** Wolf Naming Contest—Flagstaff, AZ—Yes, there are wolves in these hills. I live a 70-minute drive from Flagstaff, but there are more wolves here than there are in the city environs. I’ve spoken to the cattle ranchers who run their herds on the summer mountain range, and predation from wolves is not as great as from lions. They named the wolf “Hope,” and they’re hippies, so they don’t understand wolf behavior or that there is a difference between domestic dogs, coyotes, and wolves.

** There are no vegans at the top of the food chain.

** The Capitol Police admitted under oath that they invited protesters into the US Capitol building on January 6 and then, once inside, arrested them for insurrection and trespassing. That sounds like entrapment to me, but it should be expected in an era of lawfare.

** Veep Candidate Tim Walz said that he never went to Iraq, BUT he has been to downtown Minneapolis, which is essentially the same thing. Ok, I take his point. Baghdad in the Heartland – who’d have thought 30 years ago?

** Stuck in Space—Next time, take a SpaceX. In the military, there was a philosophy regarding parachuting—you rig it, you ride it. They must put an extra seat in the capsule for the Boeing or Rocketdyne CEO. I thought that should be true of the Space Shuttle, too. I feel that way about Senators, Beltway Bandits, and Wall Street Mogul’s families, too. If the front is good enough for me, it’s good enough for favored heir Sally or Sammy.

** President Donald Trump ridiculed Pedo Joe Biden‘s mental and physical state during a meandering interview with Elon Musk (my favorite African American) on X Spaces. (Mail) “Barely vegetative?” Well, yes, what else is new?

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has revitalized NATO, not unlike what President Xi Jinping is doing in China.

The SAAB Swordfish Maritime Patrol Aircraft is a state-of-the-art platform for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Built on the Bombardier Global 6000 business jet airframe, the Swordfish combines a business jet’s long-range capabilities and high-speed performance with advanced maritime patrol capabilities. It features a range of over 4,000 nautical miles and an endurance of more than 11 hours, making it suitable for extended missions. The aircraft is powered by two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines, providing a top speed of Mach 0.89 and a service ceiling of 51,000 feet.

The Swordfish has an advanced sensor suite, including a Selex ES Seaspray 7500E active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, which offers 360-degree coverage and superior maritime detection capabilities. The aircraft also features a FLIR Systems Star SAFIRE 380-HLD electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor for high-resolution imaging in various conditions. The Swordfish is equipped with sonobuoy launchers and a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) for anti-submarine warfare and can carry lightweight torpedoes.     Wolves – my wife and I saw three Dingoes on Fraser Island beach yesterday morning. They come down to beach comb on low tide. Asiatic Wolf / wild dog that has been in Australia for about 12 000 years.

    Did see wild wolves in Canada during one trip years back.

      1. I bought half a basket of food (no meat) from Walmart today and paid just shy of $200. Not composed meals, just vegetables, apples, a melon, milk, eggs, etc. And yet people shout, “Go with the HO” as loudly as I say, “No mo HO!” It mystifies me.

  4. Was Burton homosexual? I have no idea, but the 1990 film Mountains of the Moon suggests that Speke was sexually attracted to Burton. (And I seem to vaguely recall a scene where Burton tenderly resculpts the clay of Speke’s death mask with a lover’s touch. But I only saw the film once, long ago.) I have no idea about Speke either, but since the writers chose to depict another (straight) person as homosexual, for some reason, I would not be surprised if all of this was invented.
    And why not? If Ann Boleyn can posthumously become a black African woman, then all things are possible if only our minds be open.

  6. The fact that the Swedes can build, man, and maintain the Swordfish means that Sweden has not yet learned to be fully multicultural. But that is a transformation that must take place if Sweden is to survive. It will not be the monolithic, wh… [cough; long pause] society it once was. It is a huge transformation for Sweden to make, but without that transformation Sweden will not survive. [Is the last sentence a prediction, or a threat? You decide.]

But socially conditioned like all good Scandinavians: When she finally got comfortable enough to trust me, she told me about being stalked by various Muslim immigrants.     1. In interesting scenario for the Nordstream pipeline(s) being demo’d is found in the fine novel Broken Toys. Or you can believe that the US sent one of its three Seawolf Class Submarines – designed specifically to do those sorts of things – into the shallow Baltic to do it, hoping the sailors would keep their mouths shut.

      1. Well, US submariners have the distinction of being some of the closed close-mouthed secret peoples, just shy of those at various test sites in Nevada.

        Not saying that we didn’t do it (as I don’t put anything past the current administration) but the tight-mouthed community of sub people are rather tight-mouthed.

          1. Being able to point to cause and effect with absolute confidence at Nordstream could start a war. The speculation in the novel Broken Toys is likely what happened – but the book is fiction so there you go.

  8. Burton was a very interesting guy. Given his experiences, it’s surprising he died of natural causes. Another interesting man from that period was Alexander Gardner who lived to a ripe old age in rough country.

    1. Look at Wyatt Earp’s life and how long he lived – recently discussed on the blog.

      1. His older brother James lived nearly as long and Vigil also passed from natural causes. Morgan was famously murdered and youngest brother Warren was shot dead in an altercation in 1900.

        1. There was also John Johnson, aka the Crow Killer, aka Liver Eating Johnson (subject of the feature film Jeremiah Johnson) who took on the Crow Nation, lived to tell about it and died at a full age in Los Angeles of all places. How did HE survive? The book, The Crow Killer, written in the 1920s may still be in print. Worth a read.

        1. I think that it was not well considered given the number of mountain lions present and jaguars – reported to the south of me but also spotted closer to me on the Rim.

  11. I’m thinking time in a crowded space station becomes intolerable, when you can’t leave. If it was politicians, and CEO’s on board, I doubt the cuts in costs, DEI, and the retaining of useless employees would be paramount in importance.

  12. Re the AT-10, the Army also bought and used Cessna AT-17 Bobcats, where the Navy just went with Beech D-18s. My cousin went from Yellow Perils to D-18s, and was starting the PBY pipeline when the war ended.

  13. The movie was about my first attempt at college. The frat was Tau Kappa Epsilon. We were the party animals. The sororities that we had socials with the girls would all bring condoms as we didn’t think that far ahead as we were all alcohol limited. We were the most popular Frat with the sororities.
