History

Many who visit the Normandy beaches are often surprised to learn that the bunkers do not look like those seen in Saving Private Ryan. Those in that film are large, towering structures the height of the cliffs that contain machine guns. In reality, such bunkers do not exist.

The bunker in this photo is situated on Utah beach, but it is of typical shape and size for the Atlantik Wall. As you can see, it is very different from those often depicted in movies and video games, but it is actually a much more sensible design.

One of the first things you may notice is that it does not point out to sea, but instead along the beach. This simple difference means the bunker’s firing opening is not exposed to the incoming enemy, and greatly increases the area its weapons can fire upon. By facing down the beach, the crew can fire along the entire coast, instead of only a couple hundred meters if it had been facing out to sea.

The extension protruding on the right is a shield to protect the bunker from rounds coming from the direction of the sea (ie. powerful naval guns). Bunkers of this type are much easier to construct and hide.

Other bunkers and defenses situated along the beach would cover each other’s rears.

Large bunkers rarely contained only machine guns. Machine guns were usually located in tobruks, which were essentially concrete foxholes (prepared positions).

So where did Saving Private Ryan go wrong? The movie’s bunker technically isn’t a mistake, as they were intentionally “exaggerated ” for dramatic effect. The most visually similar existing type of bunker is the Leitstand class of fortifications, observation bunkers that often served as the rangefinder and fire control system for larger guns.

North Korean Generals wear more Medals than Russians today

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu’s impressive collection of medals has been shamelessly overshadowed.

National Resthome

Between Fetterman mumbling aimlessly all day, McConnell nearly stroking out on camera as he drifts mentally, Biden soiling his pants every ten minutes and Dianne Feinstein not even knowing how to vote on a bill… our government has become an unbelievably expensive adult daycare center with nameless, unaccountable handlers running the affairs of the permanent Washington establishment (The Swamp).

Russian Key Allies are all Broke

It’s a problem for the Kremlin. One exception may be Venezuela where they still pump and successfully mine for gold. Putin had to write off US$30 billion in debt from African despots just to have them in the same room with him to have a conversation (face to face thirty feet away). All the African leaders’ countries gathered together in St. Petersburg at a conference collectively have a GDP seven times smaller than Poland.

It’s like that old joke, “You’re so ugly that your mama had to tie a pork chop around your neck to make the dog lick you.” So it is with Russia.

Bullet Points:

**  Global Warming -“I don’t believe there is a climate crisis,” Clauser said during at Quantum Korea. “The world we live in today is filled with misinformation. It is up to each of you to serve as judges, distinguishing truth from falsehood based on accurate observations of phenomena.”

According to the Co2 Coalition, Clauser made similar comments in the past, including: “In my opinion, there is no real climate crisis. There is, however, a very real problem with providing a decent standard of living to the world’s large population and an associated energy crisis. The latter is being unnecessarily exacerbated by what, in my opinion, is incorrect climate science.”

Clauser’s speech was canceled – of course.

** Dirtbags will be dirtbags (Mail) I’m sure that the taxpayers will pick up the tab.

Hunter Biden left his multimillion-dollar Venice Beach, California, rental home in a state of ‘disarray and disrepair’ and owing approximately $80,000 in outstanding rent, DailyMail.com can reveal.

The scandal-mired First Son rented the sprawling property on the edge of the Grand Canal two years ago and moved in with his then ten-month old son, Beau, and second wife, Melissa, 37, in February 2021.

According to one well-placed source, ‘Hunter and Melissa were horrible tenants. Not only did they stiff the owner for months of rent, they left the house in terrible condition.’

** Strike on —

** The WHO has appointed Climate Czar John Kerry’s daughter, Dr. Vanessa Kerry, as Director General Special Envoy For Climate Change and Health

Another unelected puppet deciding on your life and freedom. Being an absolute piece of shit to humanity runs deep in these families.

** CDR SAL is depressed – more here.

** Shocking News! Eliminating gun-free zones and increasing the number of legally-armed citizens would reduce the occurrence of mass shootings, according to a paper released by the Crime Prevention Research Council (CPRC). The study found (I’m sure that they spent millions) that criminals avoid attacking armed people.

** If you want to understand the world, there are two things you need to understand:

A large number of people never emotionally or socially matured past junior high.

These people drive absolutely all public discourse.

** “Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team made a startling admission in its case against former President Donald Trump, acknowledging in a new court filing that it failed to turn over all evidence to Mr. Trump’s legal team as required by law while falsely claiming it had.”

  1. No more friggin’ ancient people in ANY of the three Branches, set a danged ‘Sell By’ date that excludes you if your age at the end of term will be ‘X’ (78?). Kim DuToit has some thoughts on the subject, of which I entirely agree as these people start losing their faculties then turn into old fart mad men and woman drunk on their own self importance. Gotta swap out and refresh in order to maintain a proper government. As for younger brain dead politicians, set some standard of operation one must meet, especially if the person is dead before hitting DC (Oh wait, PA did that already…well, point made.)

Then again, Term Limits would solve ALL of it…Two terms and yer gone back from whence you came.

    1. “ Term Limits would solve ALL of it”

H Beam Piper offers an alternate solution in his novella “Lone Star Planet” (original title “A Planet for Texans”).

      1. Mike, term limits sound good but miss the center of gravity — the gravy train.
-Reduce the salaries to that of the US average family of four figure
-Prohibit the lifetime retirement check, they get SSA just like the rest of us chumps
-Prohibit the Congress from adjusting their own pay checks
-Have the representatives and senators live in government housing — southeast DC has some places that could be used
-Have them eat in the existing House and Senate dining facilities
-Prohibit any inside trading at all or use of information to feather their nests
-Put lobbyists on a strict diet and jail for both the lobbyist and the elected official using influence to get ahead
-Cut out the Congressional junkets abroad
-Fly scheduled AMC flights or coach to get to and from work. Some time on a nylon web seat in the back of a Herk would change attitudes
These are just a few of the perks that if addressed prior to term limits would shake the tree sufficiently to get rid of many grifters in the House and Senate. The founders knew how graft works into government and that’s why elected officials had to support themselves while on duty.

    2. It ain’t just the “politicians.”
I look closely at their staff personnel who drive the political processes and can change their offices easily when the person to whom they’re attached is removed from office.
I look at the “foundations/PACs” which hold the money that drive political processes.
I look at the bureaucracies (and their heads), deeply rooted over the decades, which enforce policies.
Various and sundry speak of a “revolution”, but unless the rot is rooted out in its entirety, then you’re just doing a very light spray-painting over rust.

      1. K Street needs to be turned into a park…that’ll solve that end of the problem. No more PAC’s, Special Interests (aka grifters), or any other “Firm” straight out of a Grisham novel that are nothing but influence peddlers looking to score points against competitors.

      2. British TV did a documentary of this, which they called a comedy.
        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yes_Minister

      1. Too bad there isn’t a level we can pull, both physically and metaphorically. Used to have one on the voting machine, now we have corruptible mail in ballots and computer machines.

  2. Regardless of the actual size of the fortifications walking the beach at Normandy looking up at all the ruins of the fortifications was still intimidating back in the 90s when I was there. All honor to them that pushed through that mess and on to Germany.

+1 on age limits although I would add term limits as well.

    1. It was an Atlantic Wall. We’re lucky that Rommel went home to celebrate his wife’s birthday when we hit it.

      1. My opinion is that Rommel would have used the panzers without Hitler’s approval and the results would have justified his decision to the high command.

  3. Russia may need to accessorize with delicious pork products. But I’m pretty sure that Russians in general, and Putin in particular, don’t have the hatred, disdain, resentment, and psychotic rage against me that “our” people at State do.

Imagine if the US Secretary of State was called Tony Takahashi, and his lead person on Ukraine was Vicky Nakashima, wife of the scion of the Kimora clan that notoriously hates Slavs in general and Russia in particular. Suppose the President of Ukraine was called Volodomyr Fujiyamaa (yes, double terminal A, for no reason at all), and the Prime Minister of Ukraine was Denys Suzuki, and their sugar daddy was called Ihor Kitayama. People would say: “Hmmmm. Isn’t that curious that so many of the key players in this slow-rolling meatgrinder of a disastrous brother war are Japanese? Isn’t that weird?”

But that’s just me drinking too much Belgian trippel in a Lower Eastside bar called “Burp Castle”. (No joke.) Clearly it’s the beer talking. There’s nothing statistically improbable about US State or the leadershit (sic) of Our Second Greatest Ally.

    1. stop being so cute; if you want to say the people you’ve named above are all Jews or have at least one Jewish parent (Mischlinge) then come right out and say so.
Next you’ll be telling me that the current installed inhabitant of the White House is really a secret Jew or that The Donald is a convert.
Please. I beg of you: don’t make any secret of your anti-Semitism (or antisemitism – or however it’s supposed to be spelled/spelt today! “a rose by any other name smells as sweet”)

      1. I don’t think that Barack Hussein Obama is a Jew…for the record…the question of his Islamic Roots was rarely explored in the media.

        https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/aug/20/the-first-presumed-muslim-president/

Rumors of Mr. Obama’s purported Muslim identity spread in January of 2007 and were tied to Hillary Rodham Clinton operatives, who denied responsibility. The Obama camp responded that “Barack Obama is not and has never been a Muslim. Obama never prayed in a mosque. He has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim and is a committed Christian who attends [The Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s] United Church of Christ.” That seemed definitive.

But in a February 2008 interview with the New York Times, Mr. Obama said the Adhan, the Muslim call to prayer, is “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.” He then recited it, “with a first-class [Arabic] accent.” The opening of the Adhan contains the Shahada, the Muslim profession of faith, proclaiming, “There is no god but God and Muhammad is the prophet of God.” Stating this before two Muslims is the traditional requirement for joining the Islamic faith.

Calling Wright’s United Church of Christ a “Christian Church” is a massive stretch. That’s where Barack met his wife/husband/whatever.

        1. Too bad God didn’t use that cretin as an example, smiting him right there at the pulpit.

        2. It’s in his ‘auto’ biography that he’s been a muslim, which to muslims means he is one.

One of the central tenets of Islam is the permission, need, god-given right, to lie to anyone and everyone in furtherance of Islam.

Heck, same book says he was born in Kenya and not of military or state department employees.

  4. Special Counsel Jack Smith
Holds the record for being slapped down by the Supreme Court in an 8 – 0 vote for his role in prosecuting Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell.

  5. LL:
you’ve used a word I’m unable to locate (except geographically),
I’d greatly appreciate a reference for this particular meaning.

      1. “tobruks”
I understand the geographical reference and TNX for the definition; I’m just trying to find how the word arose and from where

        1. Ah, yes. It came into use in the German Army after the siege of Tobruk. Prepared positions constructed in sand tended to cave in when subjected to artillery fire, so they poured cement to support the structural integrity of those positions and going forward through WW2, were called “tobruks”. The Atlantic Wall was a defense in depth along the coast and they poured a LOT of concrete. Rommel oversaw those preparations and he’d been in Tobruk – so there you go.

  6. They are ‘perfect’ examples of the need for term limits, among other things… And the movies suck, so no great loss…

  7. The Norks get a medal for every meeting they attend with fat boy that does not result in their murder.

  8. Term Limits won’t work. The only thing that will work is if all American voters actually educated themselves about the candidates and the issues and voted not with their hearts but with their heads.

    Yeah, I can dream, can’t I?

  9. Hunter: a grifter can’t change his stripes.

Lather, rinse and repeat for the Kerry fam-damily and Jack Smith. Add others to the list as you deem appropriate.

  10. “A large number of people never emotionally or socially matured past junior high.”

Pretty much true and it makes life hard for the preacher, KISS, as the acronym runs.

    My, what a scary DiFi!
