Luposlipaphobia

Blog Post

I had to slide this caption somewhere on the blog, with full credit to Larson and his comedic genius. The digital watercolor has nothing to do with the caption or anything else. I’m showing off that I’m not Sinophobic. It’s quite a virtue signal.

Admin note: EdB and Old NFO have e-mailed me that my blog was hacked. I can’t find a problem at my end. If you have a problem connecting, please let me know the nature of the problem.

Bullet Points:

** Numbers, figures, charts, and graphs (this will be my epitaph) pertaining to cultural groups in America.

** There are better days than this to visit Death Valley, CA (right). Should San Francisco be renamed Death Harbor?

** The world is changed by your example, not your opinion.

** The first rule of gun safety is not to let the government have your guns.

** Spears vs Swords? Interestingly, the portrayal didn’t include any one of a number of pole arms that provide the user with different advantages.

** We all play a favorite song or group while driving. What’s yours?

** Do you buy your meds through a cost-plus pharmacy?

** California Carbon Emission Standards? Sure you could go that route and be fined or you could buy valuable carbon credits from the White Wolf Mine and show the certificate when the Highway Patrol stops you. The state trooper will be impressed at your resourcefulness…save the planet. I’ve posted this before on VM. It’s worth mentioning.

** Before and after growing a dick, or whatever it did to itself.

** LindaG mentioned housing prices on LSP’s blog. I’m not hijacking his thread, but posting median prices by state here may be instructive. Median – denoting or relating to a value or quantity lying at the midpoint of a frequency distribution of observed values or quantities, such that there is an equal probability of falling above or below it. There are areas in California where $720K won’t buy you a one-bedroom condo. Maybe not even a studio condo. Zillow search July 12: The average Santa Clara County, CA home value is $1,669,491, up 12.0% over the past year, and goes to pending in around nine days.

“Working poor” as defined for people under thirty with two income earners (no downpayment or equity stake) in Santa Clara County, Orange County, etc. is $150,000 a year.

Life is good until you realize that the 1990s weren’t ten years ago; they were thirty years ago.

** The US is removing the famous aid pier that the Biden Regime provided to support terrorism in Israel. All of the aid that entered in that way was seized by Hamas for resale to refugees – as is their custom.

** I don’t watch CNN or MSNBC for the same reason I don’t drink from the tolilet.

** You read it here first with the movie review. Kevin Costner’s Horizon Part 2 PULLED from movie theaters – despite actor putting his own money into doomed $100M project after ‘disappointing’ Yellowstone exit. A New Line spokesman told THR: ‘Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and MAX.  Straight to video for episode 2 & 3.

** From Ammo.com –

  • 10 of the 16 states that passed permitless carry more than two years ago have lower violent crime rates today.
  • States with restrictive concealed carry legislation had a homicide rate of 5.4/100k in 2022, while those with permitless carry had a homicide rate of 5.8/100k.
  • Alaska, Arizona, and Wyoming have lower homicide and violent crime rates a decade after passing the permitless carry legislation.

USS Stout DDG-55

215 consecutive days at sea. When the USS Stout returned from its  215-day deployment, there was no way to hide how much of the ship was covered in rust. These are older photos but the problem for the US Navy remains.

When I served in the US Navy, we used to joke about the condition of Russian/Soviet ships that we encountered. They looked like the USS Stout and other US Navy ships you may encounter today. There is a Navy PR story that they’re supposed to rust – and look like shit. Sorry, don’t try to sell that to a Navy man.

  1. Not Sinophobic: good. You receive one yellow star (er, gold star) from the Anti-Defamation Reague. The ADR “We’ah numbah two, so we tly haldah”.

    1. Now, if I could read the gibberish that looked like my twin sister’s Cockatiel tipped over an ink well and paraded around a picture then I might consider anti-Sinoism and battle it like do other ‘isms’.

      1. No one can read it. It IS literal gibberish, because it’s the usual AI business that looks “plausible” at first glance but mostly aren’t real words. Just like AI does for English words seen incidentally as background in an image.

I’ve seen your website, so-called Cederq. I’m on to you! You are definitely a man who must be secretly full of all the anti-Sinotisms. Ai ya! All we Chinese want to do is to control your natural resources, economy, and foreign relations (cf Thailand). Just doing neighborly, helpful stuff because you locals are clearly too dumb to make correct choices. We do it out of humanitarianism for your own good, you stupid subhumans. And then the locals decide to hate us for no reason at all. Happens everywhere we go. It’s all very mysterious. Just part of the Yellow Man’s burden, I guess.

      2. Pull dried ramen noodles out of the package. Place ink on one side and then press it onto paper. And there you go :)

      3. Actually Mike Underscore C, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Okay Asians, I have no animosity and zero ‘isms’ against. Just those that are elevated to god like brilliance and favoritisms and are plain old trying to wipe out our culture that I have the problem with. Your screeds on BN the other day filled my email inbox wanting to know what I was going to do with this interloper that was spouting off the way you did. I knew the inside joke and you being you. It was funny to say the least, the most is yet to come….

        1. I believe you meant to say “G-d like brilliance”?

Sorry (not really) about the excess correspondence. You’d think the whole “60 million Swahili speakers” thing would have been a clue.

          1. A good bunch over there, but not as edumacated like the brethren over here… No, I did say what I mean, when I do not capitalize I am speaking of lesser un-respected people and lesser gods.

  2. You get a redirect to the following in no particular order, I added the following to my firewall and cleared my cache to access via incognito on chrome:

    go.followtosfinishline.com
    redfiretobind.com
    ready.followtosfinishline.com

    1. Happened to me as well. Tried using Chrome in addition to my usual Firefox. The issue seems to have cleared up around 7:30 AM CST or so.

          1. Yes, I have the same redirect.

Still happening here, but if I keep enough tabs open it takes long enough that I can hit “stop loading”
            and get to the site.

I should probably update my firefox, but am loathe to do so as every new version of any software
            is always worse.

Happy to be getting through, now.

  4. No problem loading the blog here – I’m using Brave. But, the related posts that I usually visit will not open.

Never bring a sword or spear to a gunfight.

  5. USS Stout…. I’d be curious to see some comparative photos from say 1940 up to 2024 of various combat ships from long ocean deployments to see if it’s always been a systemic problem or a more recent concern. I would expect a ship from 1944 in that state after a shooting combat tour but not one post 2000. Is it lack of lead based paint, not enough crew, not allowed to paint under way, not allowed to let paint fall into ocean, not allowed to hang from ropes for safety reasons, … so on. I can understand some problems. But that looks like no effort at all was made to paint even easy to access areas. Second question… modern huge passenger cruise ships don’t seem to look like that after many months cruising around. What’s different? Some sort of magic in port 48 hr paint job?

    1. During WW2, the deck crew chipped paint and repainted constantly. The black gang (engine room) was spared from chipping paint. Today they don’t bother underway and the US Navy’s ships look like…Russian ships.

    2. Lead based primer and oil paint have been replaced with eco friendly crap .

      1. IIRC (If I Remember Correctly) – a new, perhaps necessary initialism/acronym, the primarily reason for non-lead-based paints was that starving children wouldn’t eat peeling paint chips thereby increasing blood lead levels thereby decreasing their IQ while leading to an increased tendency towards violence –

        1. Yep. It was meant to save the poor, oppressed minority chillens who lived in decaying 100-year old slums owned by Fat Cat Slumlords and Da Man, and were eating the paint chips falling off poorly maintained walls and woodwork. It was also touted as an excellent reason to get rid of leaded gasoline because motor vehicle exhaust contained particulate Lead, which was being inhaled by these same poor inner-city chillens who lived right alongside the Da Man’s freeways where driving their fancy cars caused mental malformation during early age.
          .
          Worked real well, didn’t it?

          1. It’s a brave new (but rusty) world, DRJIM. It’s like the anti-fouling paint that you slop on the bottom of your ocean-going boat. When I had my last ocean boat, Defiant, I drove down to Ensenada and bought the anti-fouling paint there because the expensive shit available in California didn’t work. The Mexican anti-fouling paint (old school and toxic as hell) worked like a charm.

    1. Many years ago, I was present at a conference where the presenters brought the USC marching band in to play during the program’s banquet (awards banquet) portion, and they played Tusk (a personal favorite). If you’re truly a “Tusky,” you’ll enjoy this even more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkuqJaiO2_Y

MRSLL is not a Fleetwood Mac fan – to each her own, but at least she likes the Eagles.

      1. Our generation clearly had the very best music – 60s through the 90s. Then things went to pot IMHO.

          1. Exactly. Jackson Brown was a roommate to Frey and Henley in those early days. Genius all bundled together.

          2. Love it! Watching Laurel Canyon gave me an appreciation for the “overnight success” (not) of these guys, they worked at it from every direction, lived what they wrote about, and yes LL, we had the best music (especially driving music…in tape form). Eagles, a massive favorite of mine from day one…just “running down the road trying to loosen my load”…that is for me, trying to do life elegantly.

    2. In the gadda de vida(extend drum version) by Iron Butterfly, On the Road Again, Willie Nelson, Anything by Lynard Sknyard… Merle Haggard, Don Jones, the velvet voice of Conway Twitty…

      1. If you weren’t Egyptphobic, you’d have mentioned the melodic Um Kulthum, Egypt’s greatest treasure.
        *
If you weren’t Francophobic, you’d have mentioned Edith Piaf.
        *
If you weren’t Nipponophobic, you’d have fawned all over Yoko Ono, Japan’s songbird.

  6. Hacked…late to the game this morning and saw access was…shall we say…interesting. But I am learning Russian, the switcheroo comes up in their language. Can we call you President Putin now? I mean, if Joey Velveeta Brain can misconstrue titling maybe it’ll be a trend. Me…today I’m Vice President PaulM…altho on further thought that association would make me practically useless.

Outside Temps- IT”S SUMMER! – Hit 90 here yesterday, toasty for sure at 7500′. Took a picture of the digital thermo unit, sent it “The Boys” with the caption: “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!”. Followed that with a 100 year graph showing 1933 (among a few others) spiked hotter than anything we’ve seen in the past 2 decades. GlobalWarmingClimateCoolingChange is BS, a total hoax for government and their useful idiot shills to justify grabbing more control over simple things like washing machines, dishwashers, toilets, fuel cans, what we can drive, etc.,…guns….and all the way down to the lowly Nutter Butters now costing $7 for a smaller package (THAT person who did this should be shot at dawn…don’t be messing with the best “cookie” every invented). To that, someone posted this elsewhere, brilliant: “1. We need to save electricity from dishwashers and refrigerators and air-conditioning because we don’t have enough electricity. – 2. Every new car must be electric within 10 years.” Have I got this right?”
    – That’s known as opposing agenda’s that only The Galactically Stupid could conjure up as being good and righteous…they do it all the time, failing to understand basic physics coupled to infrastructure needs, otherwise they’d embrace a proper robust grid with SMR power sources, not adult pinwheels and thousands of acres of solar panels that fail after 5 years.

Driving Music- War’s “Low Rider” never fails to mash the accelerator. Uncle Ted’s “Stranglehold”. Eagles “Take it Easy” (h/t JB for getting those first few bits down then giving it to Henley/Frey)…and a pile of others I can’t recall from my late 70’s early 80’s driving ‘mix tape’…altho the Ozzie bit with the painted on “clothes” gal works, albeit she could use a burger.

  7. Spears vs others.

First, yeah, the spear is a poking weapon, duh. But it could also slash as it’s basically a short sword or dagger on a long stick. So stab, slash.

And… there’s the pole, You can quarterstaff fight with the shaft. Some dingus closes on you, whack him with the shaft, like bayonet drills, fist pump the back-hand into the shield, the weapon or the body. Doing a kung-fu strike with the butt-end or the actual butt of the pole. Whack the enemy senseless. Clothesline him with the shaft.

Also, no strikes to the open legs or arms? What the heck? Fake a face shot and sweep the legs with the shaft. Break the bastard’s arm with a pole strike. Stab him in the elbow or upper arm. Push the spear between the legs and pull up and back, racking the jerk and possibly cutting his balls off.

The spear is such a mobile weapon used two handed.

As to Spear and Sword, well, that’s also viable. A much lighter spear, used one handed, held like you’re going to toss a javelin, can give the user lots of advantages. Go watch the spear and shield fight between Achilles and Hector in the movie “Troy.” Probably the best spear fight ever filmed.

With a larger shield, you can thrust from the side or overhand down. Works very well in large shield walls, after all, it’s what the Anglo Saxons used at Hastings Field in 1066 to hold off the Normans and their cavalry. Until the militia broke ranks and charged at the ‘retreating’ cavalry and got surrounded and cut down like dogs thus opening Harold’s line for flank attacks. Dumbasses

And, well, what happens when the spearman has a dagger or short sword, or hand axe, or mace, or… and dumbass attacker gets close and spearman grabs his own short weapon? Tangle up the enemy’s weapon and go stabby-stabby and hacky-hacky with your own light weapon. Trust me, it works.

As to how to fight a spearman with only a one-handed weapon and no shield? Don’t. Stay out of his range, look for a rock or something, or just get the hell out of spearguy’s way.

Sword and shield? Take the hit with the shield, charge in using the shield to keep the spear tied up, close so close you’re pushing your chest against his spearshaft (man, that sounds nasty, don’t it) and just hack and chop and poke the spearguy’s now-exposed legs and arms and head and…

Two-handed weapons? If you are so stupid to put most of your weapon behind or to the side of you, since your weapon is also your shield, then you deserve to die. In agony and pain. Because you are too stupid to breathe. Just watch Connor McCleod get stabbed by the Kurgan in “Highlander.” Dumbass’s sword is behind him and his targe is way off his center line. Seriously, dumbass.

Instead, adopt a pose where your point is forward of you, preferably around the height of the center of the enemy’s chest (Mid-Guard) though having the point and blade higher (High Guard) is okay if you’re really strong or the point is about the enemy’s knee level (low guard) but that’s really a stupid way to die unless you are an expert, a serious expert.

From Mid Guard, you can block the spear, thrust with your own weapon, chop the spearguy’s arms and hands by sliding your blade down the shaft until fingers and hands are disconnected, quick flip to the side and there go the forearms.

And any two-handed weapon can also use quarterstaff techniques to block, spin, parry, strike and allow you to get close enough to hit the spearguy.

Spear vs spear is like a good fencing match. Not that crap at the Olympics, but more like saber fencing in the Prussian or German style. Slash and poke, block and poke, the classic ‘C’ cut where you block with your spear, pull a ‘C’ shaped move to get around the other spear and then thrust. Key here is keeping your body minimalized as a target and keeping your elbows at an angle so your arms aren’t creating a shot-trap for the other spear.

Caveat: In the SCA I would routinely place 2nd or 3rd in spear-vs-spear tournaments, ones that were based on number of ‘kills’ and you fought for a time limit, lose and get back in line, win and stay on the field. And I did it without having to target the opponent’s head. Usually by allowing the other guy to guide my spear into his chest by flattening his arms and making the aforementioned shot pocket.

So, to end this rather long comment, use the tip to stab and slash, use the shaft to block and clobber, use the butt-end to bash and punch. Share and enjoy. It’s very good cardio.

      1. Was waiting or LL (and others) to pull out the [previously heroic] Indiana Jones move when faced with the extra large Middle Eastern swordsman. Didn’t even break a sweat. (PS. Your massive depth of knowledge in these “older” arts is always fascinating and amazing..always learn something.)

        1. As to Gun-Fu, yes, it does work. Went to a seminar (in the SCA) on other ‘schools’ of fighting, got to meet the #2 Escrima fighter in the world. He watched us fight and thought we were crazy for taking full power blows. His response to the gun question was “Gun-Fu wins over Kung-Fu.”

He also told us about fighting his teacher. Who would call up, completely out of the blue, telling him to meet him at X location. One time was in a really nice hotel room. He and his teach start sparing, he thinks he’s doing well, then realizes Teach is fighting one-handed while changing the tv using a remote in the other hand. Or the time he got his teach in the perfect place and went to hit him only to get one stick caught in the ceiling fan. Teach, of course, laughed at him and beat him senseless, in a nice way, of course.

      2. Spears and their descendants, like the various other polearms, were still kickass weapons up until about the time of rifled muskets, well, until, really, the advent of ‘Carbines for Everyone’ as a full size rifle with a bayonet is a pretty good short spear (though an M4gery type weapon with a bayonet really isn’t, too short both gun and bayonet.)

        1. During the American Revolution, in an absence of available firelocks, General Washington armed his troops with spears. Once you’ve fixed bayonets, (Charleville or Brown Bess) you have one shot and then it’s a spear.

    1. I hate to claim to be the prophet of Puma concolor — but they come when I snarl.

  8. Yep, things cleared this morning. Everything is working good now! Re the Stout, that is what happens when you’re short crew, using ‘ecofriendly’ paint and not the good stuff that actually works! And I’m betting she won’t get a CMAV to get cleaned up either, so it’s going to fall on the crew to do all the stripping/painting in addition to trying to get their quals up to date. Grrr…

  9. No issues here, LL. The only thing I’ve noticed the last couple of days is that the links to youtube/instagram keep saying the content is not available.
    .
130*F is waaay too hot. I remember reading about a medical study where they measured human tolerance to heat. Seems like everybody in the world, from Eskimos to Bushmen, all went “OUCH!” at right around 135*F.
    .
Our little place back in Long Beach has a Zestimate of $835k. Our place here, that we bought for $375k, has a Zestimate of $720k. Real Estate is the next Ponzi that’ll come crashing down under another 4 years of Demoncrap rule. Who’s paying these prices? My bet’s on foreign money….
    .
The condition of the Stout is shameful. Don’t they have chipping/painting details any longer? Or is it the newer “Environmentally Friendly” paints and coatings they’re forced to use that don’t stick for sh1t? The four Iowa-class ships are maintained in FAR better condition, and were maintained in far superior condition during their service life.
The Iowa looked better than the Stout when she came out of mothballs….

    1. iPad access still flakes out…something about demanding that “I’m not a robot” and other gibberish. Weird. Maybe Apple AI is messing with VM.
      *
That’s the new “aged” look fancied by a number of hotrod types, some Navy Accountant decided not painting ships would save money. I like a nice Imron paint job over clear-coated rust spots.

    2. I bought my three bedroom ranch, double lot, 2 1/2 garage attached, 40 yrs ago, for $49K
Place across the street similar, listed at $248K.

      1. Thank the Real Estate agents, pushing values to make a bigger 6%, often selling the same place 2-3 times. Grifter’s (not all but at least half).

We bought a raw 35 acre parcel (minimum subdivide rule in Colorado from the 70’s) 45 miles from town in one direction and 26 miles in the other. It was specific as we wanted horse property with trees and had spent 2 years looking. Built the place from scratch, including a modest log home (we were a lot younger and motivated), Morton barn, decent sized garage, small shop, pens, loafing shed, wooden fence for a lot of it, gates, power, water lines, cleaned the place up over 22 years. In 2002 we spent about $240K WITH the property. Now…hahahahah…with our illustrious Real Estate agents (and other “exclusive property” agents like Hayden Outdoors) jacking up sale prices and valuations, and The Assessor using those sales as fodder to collect more taxes, things are overpriced by a factor of 2. A neighboring place (very nice, has a portion of the stream…but 2.5 miles off the pavement and tough to get to in the Winter unless you plow) sold for $1.5million two years ago (started at $335K, went to $746K, then magically – in one year – jumped to $1.5M). It is now on sale again for $1.65million. Our place….well…if we every decide to give it up will seriously augment the retirement, assuming anyone is willing to pay what some realtor suggests it’s worth…however, we’d take a lot less for the right buyer than top price for someone who wouldn’t appreciate the place.

  10. I wasn’t able to access your blog yesterday. I kept getting a request to verify I wasn’t a robot.
    Didn’t have any problem today.

  11. Golden Earring’s Radar Love and/or Twilight Zone. A lot of Tab Benoit’s stuff is good driving music, too.

    1. THAT’S IT!…Forgot that one. Many moons ago was heading out I80 (PA section) to a favorite backpacking trail (Black Forest Trail/Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania)…it was late on a Friday. Driving my “modified” 260Z (in “give me a ticket red”). Tooling along, light traffic, 75mph, when all of a sudden another ‘Orange’ Z blows by me with a Cadillac following. Then the song pops on the stereo…Oh boy, here we go. 135mph was fun, fastest 40 miles ever…could have sneezed and changed lanes. “Low Rider” will be in my head all day tomorrow (and might have to re-watch “Gone In Sixty Seconds”). Thx!

      1. Meant, “Low Rider” AND “Radar Love” will be in my head… brother songs from different mothers.

  12. The main reason the Roman Legions used a short wasp-waisted dual-edged sword & 3/4 body shield was to rely on the next fighter on line for YOUR defence while you were dispatching
the enemy. They combined the ‘short spear”as an open move before engaging ‘Heavy ‘armor’ tactics as opposed to individual heroic combat, from 400BC to 600AD! A little longer than our entire warfare knowledge. When the formation dissolves, the battle changes to solo duals! The British Army in 1880 South Africa relearned the problems about “Quantity is superior to Quality”with the Zulu Army.

    1. So did (Bvt) Major General George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of Greasy Grass (Later Little Bighorn) not long before Lord Chelmsford did at Islandwana.

  13. Rusty ships. I’ve always had a mental image of sailors endlessly painting things. Different strokes. Circa 1965 we had a 5 ton bridge truck where the entire drivers door from the sill down fell apart. The truck had a 1944 manufacture date and had patched bullet holes. The examination of the door revealed all the metal was rusted away and what was left was many coats of paint, inside and outside.
