In the Mojave Desert

There are also water sources at each fort, or at the site of each fort. Look for glyphs on the rocks – if you want to find water.

Olympics: Used to be fun and enjoyable to watch…forty/fifty years ago when it was truly amateur and without pro-level sponsorships that have ruined every sport. Haven’t watch in decades, like pro sports…too controlled. Look at Pro Ball and how it used to be: guys hitting .300, infield warm-ups, less showboating, good umpires, few commercial interruptions, aces throwing complete games, decent giveaways, free beer night, and the best…stirrups. The purity of the game has been lost. Pro football under Goodell has become ridiculous , like the halftime mess showcased.

Olympics. I’d like to take the standard 1930 era vintage clothing and gear, and have them compete using that stuff. No updating to modern design, sewing, standards of construction.. nothing. Plain old hand sharpened steel skates that some cobbler hacks leather onto. Skis made from wood, heavy wet wool clothing that isn’t skin tight. Hand them a military wood stock 30-06 or mauser as the rifle. Go at it. Then we’ll see how they compare to 1932 winners.

Unfortunately I don’t have surgical training. But I am reminded of a strange story I heard from one of Tim Curry’s physicians (yes, Dr Frank N. Furter himself; how’s that for a name-drop out of left field?). So this young man who was more than a bit odd, mentally, became fixated on sexual purity, ostensibly for religious reasons, while at college. He was continually tormented by lustful thoughts. He reasoned that it was a glandular thing, and could be fixed surgically. By himself. He came to medical attention after calling 911 because he had lacerated his own liver while trying to remove his own adrenal glands. (The adrenals sit atop the kidneys, which is why I thought of this.) Then it was discovered that he had already castrated himself. Quite without incident, as it happened.

But a few weeks after the auto-deballing he was again tormented by lust. In his readings he determined that the adrenal glands also produced testosterone. Clearly the adrenals had to go. Now normally one would do the surgery from the back to get to the adrenals, but obvs he couldn’t see or have dexterity to surgerize his own back. So his plan was a front incision, and he’d hold his liver out of the way while getting to the right adrenal. Did the incision, had the incisional bleeding controlled, but when he tried to move his liver he lacerated the organ, which is quite vascular. Big bleeding. Called 911. Survived. TC’s doctor happened to be an undergrad, living in the same dorm, when this happened, though he didn’t know the guy. There was a huge to-do with EMS all over the place, and an appalling scandalissimus. Rumors were all over the place. Needless to say, the self-surgerizing student did not return. So years later, when TC’s doc was in practice in a different city, a new patient appeared for care. New Patient explained his medical problems, and it was The Same Guy. Small world innit, and all that. (Same Guy had no idea TC’s doc had been a fellow student in his very dorm. “DId you tell him?” Oh no, what would be the point?)

Oh yeah, one more thing. Tim Curry wanted to make sure he could get along with this doctor before he hired him, so he invited him to dinner in Manhattan where he was doing some play at the time. When doc got to the restaurant, Billy Crystal was there with Curry, so the three of them had dinner together. Doc says both men are genuinely funny in and of themselves; it’s not only that they have good writers. Doc said it was probably the most witty and congenial (some people are funny, but do mean humor, apparently these two don’t do that) dinner he had ever had.

Graduated High School in Ski Town USA with Olympic skiers and have a lot of respect for the hard work needed to be an elite athlete. That said, they can do what they do because of 250 years of sacrifice and blood of our country men and women to preserve this country. Using their 1st amendment right by pissing on the graves of those who made their opportunities possible shows their lack of moral fiber.
