3. I need my Book of “Janes” Damnit , (as would most OOD’s afloat this morning) , Ya’ll are too fast and too good . Hat Tip and Hand Salute !

   Here is a side note that runs counter to much info about need to rearm pierside . The first VLS Cruisers had a crane that came up from the VLS (unfolded like a transformer toy) . We successfully transferred , at sea, a test shape missile cannister (actual weight) ship to ship on the USS Lake Erie CG 70 using our midships strbrd sliding padeye and a gullwing strongback , it was squirrely and fucked up we all agreed . The cannister was dropped/placed on deck , and by means of electric powered dolleys , placed fore and aft on the cannister , moved the cannister through the starboard breezeway to the foc’sle where it was successfully placed into the VLS deck . This was done in moderate seas and like I said before it was a fucked up evolution , in rough seas , it would have been impossible . This was accomplished by Boatswainsmates and Gunnersmates (GMG’s and GMM’s) , and some very good Seamen . It chaps my ass every time I read that it can’t be done , by very reputable writers of Naval issues . The Navy did away with the cranes , which were very handy for the GM’s to perform PMS on the VLS . It can be done , on one of those rare “sea of glass” days , piece of cake . But it can be done…WE did it , and it sucked , we all agreed on that in the debrief . To say it was never done is a lie , to say it can’t be done is a lie , to say it shouldn’t be done is more apt .

      How do we reload VLS canisters in a theater-wide combat environment like a shooting war with China? It’s a serious question. Most of the naval engagements we’ve been in since missiles became the primary battery have been fought in very limited engagement situations. Either we’re bombarding with Tomahawks or we’re in limited air defense situations against a non-peer (the Houthis for example). Even in the Yemen scenarios, reloading is problematic.

      It underscores the need for the Ticos with their large missile batteries. Or two Burkes = one Tico (not quite, but you take my point). Even then, missile UNREP is not a good idea. Most armchair sailors don’t comprehend sea state and VERTREP (from a helicopter) only sort of works when the helo is dropping loads onto the fantail.

      The admirals like the idea of battery ships that the CGs and DDGs control. I like the idea of dropping containers filled with VLS cells onto cargo ships and using those. The Chinese do too and have experimented with them. It’s not a perfect solution but you go to war with what is at hand, not with what you’d like to have.

         They are working on it , it looks promising , honestly it does . sea conditions are the bitch , they rarely cooperate . We are the best at underway replenishment , we used to have a Russian ship back in the late 80’s called the Balzam (Balzan?) that would follow us around in the Pacific during predeployment workups and watch record and listen , Hell we even called them on the radio to announce group course changes , they’d just reply , ” Thank you US Navy warship ,” .

         1. PRC actions west of Guam in the present situation is likely to lead to a nuclear exchange, that will inevitably lead to a wider and more profligate use of nuclear weapons. And if that happens, there is almost no question but what DC and Beijing will be turned into ash piles. The Big Beautiful Golden Dome is still years from completion. That’s the promise. Can they deliver? I’m not a cancer researcher either but they’re dumping nearly a trillion dollars into the effort – putting their money where their mouths are, so I won’t gainsay them.

Stem Cell therapy is one (I call them the God cells), started developing the technology years ago in horses. Cancer is curable, and she speaks of what you suggest as causal factors and what “goes wrong”. RNA vaccines (not mRNA, totally different delivery system) are successfully being developed and used in canines…these go into the cell, replicate, but never go outside the cell. Super safe. This science is going to leap forward very quickly, if cancer gets back-burnered we’ll know it’s purely for profit in current treatment and not for a cure. One question for me, as a percentage: Why are we seeing 50% more cancer patients than the fifty’s?

   Would a large caliber handgun be better than a 12g shotgun? I’m wondering about the loads rather than if you’d be carrying it…

   1. I rarely carry a shotgun. When I do I load with rifled slugs (12 ga) usually or slap on the SST barrel and am then firing 60 caliber rounds through a rifled barrel. I fire Hornady SSTs. I have some exotic 12 ga rifled slugs that include sabots as well. Having written that, what good is it if you don’t carry it? I tend to have an AR-15 available in the rig/car but even then, it’s not at hand.

      My choice is Hornady 454 Casull 300 gr DGH (Dangerous Game Handgun) factory loads for bear country. If I know I’m walking through bear country. For city carry – 454 Casull 240gr. extreme terminal performance. But the bear loads will work well in the city – with a penetration issue after it passes through a human target. Which is why the 240gr for city loads. It will expend a lot of energy in a human target and depending on the range, is less likely to pass through and offer downrange issues.

6. Agressive bear? I’ll take the large caliber revolver, though harsh language would likely be deployed as well.

      1. Exactly. All you need for a bear gun is a 22. Shoot your companion in the foot.

         1. When confronting a bear I want a large caliber rifle, but a .44 mag pistol will do in a pinch.

            1. A lot depends on (1) The bear: Griz or black bear; and (2) the ammo involved. To be honest, my daily carry is .45 ACP which is better than nothing against a bear, but large caliber revolver rounds (.44 mag/.454 Cassul/.460 S&W, etc.) will do the job better. I have large caliber handguns available but they’re heavy and for ease of daily carry, I default to the semi-auto. If I lived in Alaska where there are a LOT of griz, I’d carry the revolver. The bears in Arizona are mostly black bears and tend to be less aggressive. A sow with cubs will always be a handful even in a black bear.

         2. Where’s LSP or BRM when you need them? They’re both parsons – they’ll go to heaven and have less to worry about. They have fewer mortal cares.

            1. Bear encounters; Fortunately my few experiences have been at a distance with blacks and barely saw what would be their tail.
               Regarding options, #1 I don’t speak bearanese. #2 Bear spray is for urban female joggers. #3 Ideally I’d prefer a chest mount handgun with a EFP capacity.
               Mean while working, I’ve relied on a 572 xp Husky but reverted back to the 390 xp a couple years ago. Plan “B” is my 4lb falling axe. Never, never have I ever even thought of using a timber falling partner for bait.

            2. I’m surprised that the Canadian Govt. doesn’t issue MAID (suicide) kits to citizens to use if confronted by a bear. If the bear ate you after you used the kit, would it kill the bear – Mike_C – consult required.

   2. The bear may take you at your word and turn around. But it’s good to have artillery to back up the harsh words.

      1. I’ll take the revolver, and hope it’s heavy enough that I don’t sprain my wrist when firing it… becuase if adrenaline makes my first shot miss, I don’t want the flinch to prevent any of the rest of the shots landing on target.

         Had a flying buddy who had a hand cannon like that, and preferred it because it was easy to keep on him, in a chest rig, in a cramped cockpit. (We’d both learned from other people’s hard experience that if a plane gets rolled in a ball or floatplane gets flipped, the only emergency supplies you have is what’s on you when you crawl out of the wreck.) His wrists were also about the size of my ankles… I hope to never have to shoot a gun like that. But in a pinch, I’ll take it gladly over no gun.

         1. DG – I have a neighbor who distributes “care for the bear” literature here every spring. The tree huggers advocate for bear spray and offer a discount coupon. Most of the people who live in Alaska go for the kinetic solution having more personal experience with big bears than the lower 48 flatlanders. I feel much the same about the bear threat as every other threat. Swift, sure and certain. You can deal with the sprained wrist from the recoil more easily than being mauled or ending up as bear scat.

            1. At my brothers Wyoming place last Fall doing some work for him, rural setting. Neighbor texts, had a mama Griz with two cubs stroll past their place half a mile up the road (end of road)…likely heading for the Wind Rivers. Let me tell you, a bear spray canister on the hip does little to quell the ‘head on a swivel’ early AM coffee walk thru the sagebrush and aspens. No matter, had a canister in the cabin and one in the shop and for a day or two left the late evening and early mornings to the wildlife. Two days later, as related a few moons back, installing the new ranch sign for him I hear a crack and look up…50 feet away is Mr Moose staring at me. The 4 wheeler was barely comforting altho faster than on foot when going past him.

Which can be taken out, potentially, by 9mm or 40SW or 45ACP or more manageable wheelgun loads like .45 LongColt or the .40ishes and the .357 magnum loads. 8. That first warship photo, the ship only looks to have one gun. I’d expect to see a CG racing stripe on the front of a US war ship with only one gun. Seriously.
   The second photo (the patrol boat) has two guns… I’m thinking that the planning that went into these war ships is WAY different than war ship planning used to be.

   1. I’m in the gun club, so I’m with you on that. At least two rapid fire 5″ rifles on DDG and CG. I’m in favor of the 5″ option on the FFG too, and some say that’s overkill. You don’t want to run out of ammo or things to shoot it from (including missiles) in a war. Sacrifice elsewhere.

      1. I’m in favor of navalized 155mm guns on cruisers, so they can fire the whole panoply of available 155mm rounds from the Army’s guided munitions all the way down to lowly HE. Autoloading can be done using a carousel loader like we’ve used before and also found in Russkie or Soviet tanks. Cruisers should have 2, but the guy I know who’s worked on the Zumwalts says guns are so passe, so maybe 1. A 155mm will put a world of hurt on any other nation’s ships, whether they be cargo or warships. And provide heckuva lot of shore suppression fire, which we sorely need today. (Imagine if we had a couple Salem class cruisers or even a couple modernized Indianapolis classes floating around today. Swing them by the Houthis and just fun-n-gun anything and everything that looks suspicious. Remove whole grid squares and put the fear of God and the US Navy back into the Barbs….)

         1. The MK 45 MOD 4 gun mount upgrade includes a longer barrel (62 caliber), improving the gun’s effectiveness as a land attack weapon (naval surface fire support). I take your point about the 155 mm rifle and have no complaints with it, but the evolution of the 5″-62 has followed similar lines and has a wide variety of munitions that can be fired from it.

            The MK 45 MOD 4 gun mount includes a 20-round automatic loader drum. The gun’s maximum firing rate is 16-20 rounds from the loader drum per minute. The Army’s 155 rifle doesn’t boast that rate of fire. The rounds in the loader drum can be fired with one crew member located at the EP-2 console below deck. Additional rounds can be loaded and fired by the full crew (Mount Captain, EP-2 Operator, and four ammunition handlers), all of which are stationed below deck. The MK 45 gun is installed aboard DDG 51 and CG 47 class ships.

    1. I there is a summit meeting with Iran this coming Saturday in person. Either they dismantle everything under direct observation or they take the hit and hope for the best. 13. I would like to have my 44 Magnum with 235 gr wadcutters while in bear country. I would prefer my 10mm with 200gr JHP because it holds 15 rounds and is quick to reload.
