DE-ORBIT!

(h/t Claudio and others) (article) In a remarkable statement Thursday, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said the International Space Station should be deorbited “as soon as possible.”

This comment from Musk will surely set off a landmine in the global space community, with broad implications. And it appears to be no idle comment from Musk, who sometimes indulges in deliberately provocative posts on the social media network X that he owns.

However, that does not seem to be the case here.

“It is time to begin preparations for deorbiting the @Space_Station. It has served its purpose. There is very little incremental utility. Let’s go to Mars,” Musk wrote at midday on Thursday.

This original statement was somewhat ambiguous. Last July, NASA awarded Space X an $843 million contract to modify a Dragon spacecraft as a propulsive vehicle to safely guide the aging space station into the Pacific Ocean in 2030. So, in some sense, preparations are already underway to shut down the laboratory.

Not a German tank/tank destroyer. Armed with the 90mm Panzerabwehrkanone 57, which is a low-pressure anti-tank cannon that uses HEAT rounds. Eleven prototypes were built, and they were different variants of the base tank with varying armament configurations. The engine was in the front (like a Merkva) to aid crew survivability.

    1. Yes it is. It has visual elements that are common to Russian aircraft of the era. The Russians likely stole plans for Fokker’s designs and incorporated them.

      1. Not designed by Fokker.
        Designed by Frederick (Frits) Koolhoven whose company was the second largest in Holland after Fokker.
        This design was manufactured in England after the German invasion. Supposedly the resemblance to the Russian plane is due to a redesign for a larger Wright Cyclone engine from USA as his engine plant was now in occupied Europe.
        The Russians also used a licensed copy the same engine for some of their planes.
        Still the Russians stealing ideas or plans is still perfectly possible.

    how did the Ukraine go from an agrarian backwater to a major up-to-date (electronics/computer-driven) fighting force in just a couple of years.
    who paid for the equipment and training? who’s paying for the propaganda machine?     2. The Russians invested in Ukraine for good and obvious reasons. When the Soviet Union broke up, Ukraine went its own way and the Russians gave them their share of nuclear weapons. At the time of Ukraine’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine held the third largest nuclear arsenal in the world, including an estimated 1,900 strategic warheads, 176 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and 44 strategic bombers. By 1996, Ukraine had returned all of its nuclear warheads to Russia in exchange for economic aid and security assurances. In December 1994, Ukraine became a non-nuclear weapon state party to the 1968 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT).     1. Historically, underground banking (or Hawalla or Chinese Flying Money or Chit Banking) came West with the Crusades. The method was used by the Knights Templar to move value (because in that system the money rarely actually moves) between the Temples in Europe and the Temple in Jerusalem and back. Today one of the most common uses of these systems is with the Hasidic Jews and their international diamond network.

  6. Germany needs to start a draft & rearm because of Russia? Are we talking about the same Russia? The one stuck in the Ukraine for the last few years?
    In the last century the USA sent troops to fight & die helping contain the Germans, we left over One Hundred Thousand Americans buried in Europe dealing with Germany.
    Then we left troops there and said “don’t do that” and for the last 80 years they have acceptable neighbors for the rest of Europe… Germany changing doesn’t really look good..

I personally don’t care whether Germany rearms or imports a million savage military age, unmarried males from the Middle East to flesh out their barren society that can’t come close to replacing itself. Other than changing aircraft in Munich or Frankfurt, I doubt that I will visit Germany again unless there is a Turk that I need to interview. Based on my experience there are far more Turkish flags flying over German than German flags.

  7. From my viewpoint, the International Space Station is one major uh-oh from wiping out a crew. After two decades of use, how ever many micro meteorite holes, and general wear and tear, it’s served it’s purpose. I have a feeling many scientists are wary of visiting.

    1. Your concerns are shared by Elon Musk, which is why he recommended that we de-orbit it sooner than planned. Unfortunately, there are a lot of rice bowls connected to federal gravy up there in orbit, and those rice bowls are broken when the ISS is.

        Always about the money with those people, who’s greed completely blocks all ability of “doing the right thing” and common sense.

        1. Many of them are creatures of the bureaucracy, and they don’t think they could find a do-nothing or a no-show job (money for nothing and chicks for free) outside of their government sinecure. Deorbiting the space station will create that situation for many of them.

      2. The problem with data on the ISS isn’t a lack of it; it’s the sheer volume and funding hyperfocus leads to the four blind men and the elephant. Give an engineering team the problem of deorbiting the thing as a whole, and they may be the only ones not focusing on how to isolate the air leaks, or how to patch and limp it along for more experiments and cycles of astronauts. Instead, they’re looking at the structural integrity of each module and the whole…

        Yeah, that doesn’t fill me with warm fuzzies. G-d look after fools, drunkards, the United States of America, and those poor astronauts who signed up to Do Science, not to die for it.

  8. Having personally been in DRJIM’s lair, I need to point out your depiction isn’t accurate. The lair is far more cluttered. As to what he can accomplish in his lair, that is beyond my limited understanding.
    So long as a treat is offered, Banner will do what is needed.
    Germany, and many other European countries, should bring back military conscription of all able body persons residing in their country. That would lead, IMO, to mass outward migration of their immigrants.

After they invade the place, doing much needed land leveling demo, then it’s onto acquisition, clean up, and construction of Gaz-A-Lago – the latest Trump International big beautiful resort…with an actual working dock. Included in package deals are; private beachside bungalows and adult beverages with culturally appropriate snacks brought chaise side by attendants (jobs baby, all about the jobs for generating self esteem whilst lowering 7th Century tendencies).
