Special Ops: Lioness

I may watch it on Paramount+ but it looks like the new generation of movie BS that is so common now. The cast is good and Taylor Sheridan does good work.  So maybe I’ll give it a try.

Special Ops: Lioness is a brand new Paramount+ Original spy thriller series that follows Joe (Zoe Saldaña) as she tries to balance her professional and personal lives while working as a Marine and key operative for the CIA. Joe is given her most difficult mission yet as she is tasked with going undercover alongside aggressive Marine Raider, Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira ), to befriend the daughter of a suspected terrorist being surveilled by the CIA.

    1. The Germans and Americans used multi-barrel FLAK against infantry and light armor to great effect during WW2. And the 8.8 Pak 43 was a dual-use cannon.

          2. Heh. Point taken. Am delighted to report it worked. Carbine is one I assembled back in the 90’s as a spare, with a Winchester barrel. Just last year got around to shooting it off a bench. Holes in paper target were waaay left. Adjustable rear sight cranked to full right windage and STILL to the left. So, changed out to an Underwood barrel. Rear sight cranked back to center, first shot (and all following) dead center for windage.

Way back in the years before the ubiquitous credit cards and cell phone payments when I was working as a waiter, busting my a$$ and flashing my bright toothy smile from sideburn to sideburn, I might garner from a lot of tables a $1 dollar tip (or ten times the average – gives one an idea how far back that was): 50 cents always went to the maître d’ (for steering the high tippers to my tables), thirty cents to the “kitchen staff” (distributed by the chefs to dishwashers on up), and five cents to the busboy (who otherwise would leave your tables filthy.)
      Question: how much of the $800B more of our money actually gets to the Ukraine?

      1. About $3…I say every person in public office has to disclose their bank accounts, before, during, and after their so-called public service, that’ll end most of the criminal graft.

          (A) Prohibit employee unions from contributing money directly or in any derivative way to elected people who vote for their salaries.
          (B) Prohibit politicians OR THEIR FAMILIES from investing in any company or person who does business directly or indirectly with the government.
          (C) Prohibit politicians OR THEIR FAMILIES from receiving any benefit from any person or organization while they are in office or three years after they leave office. After they leave office they are limited to a salary from a company not to exceed what they earned while in office for a period of three years.

      2. We know from the FTX scandal that $477 million arrived in Ukraine and then was laundered back into the Democrat Party in the US through cryptocurrency. So technically it did ARRIVE in Ukraine.

  9. Watched the trailer…nah. Not a chauvinist at all…my sister was the only gal on the softball team who could throw a line drive to 2nd base so was made catcher, and she was not butch, just had 3 brothers. But geez…this constant push to present woman as tougher than men and full-on operatives (Denzel v. Queen Latifa as The Equalizer, not a hard choice, and I like QL in her movie roles). Not that they didn’t/don’t exist, but suspend reality is a bridge too far with this one. (Mike W is the real deal, same with LL and others here).

    That said, I could look past that aspect (Freeman and others give it gravitas)…but it’ll be a hard pass for me…looks like more contrived Hollywood mind candy…then again, I never watched Yellowstone or the spin-offs either…and Sheridan is supremely talented.

    1. Laysla De Oliveira and Zoë Saldaña are each around 5’7” and under 120 lbs. Can’t figure out the role of Saldaña’s character from the trailer, but hard to imagine a sub-120 lb girl as a Marine Raider. Then again, Dick Levine is a woman Admiral now, so whadda I know?

    2. It is based on a true story but i the true story the characters were men. Ooops.

Just doesn’t pass the visual smell test for me as traditional male/female roles are what they are…Amazonian or not, 98% of woman are not stronger than men, God saw to that in construction (altho that is changing drastically with injected estrogen into the food supply, lack of fathers…blah, blah, blah). Next Cat Woman at the hands of these morons will have a twinky male in the role…visual smell test producing a certain gag factor.

      Trust me. I’ve defeated excellent female fighters just by being a fat tank. There was one female knight in the SCA that I’d just get close up and step on her foot and that shut her down. One day she was walloping me in the torso for 15 straight hits while I watched her do it. She bitched about it and I lifted up my tunic showing her I had no torso armor on, just a padded gambeson. She couldn’t hit me hard enough for me to feel it. Now, double handed spear she could get enough ass behind it for me to call it, but otherwise no.

      Same with most females, they just don’t have the body strength for single handed weapons. Polearms, yes, swords and other single-handed weapons, no.

      Makes me laugh in anger every time I see some pipsqueak go all uber-Rambo on a big fit operator dude. Yeah, no.

      I want to see a movie where the chickyboo goes hand to hand with Bubba the walking slab of Doom and he just flattens her. Maybe catches one of her leg kicks and then proceeds to beat everyone else to death using her as the beater.

      Or she dumps a full mag into his chest, which gets sucked up by his armor, and he pops her one in her armor from a snotgun sending her flying across the room, or at least shattering her ribs.

  11. Back when he was actively blogging , Bloviating Zeppelin coined the term, “American Media Maggots”. Too accurate. On a personal level I ignore the mainstream 4th Estate as much as possible. Kind of like being in a sketchy neighborhood, you keep your head on a swivel but don’t engage the inhabitants.

    For me, there is far more accurate and timely information to be found in blogs.

    The late Michael Vanderboegh, who passed away in 2016, blogged as Sipsey Street Irregulars. His blog was always point on.

  12. I always thought magazine-fed rocket launchers were cool. You don’t see them very often.

    One of the things I’m enjoying most about observing the Ukraine war from afar is seeing every possible weapon mounted on a BTR. Wonder what’s still hidden under the tarp, could be SPAA?

    I get the aircraft rocket pod on the MTLB, you see that pretty regularly. However, WTF is that weird gun on the back? It looks like something you’d see on a torpedo boat, circa 1910… some sort of weird low-recoil mount, maybe? Also, rather not be the gunner on thet if they decide to let go with the rockets…

    in re Michael Watson’s “Hunting in the Shadows”
    In the Introduction (Yeah! I have a bad tendency to read those), he mentions on page vli a book (treatise, really) I’d never run across, “Modern Guerilla Warfare” edited by Franklin Mark Osanka. Just received it this AM and began thumbing through it – WOW! Found it, BTW, per addall.com which is not a bad site to hunt for the odd volume.
