is a beautiful place, but I don’t think you would have liked the rain….and the politics here would have really been frustrating for you, but…maybe not, you did live in California for a while.
    I live in the rain shadow on the North end, and although I love the Island and it being a bit remote, I hate that the Puget sound counties control the state.
    I was pulling for the eastern counties to join the Great State of Idaho confederation, but I knew it was a pipe dream, As was the State of Jefferson.
    Except for the rain, did you consider the Peninsula at all?

    1. Jack, I like the rain and the climate had an appeal. I could have used the base facilities at NAS Whidbey. It is a drive, but not an extreme drive. Yes, I did look at Sequim closely and that general area. We looked at some homes there. Port Angeles seemed a bit run down. We looked at Black Point and the area—homes on the Sound or, more appropriately, Hood Canal. I looked hard at the area circa 2004-5, so quite a while ago now and Washington politics didn’t seem so extreme. Maybe it was and I didn’t know it.

       1. I’ve been here for 25 years, when I moved here it wasn’t so extreme. Things really changed during the reign of King Insley.
          Now I realize my question about moving here….is based on how it is now versus 20 years ago.
