After the sightings, Chief of Defense Frederik Vansina said the Belgian military would shoot down any additional drones that appear. Lastly, I would recommend that they speak to the power, water, and electrical companies that service them about the ability to delay payments. I know we were doing this in the late 70s, and many utilities were willing to do so because they understood the situation. The Mexican President, Claudia Scheinbaum, was triggered (Breitbart) when the US Department of Transportation canceled 13 flights from an airport in Mexico to the United States. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced flight route cancellations in response to a longstanding violation of an international agreement. The issue arose when former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) favored Mexican airlines over U.S. airlines at the airport. A second issue concerned the relocation of cargo flights from one Mexico City airport to a second.
After several warnings issued by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, the Trump Administration moved this week to cancel the flight routes out of the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), one of AMLO’s pet projects.
On Wednesday morning, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum claimed that she was outraged by what she called a unilateral measure by the U.S. government. She stated that her country was “no one’s piñata… Mexico must be respected.”
Impact!
The Chesapeake Bay impact crater is a buried meteor- or asteroid-impact structure located beneath the southern part of Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, USA. The impact occurred about 35.5 million years ago (Late Eocene), forming a crater.
Formation & size
• A bolide (asteroid or comet fragment) struck a shallow shelf on the western margin of the Atlantic Ocean, in the region now occupied by Chesapeake Bay. The impact excavated a large crater: seismic and drilling data show a diameter of approximately 85 km and a depth of about 1.3 km in its original form.
• Because it struck sediment- and water-rich terrain (“wet target”), the crater has complex morphology: a central basin, a surrounding annular trough (ring trough) formed by collapse and slumping of the crater walls.
Aftermath & geological significance
• Immediately after the impact, enormous quantities of water, sediments, and rock were thrown into the air, triggering large tsunamis in the Atlantic basin. Over subsequent millions of years, the crater was filled with breccia (broken rock and sediment from the collapse) and then buried by younger sediments. The buried structure has influenced the hydrology and geology of the region: for example, it truncated aquifers, disrupted groundwater flow, and contributed to zones of saline groundwater intrusion in the Chesapeake region.
Why it matters
• It is the largest known impact crater in the United States.
• Because it formed in a marine/shallow-water sediment context (a “wet target”), it serves as a valuable analog for studying impact processes on other planets and under similar conditions.
• The fact that it is buried yet still influences modern surface features (rivers, bay shape), and the local hydrogeology makes it of both scientific and practical interest (e.g., for groundwater management).
Location & present context
• The center of the crater lies beneath the town of Cape Charles, Virginia, and extends beneath Chesapeake Bay and its surrounding peninsulas. Because it is buried under hundreds of metres of sediment, it’s not visible as a classic “hole in the ground” crater; instead, its existence is inferred through drilling cores, seismic surveys, and subsurface geology.

It’s a good article. Claudio: Africa is Africa, but this is one of the best pieces on the subject I’ve seen in a long time. The French deployments in the Sahel had a point. Well, I’m surprised that there are people surprised by this. Guess it just shows that people don’t pay attention to what’s going on around them. Though around these parts I am more struck by the sheer poundage of steaks and skrimps in their carts than by the amount of sugary snacks and beverages. (And it ain’t jus no black thang either, despite my sarcastic use of “skrimps” — plenty of whites doing this.) And spot on about the late-model SUV too. Parenthetically, skrimps is stolen from James Lafond, who has a series of blog posts (“The Ghetto Grocer”) about his experiences working in, and managing, inner-city Baltimore grocery stores over several decades. It’s worth a read for: the sociological analyses; the in-the-trenches view of ghetto retail work; and a bunch of humorous, ridiculous, and sometimes infuriating anecdotes.

Incidentally, by basically sheer chance I had dinner with James recently in the darkest heart of Silicon Valley. I think the last time I physically sat down with him was a few years ago in Portland (the PDX one) in a dive bar where he introduced me to a man who claimed to have been crew chief of Marine One under the Carter regime, as well as briefly under Reagan. This last was on account of how Amy (and her little friends) would wreak havoc on the snacks and souvenirs laid in for guests on Marine One. “What kind of brat unwraps all the candy bars but doesn’t bother to eat even one? And we had decks of playing cards with the Presidential Seal on them, for people to take as souvenirs. She’d take all the cards out of the cellophane wrappers! [the man’s blood pressure was visibly rising as he recounted this] We couldn’t give out loose cards to people, so they became trash. What a waste!” Again, intense dislike of then-little Amy Carter would be a very strange thing to make up.

Government Shutdowns And Withheld Pay: I lost count of how many times pay was held up by Congressional politics. In the late 70s and 80s, there were several which were extremely hard on the enlisted with families. I laugh at people today crying about being essential means working without pay — which they know will be restored after the show. How many service members faithfully worked at dangerous jobs through all the previous pay pauses to keep America’s spear sharpened. The mechanics kept the planes flying and sitting on alert pads in top condition. There were no walk outs, sick outs or shoddy work. Today’s whiners have no clue what others did to allow them a safe home to grow up in.
Yes, the military relief agencies were of great help to those who were living pay day to pay day.
