There is a reluctance to wish people a happy day in some quarters, but here at VM, there is no antipathy to the great explorer Cristóbal Colón, who made a great effort to pull back the curtain and sail west.

(Space.com) The present posture of not planning for in-space rescue and not having responsive in-space rescue capabilities needs to be addressed before the need for a rescue materializes … not after. The U.S. has the money to establish space rescue capabilities and to do so with a sense of urgency. The article argues for the capacity. Since SpaceX is the only game in town, it would require a dedicated launch vehicle just sitting on the pad with a rescue capsule/vehicle specifically equipped. It wouldn’t do anything but sit there waiting to be fueled…which isn’t the best idea because that’s not what launching boosters were designed to do. It would require something new to be created, and you wouldn’t need Boeing to build it. They’d overcharge and underdeliver. Given that, what is the way forward?

Rowling, could now “paper her walls,” as she put it, with the death threats she has received (the anonymous death threat has become, alas, the highest form of argument) after she said something that only a few years ago would not have been thought worth saying—namely, that a female is born, not made?

One of the other part-time guys was this Syrian called Sam who was NOT an evil human being, actually, but he was pretty much a caricature of the “slick” Middle Eastern wannabe lothario with the cheap sportscar and pornostache. In re in-space rescue. LL – I ask from your (and other’s) prior experience: was there a universal dock for DSRVs, especially between various generations and countries’ underwater vessels?
I could imagine not having universal dock adapters would be the first issue. Look at what’s happening on the ISS, with having to move and share docking ports because of Boeing, older generation connectors, and the Russian docks.
As a compare/contrast, I see keeping an ICBM in a silo for years, but that’s such a special-purpose vehicle. The variability of a rescue mission, the number to be rescued, orbital mechanics of the rescuers and rescue-ees, would complicate having a standby rescue operation launching from Earth
Now, break the problem into two parts – keep something unmanned available in fixed orbit and a quick-reaction manned launch-to-orbit to that in-orbit vehicle. In-orbit vehicle has large fuel tanks for orbital changes, solar array to run heaters and computers on standby. Frequent resupply and testing missions (SpaceX?). Modular docking adapter. I was thinking of the “dogbone” wrenches used on bicycles, with a bunch of potential ports all on one hub. Agencies/companies that want recovery services/contracts must submit a fully-functional dock for the module. Emergency “bubble” suits with O2 and maybe a little food/water.
The in-orbit vehicle becomes the return-to-Earth vehicle. The launch-to-orbit stays at the station, or is disposed of, and could be a standby vehicle as well.
For a name: Vacuum Recovery and Rescue Services (VRRS).
You’d need to keep it in a low orbit which would require regular boosts to prevent full re-entry. A spacecraft in distress could drop orbit but getting to L-1, for example, might not be possible. There are many options and all carry a hefty price tag. Do the Russians and Chinese pay (rescue insurance) or do we ignore their distress? There is no need for a universal hatch unless there’s a downpayment. Additionally, the evolution of launch vehicles (today, as opposed to the American decline) would require continual upgrades to whatever sits in the silo.

OK, more seriously, you could park something in a very high orbit and warm it up for rescue when needed. There is no need for a crew. Bubble space suits and other autonomous rescue equipment to get them to the vehicle if their docking system failed could be carried in their spacecraft. I think that’s the answer. At langrange, there isn’t a lot of space junk to worry about, and getting down to wherever wouldn’t take long for the robotic rescue craft.

If you stick with the current ISS-style mating ring, then, yes, most space rated vehicles now conform to the same standard docking collars/adaptors. The issue, of course, is environmental fittings for everyone’s space suits. In the US, we have what SpaceX uses, Boeing uses for their Star/StayLiner and what NASA uses. Dunno about India, Red China, Russia, and anyone else is using for existing or potential space suit fittings.
IMHO, we need to consider the Boeing products to be past “use by” date and move forward to the SpaceX products. I realize that they soak the taxpayers, but that’s not a justification to keep funding them.
Same with the LockMart Orion capsule. That has a heat shield that isn’t safe to use.

In the Air Force, homosexuals and bisexuals were given choice assignments and straight guys and gals picked up the slack in various less desirable positions. For example, one very early 80s Air Force thought was to put all the well built women NCO crew chiefs in fighter squadron assignments to keep guys thinking straight. That failed along the same lines as the Air Force Chief of Staff advising commanders to give promotions to those who were not the best and that the best would not mind being passed over for one promotion cycle. By the 90s, the push to put unqualified women, minorities and homosexuals into promotion slots was obvious. Today, we see the results of those bad programs.
In the mid 80s at Mather AFB, an aerial gunner who was not a cracker jack received spot promotions leading him to Master Sergeant well ahead of the other gunners who were really good. A few years later, that gunner was investigated, tried and convicted for pedophilia. The bosses were the ones who pushed him up the ladder and could have not been unaware.
So yes, the push was there and for those who drank lots of coffee, just listened and read multiple news sources instead of just the Air Force Times could see the trajectory both in the military and in the States.

Off today’s subject, I would like your opinion as to Gen. Miley saying he is afraid Trump would recall him to active duty so he could be court martialed for his actions (a lot of folks say treasonous) while under Trump. Especially in question, in my mind are the 2 calls he made ( “assuring our most formidable adversary that he would give advance warning if the US were ever going to attack the communist nation.” HT/Gateway Pundit) among the more serious issues.
Could this in fact happen? In my mind, I’ve always felt those calls were a treasonous action by any officer of our armed services., but that’s my thoughts.

I think that it’s treason. I also believe that it’s in the past, and dredging it up as a person on the enemy’s list would do more harm than good to the Trump Administration. Recall that he didn’t lock up Hillary despite the calls from his supporters to do so.

Not homosexuals and such, not in the 1980s. I was in the Air Force then and was honorably discharged just before the stop-loss order came down after Saddam got froggy. I remember periodic homo-hunts by OCI right up to the end, and was questioned about a couple of people at different times. They were good troops, especially the one female ET, so I didn’t voice what I suspected, but no one hesitated to drop a dime on dirtbags — anything to get them out as quickly as possible. Clinton brought in “Don’t ask, don’t tell” as official policy, but I suppose it was unofficial among a large minority or small majority of the USAF enlisted that I knew. Now it would be different on a ship, and unless they were very discreet, their partner was not also on the same ship, and they were celibate at sea like everyone else. Same with an Army in the field. I love women, but I’m still unconvinced they ought to be on warships, and certainly not subs. Unless perhaps they’re all-female crews? But then who will open the jars?

It was on the horizon when I worked for the government in a mainstream role. When I left that and went into the ghost business, there wasn’t much of it, and what there was, I mocked, and they tolerated me, likely because they feared me personally. Then I went into sort of a science drone business where that didn’t intrude. Then I went into where I am now, which is sort of a parallel universe. That’s the only way I can describe it. I live far from civilization and interact with the mainstream in a tangential way that is not DEI in any way – as a matter of choice. The people I interact with are much like myself and I remain in that bubble. I don’t need to earn at this point to live comfortably so I’m not pushed into those situations. I will likely end my life in this mode – whenever it ends.
