An Example of Literary Doublets

The Bible forces us to choose which story to believe. Bible Scholars don’t know which story is true. The text does not make it clear which of the three stories to accept, but they’re all radically different.

David vs Goliath – The First Book of Samuel

The First Account

Israel goes to war with the Philistines (17:1–3), and a giant Philistine named Goliath challenges Israel’s army to single combat (17:4–10). This is, understandably, terrifying (17:11). David is introduced for a second time, as though he hadn’t been just a few minutes before, and he brings supplies from his home to his brothers on the Israelite front just in time to see Goliath come out and taunt the army (17:12–24). Some brotherly quarreling follows (17:25–31) before David volunteers to fight Goliath. He then provides his questionable qualifications—killing animals while shepherding—as justification for being chosen (17:32–37). Saul agrees.

Unable to wear Saul’s armor or wield his weapons, David fights Goliath with a staff and a sling (17:38–40). After some vicious boasts from Goliath and some pious boasts from David, David knocks Goliath prone with a stone from his sling and then cuts off his head with the soldier’s own sword (17:41–51).5 The Philistine army breaks, and the Israelites carry the day (17:52–53).

The story of David and Goliath then goes down in history as an archetypal example of faith triumphing over impossible odds.

The Second Account

This story flatly contradicts 1 Samuel 16. In chapter 16, David is a valorous warrior and a man of war, but in chapter 17, David isn’t strong enough or experienced enough to wear Saul’s armor. Saul specifically says he can’t fight because he’s just a boy (17:33). In 1 Samuel 16, David is King Saul’s Weapons Bearer (bodyguard who fights alongside and protects the king).

The Third Account

Goliath is referred to by name in 1 Samuel 17 twice, in verses 4 and 23. On every other of nearly thirty occasions, he’s referred to as “the Philistine.” This is unusual. There aren’t any other examples of biblical narratives in which a prominent character is referred to by their ethnicity alone. What explains this unusual feature of the text? It might be because of another contradiction that’s at stake in 1 Samuel 17. In 2 Samuel 21:15, in a list reviewing the accomplishments of some of David’s elite soldiers, we’re told that a man named Elhanan killed Goliath. The description of Goliath in 2 Samuel 21 matches the description in 1 Samuel 17. There’s no mistaking it. It’s the same Goliath.

Housekeeping: I will be traveling and exploring (walkabout), and my blogging will not be the usual flow of drivel you’ve become accustomed to. You’re free to pick a topic and express yourself below. Intermittent blogging is not indicative of a problem.

Bullet Points:

** Social Media – It’s not just you. Everyone is either depressed, divorced, broke, or fat.

** A comment on adult films.

** “Birds born in a cage think that flying is an illness.”

** It has been my favorite kitchen appliance ever since I saw this advertised about 40 years ago.

** Are you too old to be in the fight? No, you are not.

** No, it’s not WSF in this ad for used cars.

** Riddle me this.

** It will make a great migrant encampment. Keep the busses rolling!

** I’ll be back before the Your American Heritage radio broadcast on August 10…

** The Sloped Roof Rangers are accepting applications. If you want to be elite, this is your big chance.

** In a circus, clowns are sent to distract you when something goes wrong. There are a lot of clowns running around. Oh! Look! A squirrel!! The entire mainstream media consists of actors reading talking points. That’s it. And then there is Maxine Waters.

** More on male-female boxing. It’s only fair that men are allowed to compete against females directly in all sports…particularly boxing. End the oppression of males now!

** Democrats want four more years of this crap. Please say NO to the Ho.

In the UK

(Mail) They’re concerned about the US economy folding. When the US catches a cold, the world catches cancer.  Even as people in the USA are wringing their hands, they look to the dumb Whore for their political future. Who presided over the mess that we currently find ourselves in? Joe/Ho. Double down on stupid, corrupt, and incompetent.

The Thinker

(American Thinker)

“Even if Moses endorsed Donald Trump, Jews wouldn’t vote for him.”

The Jewish love affair with socialism, which began in Russia with the fanaticism of the grandparents, has been transformed by the Great Terror into the fear of the parents and subsequently into the conviction of the children and grandchildren is embedded deeply in the Jewish DNA. As the Democrat party leadership drops all pretenses and openly adopts socialist principles, these hereditary socialists, impelled by conviction, will ignore once again what rising antisemitism will do to them and vote for the Party that speaks their language. Thus, they won’t vote for a specific Democrat party nominee. They will, as always, vote for socialism.

MikeW speaks (apply it to the Sermonette):

I want to reflect on what MikeW referenced here in the Havoc Journal the other day. Warriors require a pagan ethos (sorry, Christian warriors, onward Christian soldiers, put a nickel on the drum and save another drunken bum and all that). Love one another and do good to your enemies just gets you killed. I agree that more blessed is he who can draw a sword and chooses not to, but one must approach that choice carefully. Allowing your enemy to strike you on either cheek is a bad idea. Allowing that enemy a second shot is foolhardy unless you’re trying to move from this life to the next. If that’s your intent, it’s better that you wire yourself with C-4 and ballberings and walk into the enemy HQ – do some damage on your way out. The calculus of warriors is cold and hard and must be trained through muscle memory development and mindset to be instant – and absolutely pagan. Soy-boys and pajama-boys die early in any conflict. They can be useful as cannon fodder and as a feint or distraction, their lives spent in causing the enemy to react and expose that reaction. Your experiences may differ.

More Sermonette

Is there a nexus between extraterrestrial beings/dimensions of spacetime and heaven/the hereafter? One of Ryan’s guests weighs in on the topic.

The Updated New Revised Standard Edition of the Bible has what many believe to be the more correctly translated language for Genesis 1:1.

When God began to create[a] the heavens and the earththe earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God[b] swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening, and there was morning, the first day.

Does that highlighted sentence change anything for you? Maybe not. I just wanted to point it out because I think it’s interesting.

  1. Identify the Aircraft:
    1. Fairey Long Range Monoplane
    2. Grumman F4F Wildcat
    3. Blackburn Buccaneer
    4. Northrop Grumman Firebird

    1. Are you sure about the Wildcat? I don’t see any landing gear tucked into the fuselage just under the leading edge of the wing fairing into the body of the aircraft. The pitot tube is on the wrong wing (unless the image is reversed). The bottom edge of the cowling is wrong–F4F did not have a tri-part lower cowling. I believe what we have here is an F6F Hellcat.

  2. Sloped Roof-
I’ve walked over roofs (while carrying 50# drums of cable) that were so steep I had to put my boots on the screw heads to not slide off.

Stupid I admit but common practice 20 plus years ago.

    Off topic-
My wife and I are spending the night at Echuca, Australia. It has the world’s largest paddle steamer fleet including the world’s oldest operating boat built in 1866.

  3. It seems to me that liberal jews have been voting for their own executioner all these years.
Wyatt Earp, whoremonger, pimp, two felony warrants for horse theft.convicted murderer in Arizona crooked boxing referee ,kick out of alaska stealing from prospecters

    1. The German and Austro-Hungarian Jews not only remained in place (inertia being the biggest reason IMHO), but actually believed the grape KoolAid put out by the NAZI propaganda machine and amplified by the media/movies.
As many of the war records have shown us (those who will spend the time looking), it wasn’t only the Jews, but the Slavs, Poles, and Russians (et al) who up to last believed the NAZIs would clean their country of the “refuse” (whichever refuse they disliked).
And you don’t have to be paranoid “to enjoy Levi’s Rye Bread.”

  4. Several notes for today:
Are you looking for an O-2 Birddog? I’ve seen a (needs work) one on FecesBook in the Reno/Sacramento area. Sorry, no linley-love.
The kibbutz concept used in the pre- and early early days of Israel (and still existing to an extent) is a communistic commune. While operational in small scale and for relatively short periods of time, some have transitioned to the more capitalistic “moshav” model to survive. In a moshav, the equipment is shared but individuals can profit from their labor.
Please don’t quote me, but I believe that baseball is first espoused in the old-school translation of the Old Testament/Bible in Genesis 1:1 —- “In the Big Inning…”
Thanks for your attention, veal is served on Thursday, and don’t forget to tip the wait-staff. You’ve been a great audience.
Stay safe, enjoy the time away.

  5. I don’t understand Jews who support socialism but then bitch when non-socialists have to come rescue their collective butts. And their unfailing loyalty to the American political party that has hated them since Day 1. That would be, of course, the Democrats. How quickly everyone forgets that FDR didn’t want any Jewish refugees from Europe to come to the US. And everyone forgets that FDR also had the wonderful resettlement plan for European Jews, specifically relocating small blocks of the aforementioned European Jews to just about everywhere else so as to keep them from breeding and surviving.

They are the battered women who don’t want ‘their’ men arrested because ‘they love him.’ And then end up dread, and other battered women and their families then blame the cops for not saving the women. In this case, battered women = Jews. Families = Jews. Cops = right wingers.

It never fails. Just like ‘Jews for Palestine’ or their widespread monetary support of the American democratic party that hates them but not their money.

    1. You know, I’m kind of over this perpetual victimhood thing by the JINOs. Either stand up and throw your oppressors away or shut the copulation up and accept the schtupping. Open your eyes and see reality or shut up. Just shut up.

When American Jews as a whole turn against the Global Elite and Global Dirtbags over things like 10/7/23, and support Israel and this country against the evil of Islam and socialism, then I’ll start listening to the Jews as an entity.

It’s like the Covidiocracy in NYFC. Where the political elite purposefully targeted practicing Jews while letting the Left’s brownshirts and Antifa and street thugs and everyone else get away with, in some cases, literally murder without any real backlash from Jews-et-all. And the Jews in NYFC did nothing but whine about it. Did they stop supporting the politicians who did it to them? No.

Over it. Over it all. Behold mine fields of copulations, and notice they are barren, thusly I have no copulations to give any more.

      1. Beans,
I’m surprised that you believe govt stats re ethnic votes and voting patterns.
some Jooz I know will still pull the D lever, but on the whole, unless the kids have been vaccinated (in school) or are mentally deficient (it happens, even in t he best of families), most of those I know who haven’t fled (which, in itself indicates a lack of grey matter) are more prone to pulling the R lever.

      2. Hey Beans!
Apropos of, oh, exactly nothing at all, as a medievalist I expect you’d appreciate authentic candle lighting. As a bit of a Luddite, but not a medievalist myself, I find that I appreciate gas lighting. So much more “warm” and appealing than those cold, sterile LEDs they are pushing on us. Wouldn’t you agree?

    2. Successful cultures that conquer their external enemies turn to self-loathing, which I believe is an autoimmune disease. See historical survey tomwoods.com/ep-2232-when-civilizations-hate-themselves which reviews a new book _Western Self-Contempt: Oikophobia in the Decline of Civilizations_ by Benedict Beckeld.
      .
Rationality developed last in humans, and as stress increases older brain functions take over. Thus ‘no atheists in foxholes’ and why test pilots are so rare.

  6. In my New king James translation in 2 Samuel chapter 21–from verse 15: “When the Philistines were at qwar again with israel, David and his servants with him went down and fought against the Philistines; and David grew faint. Then Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid and struck the Philistine and killed. Then the men of David swore to him, saying “You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.”
Now it happened afterward that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was one of the sons of the giant. Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a ;man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to the giant. So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother,
These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants. killed him. end at verse 22.

      1. And I add (because two links in one comment will put you in moderation):
Many Christians for many years have been of the belief that angels and demons are certainly extraterrestrial, but from the “spirit” world, whatever that is.
You might interpret that as “another dimension” and that would certainly be true, but not, perhaps, in the same vein as popular science fiction portrays “other dimension”.
A short discussion of that is here with Tucker Carlson and his guest: https://open.spotify.com/episode/3oy3cO5uYpCq17DN3CoimL?si=d3e5eac3f13042b7 around the 29 minute mark.

  7. Concur on the Hellcat. The ‘Firebird’ was Rutan’s last design, and was dual role, it ‘could’ be manned or unmanned depending on the day and role. The ‘problem’ was, it wasn’t truly high altitude capable, and would have been down in ‘busy’ air with all the big jets, while being a slow bird. Travel safe, and enjoy the walkabout.

  8. About 35 years ago, I had a conversation with a biblical translation scholar. He pointed out that our current knowledge is much deeper regarding the languages used to write the books of the Bible. He also pointed out that the current English language is a comparatively weaker language than that spoken in the era of King James I. The Bible translations in modern times can have some clarity, but are generally less beautifully expressed than the KJV. Some of the differences are shown clearly in John Brayan’s Three Little Pigs story: https://youtu.be/OxoUUbMii7Q?si=L1uU_7rebDTBcosK

  9. * “kitchen appliance” – sashimi (刺身) for those with ill-fitting dentures
    * “An Example of Literary Doublets” – I find nowhere in the 10 Commandments that “The Bible forces us to choose…”
Many of us believe that these are stories meant to be interpreted by wise men (prophets, rabbis) as allegories to be applied to a particular current event
    * The Thinker – prior to WWII I might have agreed: Jooz vote as a block; post-Nam, not so much, not one of us who volunteered: obviously
Prior to the revelations about FDR, maybe; afterwards only those who were truly addicted to the grape KoolAid continued to pull the D lever

    1. > Many of us believe that these are stories meant to be interpreted by wise men (prophets, rabbis) as allegories to be applied to a particular current event

  10. If anybody has a question they might like asked of Larry during the interview, feel free to e-mail me at edward at bonderenka dot com.
Put “question” in the subject line.
I will not attribute the question unless you let me know you don’t mind.
There’s some people here I wouldn’t mind having the e-mail address of anyways.

  11. Interesting read on David v Goliath. Were were taught pretty much the first version in Catholic grade-school.
    .
Enjoy your break. I’ll be in the garage.
    .
If you’re too old for combat, you can always reload brass or magazines, clean and repair weapons, fish to provide food, and any one of a zillion other things. If I’m breathing and moving, I’ll do whatever I can.
    .
I read the article in The Havok Journal, and it’s quiet a sobering piece. And I agree about most of the current crop of “males”, especially in the big cities/liberal enclaves. I doubt most of them would last a week or two in a real SHTF situation that was widespread.
    .
    More lies…..yawn.
    .
I think the first sentence removes any ambiguity about when God came into existence. In The Beginning could be taken as God and The Creation happened at the same time. IANA Theologian, never played one on TV, and I haven’t stayed at a Holiday Inn in decades.
    .
Another very pretty British aircraft design. #2 looks like a Hellcat prototype. #3 are British, also very nice looking aircraft.
Anybody who doesn’t like airplanes deserves to be blocked…..

    1. I see a lot of New Americans. Just like so-called “Heritage Americans” (what a hateful term) except that they are unburdened by the original sins of racism and white supremacism. I am sure that those lovely New Americans collectively have a mean (“average”) IQ of 100 or more, have great impulse control, are fully literate in English, have reverence for the Constitution, respect for our Greco-Romano-Germanic-Christian intellectual and moral heritage, and will contribute more to society than they receive. So what’s your point?

      1. Laying on the sarcasm pretty thick Doc. I see a lot of illegal military aged males and females that are very agitated at the fact that they are being filmed. Now why do you think that is?

        1. The sarcasm isn’t directed at you, just to be clear. And yes, the people we see in the vid clip are clearly a problem. But the real problem is the people we do NOT see, those who have enabled the ones in the video to even enter the country, much less be allowed to reside here, get benefits that actual Americans don’t and so forth. I am reminded of the Solzhenitsyn quote that used to pop up easily on Google. But now it’s almost impossible to find, for some reason. Anyway, ol’ Aleksandr was talking about Russia, but with a tuck here and a stitch there, the garment fits today’s US as well.

“You must understand, the leading people who took over academia, the newsmedia and foreign policy do not think of themselves as Americans. They hate Americans. They hate Christians. Driven by resentment and hatred they corrupt and undermine this nation without a shred of human remorse. It cannot be overstated. The fact that most of the country is ignorant and uncaring about this enormous crime is proof that the global media is in the hands of the perpetrators”.

  12. Also the economy is so bad right now that even Pedo Joe’s job is being outsourced to an Indian. CAMELTOE the HO!
    GOD HELP U.S. ALL

      1. Market just tanked today…but don’t you believe it, Kah-Mullah will tell you all is just peachy..because she’s a genius at such things donchs know.

    1. “Care”? I’d go further, they have been intentionally taking a wrecking ball to it so the 85% of SISU MAGA American’s get squeezed and squashed. We’re lint to them. If anything we are tolerant in comparison, but won’t they be surprised when we finally say “Enough!”

      1. I’m with Paul on this. It’s being done deliberately to further weaken us. First, our manufacturing was “off-shored”, and the factories shuttered. Second, our energy production was strangled by frivolous regulations and edicts. Third, our mineral wealth was locked up by damaging regulations and policies. Fourth, our power grid is deliberately being crippled by pie-in-the-sky “Green Energy” mandates. Fifth, competent military commanders have been driven out and replaced by sell-out, freak-show replacements, whose policies have driven out the competent, motivated enlisted personnel.
I could go on, but what’s the use……..

        1. Was going to add…But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism…. but as a Physics teacher once said in class…“It Should Be Obvious To The Most Casual Observer…..”

  13. I don’t see why the universe shouldn’t contain intelligent/rational/human species. Are they fallen or are they not? CS Lewis, famously, postulated that the former could be true, see Voyage to Venus etc.

OK, that’s them. Then there’s us, about to be ruled by a cackling WHORE.
